Since I've had the RB1001 (a few weeks), I haven't seen or felt the fan coming on.
I did play 1 outdoor gig and it was hot; 2 sets and I still don't think it came on.
I have a gig outside tomorrow and it's going to be high 90's.
If it doesn't come on would you guys think there is a problem?
It will be loud but not stupid loud,
I have no experience with fans on these older style GK amps and don't want to hurt it.

IIRC they are variable speed fans and if you've been operating with an 8 Ohm load and not playing at super high volume with lots of bass, I suspect the fan may have been cycling and you didn't even notice. Kro's opinion if different should trump mine.

My 1001's fan is very quiet. Before I cased it, I remember blowing through the top vent to start the fan spinning just to see if it did work…

The fan blows hot air out the front of the amp, so you'll notice your back getting sweaty if you stand in front of it.

The thing that has me worried is that a borrowed amp did have the fan come on during rehearsal and I could feel it.
Mine hasn't been pushed except for 1 gig and I was a bit busy to check on a fan!

I've never heard the fan in my 1001RBii. Never noticed whether or not it has ever been on. I suggest no problem.

Only time I've ever heard my fan is when I'm recording with it and it's sitting on the table in front of me.

After an hour or so of playing, if I place my hand in front of it I can frequently feel it exhausting - sort of just like a gentle warm breeze. Not easily noticeable though.

Once again I'm not 100% sure, but I think there may have been some older models that had more of an on/off thermostatically controlled fan. The newer models I've seen have variable speed fans and are amazingly stealthy/transparent in their operation.

At least I think... It looks like your cable is plugged into a hidden new amp. Whatever the hell that is underneath it is beyond me??

Totally unintentional...Its a little bigger then the MB series and sound over the top nice.

Won't be on all the time. From my perspective the fan doesn't come on when you would expect it to. The easiest way to tell is feel for air coming out around the GK logo on front.

I've never noticed the fan coming on with my newer 700RBII. I use it at rehearsal but another bass player plays it on gigs for long amounts of time and really pushes it. No problem.

I do always keep another amp in my trunk regardless.

The fan in my MBF800 runs when it's been sitting but rarely comes on when running the amp medium hard.
Let's see how that RB does playing a rock gig on the surface of the sun today
(knowing there's a small computer bag behind the backline that's loaded with an additional 800 watts of GK whoop a$$)

75 minute set; 98 degrees; about 15 minutes in I put my hand in front expecting too feel air movement; nothing
At the end of the set the amp wasn't hot so I'm thinking no worries.
Killed with a J bass and a GB NeoX 2x12.
You know it's a good gig when both guitar players ask you to turn up during the set.

GK also had a good showing at the Stone Pony last night. My 1001RB performed at the same rock-solid level that it always does. Mostly just monitoring duty, so essentially a cakewalk, but the sound engineer was intrigued by my F115 and decided to mic up the mid-driver to accentuate some of the bite from it in the mix.

Note the MB115/MB210 (I couldn't tell which) behind and right of my rig. Band following me had that sucker mic'd up and it sounded great!

FWIW, these were the settings I ended up with on-stage. Yeah, EQ set dead-flat given my volume setting, as I'm trying out some more colored tones from my VTDI and I want that to be in the driver's seat, but I just can't bring myself to do the FX loop return thing - I'm not willing to give up the powerful GK EQ ability should I need it for any given situation.

Is that the same prototype from a few months back or have they finalized the design a bit since then? I'm really looking forward to an in-depth description of the new knob functions and particularly how the new overdrive sounds.

I had an outdoor gig this weekend with my 1001RB-II and it was about 85 degrees. The fan on mine kicks in and out quietly as needed, whether on stage or playing quietly at home. The amp gets warm but not hot. I have a little 5" desk fan I place behind my rack forcing air into it when playing outside since the rack case gets hot when the sun is angled directly on it, but it's probably not necessary (it puts me at ease, plus I can point it at me if needed!).

It also was my first gig running it through my new-to-me Ampeg 410HE and it was a killer combination, as expected, with my usual P-bass with TI flats. It's nice getting the same tone I get with my 8x10 in a smaller package.

Very nice set-up Kro, and good call IMO on the EQ! It looks like you have 5 string selected - even with a 5 string I sometimes find to much low end extension there. Do you use an external HPF or does that cab pretty much deal nicely with the extra lows?

Ha, well, first off, that cab can definitely deal with anything that my 1001RB can throw at it – those 3-way Fearless cabs with the Eminence LF woofers need to be heard to be believed as far as how much low end they can articulately put out. From what I've read, the 3015LF Greenboy models have been tested (simulated?) to do around 126dB of LF content at 790 some watts before reaching any of its thermal or mechanical limits. My amp can't get anywhere near that with a single 8ohm cab attached.

With that being said, my VTDI has a subsonic filter that is settings dependent, but that starts rolling off quickly around 30Hz with how I have it set up. Even though the GK is set flat, the VTDI is set with a slight mid-scoop, but with a good bit of harmonic content.

Anyways, none of that really matters HPF-wise when I'm playing my StingRay 5 given that its preamp rolls off pretty sharply at 60Hz. I may decide to cross-post this over on the HPF/LPF megathread at some point, but check out [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and see if you can tell which line is the 3-band Stingray in each of the first three charts without looking at the key!

I very often use an mbf800 with my fF 15/6/1, but the 1001 does very well too.
