Yeah pretty sure everyone will eventually get that, but it won't stop the tsunami of jokes headed their way. The G&L haters are going to have a field day with the name. Haven't heard anyone say it yet, but everyone knows what's coming...(dare I say it?)...the G&L "afterbirth" guitars. Kinda makes one wonder who's making the marketing decisions over there in Fullerton, or should I say Placentia.

My guess is that the G&L folks who live and work there have heard the name "Placentia" so often that they don't hear it the way that everyone else in the world does.

For $299, it looks like today is a good day for anyone interested to try ‘em out. Of course, you could also prob get a used tribute for a similar price.

For 3 Franklins it would be a great beginner, backup and mod platform. Would have to play it and see how the neck is and overall quality. Would be interesting to see if it is compatible with fender styled parts.

I wouldn't call it an "awful" song. Not their best, sure. My main gripe is the lead singer's overly-"quivery" vocals, like he is legit trying not to cry.

Live is one of my favorite 90's bands, but I'm kind of biased, living in their hometown.

I used to like them but over time I've come to...um...not. So that's why I said that. But just my opinion, which is far from universal. Or good, even.

Does anyone have firsthand experience playing Placentia JB? I'm curious to know how it is, but all I'm seeing is criticism from people who have no experience with this bass.

It simply appears that G&L contracted a nondescript builder to make nondescript basses so they could offer a cheaper option. I'm sure they are no better, or worse, than any other cheap mass-produced Jazz bass. Production is pretty good on cheap instruments these days.

If you're strapped for cash, and a G&L fan boy, this is the bass for you. It will play and sound, however, just like any other inexpensive J copy.

"I could see if the Placentia series was the G&L equivalent of the EBMM Sub series, where you getting the look and feel of a unique, iconic instrument at an entry level price. But these just look like generic basses/guitars that don't really add anything to their product line."

...and I stand by that. I don't see any benefit of this line for G&L; they're entering a very crowded space in the bass market and not really adding anything. A sub-Tribute line would have been a better move, in my opinion.

I just looked up the Placentia JP on MF....it's $500. The Tributes go for $550 (JB-2) to $800 (L2K). In as much as the Placentia is barely cheaper than a Tribute, it seems even more of a miscalculation.
