Galien Krueger vs Ampeg

GK does the active bass tone great @ ampeg does the vintage p bass or jazz bass tone . The 800 rb was all the rage in the 80s with emg or active bases . Classic guns n roses or skid row had the gk tone . To name a few . Both classic amps hard to beat a 70s svt though .

Agreed with both amps being classics but I love an SVT with EMG's too ;)

man, that's an immensely difficult decision, I've got a PF-500 head and love it to pieces, Ampeg's made a lot of good, classic gear over the years. I didn't quite dig the SVT at first, but the more I get aquainted with the PF-500's EQ, and I believe by extension the SVT's EQ (which I believe is similar), I'm finding that it's just plain simple and intuitive to use. With that being said though, I also like the EQ on GK amps - I like that it allows one to adjust both lower and higher mids at the same time. With that said though, when I was looking for a lightweight class D head, I picked the PF500 over the MB500, sure it's bigger and heavier, but I think I can lug it ;).

Ampeg is great, but I am a GK guy. I like the high mid grind of a GK 700rbII. I have tried to replace my GK with various tube amps and always end up going back to GK. My two GK 410 Neo cabs are killer with my GK amp but they didn't work well at all with my tube amp.

Owned both and like both for different reasons but over all I would say I prefer ampeg. I would say either one is going to "color" your tone just in different ways. Generally speaking GK is going to be more aggressive. I think highs that bite a bit more. Ampeg always makes me thing warmer and smother. That's just my take on the two.

I've played through both (in backline situations), and I personally was not amazed or discouraged by either. GK was an easier bass amp to dial in since I didn't even have to mess with the EQ too much, but the Ampeg's existing settings were a bit funky from the previous user for my taste. FYI GK 400RB (I think) and Ampeg 3 Pro (I think). Don't beat me up on model numbers, they were not my amps and I don't make it a habbit to memorize amp model numbers.

I'm definitely on the SS side of things in general, and love my GK. I've tried Ampeg stuff, nice amps, but not my taste.

This thread is a bit like comparing Ducati with Harley Davidson. Both awesome at what they do, but different.

The best rig I've had thus far is my current one- the 100W side of my 800RB into an Ampeg SVT210AV cab- so fat, but it can do bright and clanky, a little hairy, round, warm, you name it. I'm debating picking up two more identical cabs to run through the 300W side- it'll be a sweet 6x10!

GK cause it sounds better and its made in USA...

Why do some people feel the need to bash someone because they support USA made products? I don't hate the fact that Ampeg is made in whatever Asian country they are made. But I do feel that the fact that GK is manufactured in the US is a positive.

Ampeg. GK is antiseptic and thin sounding
My bass tone has never been accused of sounding thin.

I'd run a GK rig anyday before I'd run an ampeg rig. Just my choice. My tone. My color of choice of the two.
