G&L Pricing

Especially with the single coil option MFD humbucker. Then you could have a jazz bass option!

I would love this configuration.
What would you guys do with the three way toggle?
I'm thinking maybe just leave it as is and add a volume for the j pickup.
So it would be v/v/t, with the split coil still with the same three options.
Would that work? I'm not an electronics/mod guy at all.

Cheap G&L being cheap.

I'm actually quite pleased with the move to a gig bag. That universal case is fine when you're just transporting it around once you have the bass, but there was just enough play in there that basses could swim around enough to develop some momentum in an impact situation. Lots of cracked headstocks, paint chips around the neck pocket, rattling G-string tuners, etc. can be directly attributed to the one-size-fits-all (i.e. one-size-fits-none-perfectly) hardshell case.

I'm sure it is also a cost saving measure, but I'm really hoping there are fewer disappointed folks receiving damaged basses after this.

That's my positive spin on the situation, anyway...

I am going to +1 your positive spin. Since G&L switched from the plastic SKB style cases to G&G cases, I end up buying a new case and putting the G&G in my attic. G&Gs look great on the outside, but the protection is not there on the ones G&L uses. If you have a 5 string G&L, up until a recent batch of cases, the tuners did not fit in the case unless you detuned the guitar or got lucky on where your tuning landed.

I bought a closeout G&L Custom Creations G&G case several years ago for my L5000. It is actually fit to the bass and offers reasonably good protection. Not universal, but a much better case. Point here being G&G is not the problem. G&L opting to use a universal one is.

+1 on the gig bag as well, assuming it's of reasonable quality—certainly for shipping the bass. The current hardshells are of very limited practical use. Sometimes I think I would be happiest if, when I bought a new G&L, they'd come and *take one of their hardshell cases* out of my basement.

Hahahaha! One can dream?

I've heard from a friend in the industry that G&G's prices have climbed and what they offer on demand has shrunk considerably. Those wonderful fitted CS cases might be more expensive and harder to get these days. I'm not blaming G&G, just saying things are tough in Manufacturing these days.

yeah, I’ve heard that they are struggling to find employees and are trying to reduce the options they offer. It’s a bit of a recurring theme across companies, unfortunately.

Considering my experience, this would make a lot of sense. I ordered a build to order bass last year and when it came in, it had damage in the neck pocket. I couldn't imagine it was damaged in the factory, but I didn't know what else it could have been. I sent it back and the replacement was good (and was sent in less than a month). A one size fits all case was probably part of the reason for the damage, as well as Fed Ex.

I find it odd that G&L wouldn't add some additional padding in the case for shipping, as this seems to be a pretty common problem with the generic G&G cases....

I actually do that sometimes, put a little piece of bubble wrap between one edge of the body and the case padding. It looks like crap, I can only imagine what people think when they open the case and see that kluge. But better that they receive a mint condition bass, I figure.
