G&L Pricing

Wow, so it's not possible to have an M2000 any more.

I noticed that there is no default neck width option listed...do all models now come with some kind of standard neck width/radius which can't be changed without going CS?

That is correct. I'm not certain what the default neck specs are for any of the models. My assumption is that the JB and the ASAT Bass will continue to come with the 1.5" nut & 9.5" Radius, and all the other 4-strings will come with 1 5/8" Nut and 9.5" Radius. But that's just a guess for now. I'm seeking clarification from G&L on that.

The specs for the individual listings in the Build To Order section still have the Kiloton as 1½" .... but the SB-2 as 1⅝".

Since the BTO are now significantly more expensive than the Fullerton Deluxe, I wonder if the SB-2 will be added to the Fullerton Deluxe range?

Just a heads up for future orders. Light Tint Satin is now the default neck finish, so those bright white Maple necks should be a thing of the past. Vintage Tint Satin Neck finish is also a free option now, if you want the neck to be even more amber.

This makes me happy. I never understood why they charged so much to add a couple drops of tint to the finish before they spray it.

Another thing that has bugged me for years was also fixed. I never understood why they charged more for a fretless Ebony neck than a fretted neck. Now their Ebony charges just make more sense; $75 fretted, $75 fretless no lines, and $175 fretless with ghost lines. I can image that getting the ghost lines to look good probably does take a bit of extra work, so that extra charge makes sense to me as a woodworker.

Shame that Light Tint Satin is standard now. Apparently it wasn’t available anymore when I ordered my LB-100 last year, so I settled with Clear Satin. I don’t mind it toooo much, as my quartersawn maple neck isn’t too white, but I’d have preferred the Light Tint.

Anyways, that price increase is a bit mad, I doubt I’ll ever go the BTO route again. My LB-100 (which is great) would cost me $2700 if I ordered it now. That’s a lot of money, once sent to the UK (shipping charges + customs and taxes). Too much for a Pbass if you ask me. While the quality is good, it’s not outstanding enough to be worth that much.
They’re taking the Music Man route with their prices and I won’t follow. But hey it’s just me.

What I wonder about is if the radii choices are available in the CS and if the M2000 can still be ordered or if that discontinuation is effective immediately.

Are there any changes to the color options for the Fullerton Deluxe basses? I know some years they switch up the colors

I did notice the Fallout Launch Edition has been posted on their website. It hasn't been on there the last year.

Looks like some things have changed and some have stayed the same. If you want me to check on anything specific, just let me know!

Well, damn.

Looks like fret options have disappeared.

Yep, they really did a number on most of the neck options. The painted headstock options remain, and I think that may be about it.

I did take a quick peek at the Custom Shop price list, and all of those options (including nut width, radius, vintage frets and graphite nut) are alive and well in that capacity.

In March 2022, G&L did away with their long standing MSRP approach to pricing. Everything is now offered in terms of a Price which is simply the Price. You might also hear me call it “Street Price” or “Internet Price”.

Below you will find the Prices for every bass model and option included in their “Build To Order” product line. Prior to this price list, this was called the Option Order product line. And many moons ago, it was the only product line they offered. This is the product line that is made in USA with a slew of available colors and options, but it does not include the Custom Shop, CLF Research or Tribute product lines.

With MSRP out of the way, pricing a bass now involves a bit less math. You can literally just add up all the options and that will tell you the minimum price that a dealer has to advertise for that bass. I will still beat that advertised price, but I can only share those details in private conversations. So if you’d like my best price on your dream set of specs, then please:

Finishes
As of 2023 there is no longer a differentiation between Standard and Premier finishes and Metal Flake finishes are no longer available on BTO instruments.

The Clear and Burst finishes that used to be called "Premier" finishes will still look best over Ash, but the 2023 price list seems to imply that you can put them on any of the available body woods. My advice would be to avoid Basswood, it's best under a solid color. I tend to think the same thing about Alder, but maybe not?

Swamp Ash: $75
American Basswood: $0
Western Sugar Pine: $75
Okoume Body: $0

I have found interesting to compare the G&L price increase over recent years (2016 to 2023).
My JB-5 from Rocket Music: CLF079690, build sheet date 10/18/2016, I'm the 3rd owner.
On that particular example, based on data I can find and compare (e.g. MSRP vs. 'The Price', though it might be a wrong comparison, as explained above, please correct me), the price increase (10.8% over 6-7 years) is very modest, vs. what can be said on the TB G&L forum.

Much as I hate to make the situation look worse, you would actually need to adjust your math to do a true comparison. MSRP was an inflated price that nobody ever paid. Under the MSRP regime, the "Minimum Advertised Price" was 70% of MSRP. That MAP is what would be comparable to today's Street Price.

For example: instead of $2142 vs $2600, it should really be $1500 vs. $2600.

Have you gotten updated pricing for the Custom Shop?

Yes, I have! I just need to get it updated. I'll try to do that either tonight or sometime tomorrow. FWIW - all of the neck options survived there, and I don't think the CS prices jumped a ton like the BTO prices did. Pretty sure, anyway.
