Gamers, what are you playing these days?

Only one of my friends had the expansion pack, the rest of us spent plenty time on Goldeneye, brilliant game at the time. Replaying, Goldeneye just seems more enjoyable, that could be a lot of the nostalga kicking in, Perfect Dark is ok, but certainly doesn't have the edge IMO.

I'm gonna disagree with that, I though that the early 3D was pretty sweet at the time and it kept pushing the gaming industry forward. Even the 3D on rails games were good, and on that note Lylat Wars (Starfox64) was full 3D in some game regions as well as in the multiplayer. Can't exactly expect to sit and stagnate on old tech until the new stuff magically appears!

I didn't find that seeing every polygon detracted from it, a good game was a good game. If anything we've started seeing graphics becoming too central.

The scaling issue does exist, but that's more to do with the N64 not being designed for TV's, that generation of consoles made use of the workings of CRT TVs for a number of the lighting effects so they never seem quite right with a flat screen.

Never seen quite right is an understatement; they just don't cut it!

Maybe I'm a bit spoiled on the new graphics but if I chose between bioshock and perfect dark? It's Rapture all the way for me, baby.

I don't hate the graphics that much so long as they just don't translate to the eye that well. Most of the "3-d" magic that was listed just looks to
Me like a smudged painting; sure the game plays well but what good is it if you can't see things through clear.

Play through it again on the hardest difficulty, then we'll talk...
:D

Meh. Im of the belief that a game should not be simple to beat on 'normal' (not impossible, but not easy) and that there shold be no other option other than normal. If you have to set a game to a harder difficulty to make it challenging then the game is too easy to begin with.

So let me understand this real quick, your complaint with the N64 is that it doesn't look as good as games made 15+ years later? You do realize that there's a possibility that games like BioShock wouldn't exist if it weren't for the massive success of games like GoldenEye, right? I see it as a case of these modern games standing on the shoulders of giants, as they say.

Interesting thought. That's how games used to be. TBH, I usually find even the most difficult settings of most games to not be that much of a challenge these days. It's a shame too because most modern story modes/campaigns are stupid short.

I get what you're saying, but in some games like metal gear solid, having the ability to play through the same game with a much harder set of rules can be a great challenge and completely change the way you play the game entirely. Not mandatory but lots of good old' rage inducing fun.

I totally agree. That games have an "easy mode" these days is kind of ridiculous.

Why not make the harder set of rules the norm?

Again using MGS as an example, the European extreme difficulty mode in some of the games are made for extremely advanced players, and if that was the normal mode, it would turn off so many new players to the franchise they'd never be able to sell a game. Extra options are hardly ever a bad thing.

Sure, making games too difficult could turn people off, and that should be avoided.
My issue is that most games these days are too easy, even when on normal mode.

Oh, well in that case I completely agree. In modern gaming, all to often I feel like the game is holding my hand and leading me through a bunch of little shooting galleries. Pretty shooting galleries, but shooting galleries none the less.

If games are too easy on normal, why don't you just play on a higher difficulty level?

There's probably some guy out there that's not very good at games who thinks normal difficulty is too difficult on many games.

Extra options are hardly ever a bad thing.

The thing is most games are easy by design these days, limited amount of possibilities, very linear, easy puzzles. Even if you crank the bad guy's accuracy and health, the games are still easy in all the aforementioned aspects.

Psshhh. Only because people have gotten used to easy games. The industry has spoiled them. Castlevania? Megaman? Those games were rage inducingly hard (we'll called it "smashed controller syndrome") and those were my favorite games as a kid.

try sniping the C4 to cross the strut in metal gear solid 2 on extreme difficulty.

I love playing on easy, I don't have much time to devote to games anymore and it lets me get a better chunk of the game in every time I sit down to play

If the game is good I'll ratchet the difficulty up and give it another go. examples: God of War series, Metal gear solid series, Darksiders series (although i think the normal mode in darksiders 1 had the difficulty perfect), Mass effect series.

Yeah, I got through Uncharted 1-2-3 on normal setting and I had a bunch of fun. I'm not a professional gamer so I do not want to devote dozens of hours in order to become good enough to ''play'' a game; I want the gaming experience to help me to learn new strategies and become more accurate and whatever but there is no way I would even have considered finishing the first tome if the default difficulty was set to ''difficult''. I appreciate the harder challenge once I already finished the game but that's about it. Multiplayer doesn't even remotely interest me.

I remember too many nes, snes and master system that were so hard I felt like I had to play like a computer in order to beat them. Life is too short to rage-throw your controller and swear against pixels.

If I want to practice, practice and practice, I'll just pick my bass. I cannot see the fun in ''investing'' (read: wasting) so much time in a video game anymore.
