In most cases yes you should be ok with the MB500 BUT if you get the 800 the headroom is nice.

So, a few pages ago you gentlemen helped me diagnose what ended up being a cable/loose output on my bass. Now I call on your wisdom for this: My 400RB-IV is cutting and having volume go in and out. It's also very crackly. Any idea what's up? Thinking it might be time to take it to a tech. (On that note, anyone know a good one in the STL MO area?)

Also, what are your thoughts on the GK Backline combos? I've had a Backline 600 head and really liked it, but traded for the 400RB-IV that is now crackly. My wife says even my small rig (MB200 into Neo 410) is too loud for home practice, so I'm contemplating a used Backline 110 or 112 combo. What do you think? Do they have enough bass presence and do they take OD/distortion well? Thanks again, everybody!

First thing I'd try is cleaning the send/return jacks.

Hey guys, looking to downsize my rig next year. I'm tired of lugging around my ampeg gear every weekend.

I'm looking at getting GK MB500 paired with Neo 212ii (+ another 212 later down the road if needed).

Question is mb500 + 212 loud enough for a 5 piece rock band?

I have the MB212 combo which is basically the same amp as the MB500. Weighs 40 pounds and I've yet to have it past 3 in volume. It's expandable with the matching powered cabinet but unless you guys play at deafening volumes it should be plenty.

First thing I'd try is cleaning the send/return jacks.

I bridged them with a cable, but still crackly/static-y. I just noticed that the amp crackles a lot more when I turn it off/on. Typically, I have my mute button on before I do that, so I didn't notice. Does that tell anyone something?

Also thinking I might just get a Neo 110/112 instead of a Backline Combo. I could just plug in my MB200 to the Neos. I know they're not easy to find, anyone got any leads?

I can tell you that i use a mb 112 with a mbp 112 with a 5 piece rock band and aside from the occasional outdoor show or the real large venue,that is plenty loud enough.

I was playing with the idea earlier but I needed the head separate as I live in a two floor flat. I'd have the head upstairs in my room for practice and just leave the cab downstairs.

Don't underestimate the headroom and that the MB800 is FET

I have the same combo and like you I have not had the opportunity to hear it at anywhere close to full volume, its simply too loud.
Curious as to your settings? Even though they are fairly simple on this amp, i find them to be sensitive.

First gig with the new gear! As much as I LUV my 700RB-II, I'm totally smitten with the MBF800! Smooth, warm, punchy, & LOUD as I could ever want! I went full on last Saturday night(the bar we played at is pretty big, so I can get away with the full rig), and it was glorious! I can't say that I'll NEVER look at any more amps, but I'm set for now!

And my board:

The NS Design basses kick @$$ too! I was a bit worried they wouldn't have enough "booty" for rock, but runnin' 'em through the MBF800 was nothing but MASSIVE TONE!

I am pleased....

On a side note, I thought the FX loop on my 700 had crapped out, turns out it was a bad cable on my board! My 700 is fine!

I have the same combo and like you I have not had the opportunity to hear it at anywhere close to full volume, its simply too loud.
Curious as to your settings? Even though they are fairly simple on this amp, i find them to be sensitive.

I basically have the gain and boost around 12-1 o'clock, treble and bass flat and the low and high mids around 1. Volume is at maybe 3 and is plenty loud. I have Stingray basses so I boost the mids a bit. Get lots of compliments on my tone too. I was amp-less for a few years just direct into the board with IEM's so I'm still tweaking things.

I had briefly had the new Fender Rumble 500 and it sounded good in the store but just wasn't thrilled in a band context. Got lucky and scored the GK used. Much happier with the tone and a ton of headroom if I need it. Just amazed at how much tone cones out of a 40 pound combo.

Bridging isn't the same as cleaning.
Get some CAIG DeOxit, spray it on a q-tip or cable end, and clean the jack. If using a cable end, wipe and repeat til it's clean.
My 4(?) year old MBF500 was making a noise at rehearsal the other day that I thought was a bad output jack on my 1972 Tele bass, but then after ruling things out and cleaning jacks, it was back to fine.

Loved the MBF but decided I wanted to use something in front of the amp to get the tube sounds so when I wanted a SS i.e., regular GK sound at loud volumes I could get it. I found no matter what I did with the MBF I could not crank it up and make it should like a non MBF. An MBF which had a non-tube channel would be great
