Oh, man! I recently got my hands on an LB-100 pickup from G&L, and I dropped it into my Lull P4 today. Holy smokes!
I had been perfectly happy with my go-to P pickup (a Nordstrand NP4 w/ their original Alnico 5 magnet) in my Lull. But about a month ago, I decided to try Nordstrand's new Alnico 3 version of the NP4. I liked the Alnico 3 pickup at first. It seems to extend a bit higher in the treble range, and I thought the low end was similar... until I got it on a gig. It was just missing some oomph, it seemed to lack authority. I was starting to imagine that I was actually hearing the chambered nature of my Lull (Mike chambers all his Alder bodies). Their was an airiness and a softness to the tone that I definitely did not dig live. I've also got a '75 Fender P with an Alnico 5 NP4 in it that has been sounding better lately, so I was actually considering selling my Lull... until I put the LB-100 pickup into it today, that is! LOL I'm glad I did this experiment before deciding to sell, 'cause the Lull really is my favorite player. The tone had just been sucking lately.
Now I REALLY can't wait for G&L to finish building my LB-100! Between the LB-100 pickup and the Saddle-Lock bridge, I think G&L is making a really exceptional sounding P-style bass. And with the Plek processing, all G&L's play like buttah these days. I want to hurry up and get in this club already!
