I had a Carvin Pro Bass 300 15" combo amp for several years, I believe it's rated as 150watts 8ohms (the stock 15" in the combo is 8ohms), 200watts 4ohms, 300watts 2ohms. Sometimes I play with just the combo, or most of the time I will add a Dr. Bass 12" cab to it that is 250watts 8ohms.
Recently the amp head died on the combo, it's a power supply issue that's not really worth me having it repaired, I also have shows coming up, so I picked up a Gallien-Krueger Backline 600 amp head to replace the Carvin head. Technically the specs aren't that much different than the Carvin, except it's 30-50 watts more. The GK head basically has 3 volume knobs (channel A volume, boost, master volume) and a -10db switch. With all knobs at 12noon and running it through the 15" + the 12" cab, the amp seems pretty cranked and the master volume is only at 9o'clock. If I lower the boost knob, I can bump up the master volume a bit to about 12noon, but I don't think the speakers can handle any more than that.
Considering all of these specs, did I choose a good replacement head for this combo? What/how/when is an amp pushing too hard on a speaker(s)? The speakers move kinda significantly, but I don't hear anything distorting.
