Gamers, what are you playing these days?

Damnit. Looks like I'm buying a 3DS.

YES!!!
If you are a fan of OoT, playing on the 3DS is the way to go! But I highly recommend the 3DS XL, as it is a better handheld in many ways. The big screens are really nice, and the ergonomics of the XL are far superior. I had the original 3ds when it came out, and after an hour my hand would hurt really bad, and be super stiff, which led me to purchasing a hand grip that clipped onto the unit. But when the XL version came out, one thing I noticed right off the bat was how much more comfortable the unit was to hold in my hand. So I upraded to the XL;)

No regrets either :)

BTW, Kid Icarus: Uprising for 3DS is an AMAZING game, if you can get used to the controls :)
Might as well give that one a try if you are getting OoT 3D (knowwhatimean?)

I'm amazed people are so in love with N 64 around here. I tried plugging in a bunch of games a while back, but I faced this: a little tv with the little 64 bit graphics was PLENTY more attractive than being boomed up onto the big screen..... Oot is Oot......but with the exception of that, perfect dark 64, and Mario 64......I wish graphically Nintendo stuck with SNES graphics and waited it out till games actually looked hot in 3d

Well to be fair, N64 graphics did look pretty awesome for their time. My first time plugging in OoT when I was a kid was well, almost magical.

I think that's the copy of ocarina of time that was packaged with one of the GameCube games. I think it came with windwaker.

Yeah, I think it was some sort of Pfeiffer thing for WW, but has since been rereleased on a couple times on different platforms. The way I played was via a working ROM for my n64 emulator. As far as my knowledge, it was originally supposed to be like an expansion for the n64 disk drive, but when that was scrapped for north american release, the game was too. Its pretty much like a remix of the original with much harder dungeons, much like the second playthroughs on the older games.

Yep, I believe you are correct. Definitely jogged my memory.

So now the question is... 3DS XL + OoT or a new bass... Stupid GAS.

The scaling issue sucks for most non-HD signals on a big HD TV sadly, the N64 seems a bit worse because they cut a few corners to try and get the best graphics they could from the device.

Waited til games looked hot in 3D? So we should have waited another 10 years before the 3D shift? Nah!

A lot of how they look on the big screen depends on how your TV upscales. Mine certainly sucks at it (also have this issue right now playing through FFVII :( )

No love for Goldeneye 64 !?!?! :D

Totally should've waited another decade. Dude you can't tell me having every polygon visible doesn't detract from the experience.

Of all the games, I'd push star fox 64, smash bros, and perfect dark. Goldeneye was good. But perfect dark became great because it knew when enough was enough in terms of repetition etc.

But let's take a deeper look. Smash bros? Glorified two-d gameplay with a 3d tinge. Starfox. More 2d. Perfect dark.....well no. That was good.

But I love how old super nes games transfer to big screen with ease. Donkey long country looks even better. Mario looks better. Bust a move looks better. There's gameplay, but clarity. And not someone asking "is that a tree or a turd?"

Goldeneye = SX
Perfect Dark = Fodera

Only one of my friends had the expansion pack, the rest of us spent plenty time on Goldeneye, brilliant game at the time. Replaying, Goldeneye just seems more enjoyable, that could be a lot of the nostalga kicking in, Perfect Dark is ok, but certainly doesn't have the edge IMO.

I'm gonna disagree with that, I though that the early 3D was pretty sweet at the time and it kept pushing the gaming industry forward. Even the 3D on rails games were good, and on that note Lylat Wars (Starfox64) was full 3D in some game regions as well as in the multiplayer. Can't exactly expect to sit and stagnate on old tech until the new stuff magically appears!

I didn't find that seeing every polygon detracted from it, a good game was a good game. If anything we've started seeing graphics becoming too central.

The scaling issue does exist, but that's more to do with the N64 not being designed for TV's, that generation of consoles made use of the workings of CRT TVs for a number of the lighting effects so they never seem quite right with a flat screen.

+10000 on graphics being too central. Too many new games these days just feel like one glorified cut scene that happens to let you push buttons to do things sometimes.
