GASing for a P-Bass

I have a 50s Classic in honey blonde on the way right now. It compared favorably to the MIA standard in a few too many reviews not to take serious note, and more than a couple said they even preferred it. Idunno if that was honeymoon glow, but there's a healthy group out there who consider them on par and able to deliver the sound MIA-style.

I'll report back if you're able to hold out that long. lol

Why would you second guess getting a MIA P bass? It is hard to go wrong with a used P bass unless you have no clue about what you are buying. And $700-900 is a great range to buy used with a HSC. Get it over with and cry once.

I would love to have a red one. Not a fan of the sunburst ones.

Budget is $500(ish)

Which I can grab a MIM (used) for that, but not quiet an American.

Very distracting.
I got this on eBay for $600. with a hard case! The USA Nitro Satin Precision.

Yeah.
I check the classified (here on TB) more than I should....
I also understand that $700-$900 is a GREAT range for a used one. But it is still out of my range. LOL!
All the guys that have P-Basses posted on TB for sale/trade have probably all heard from me in the past few days. I have offered my Jazz Plus V up to everyone of them...but no takers as of yet.

I plan to just acquire a bit more cash and then probably start "seriously" shopping for one.

I really feel like I will be good when I have it. I got my Music Man about 2 1/2 years ago and haven't looked or shown any interest in another bass until the beginning of the week.

I love my Ernie Ball, and will never get rid of it. But I am starting to gig a lot more in "cover" band situations and I think the P-bass is going to get me closer to the tones the other guys are using.

I have the Jazz, but I am really not very happy with the P'ups and electronics. I considered gutting it and doing as I wanted with it, but there has got to be someone out there that wants it. From what I have read on here about them they are a bit rare and the people that like them, LOVE them. I'm just not one of them. :-{

I am also not sure if I should just go with a Standard P-bass (what I mean by that is one with JUST the PRECISION pickup in it)
or one of the deluxe or specials (as in with the Precision p'up and a jazz/humbucker)

So, probably good I don't have the money as of yet, because I may not be exactly sure what I want...

I do want a forever instrument. I rather not get anything I have to upgrade or work on or have second thoughts about. I've been down that road with basses and ended up not happy.

Also, I like G&L and have nothing against them or the Lakland basses.
I just want a Fender.

People want what they want. If you want a Ric, Fender, Alembic or a SX. I wanted an American Fender Jazz. Played 4 to find "the one". I recommend you find P-Basses in your price range that you can try out first. Get the one that feels best. My problem is I found a P-Bass I really like. usually the necks put me off them but I saw one in the local GC that had a honey burst finish. Had to try it. The neck worked for me. $800 for a American P seems reasonable to me. Just need to find $800.
You can find those for 699 if you keep your eyes open..

Keep adding more money to your budget until such a time comes that your monetary situation becomes more favorable in regards to the acquisition of the musical instrument in question,.........or, in regards to your current situation as far as the purchase of the lower end model based upon the one mentioned previously, your final decision to move forward at this time with the acquisition of said lower end model will result in less time going by before ownership can be achieved, such decisions and thier benefits are subjective, and must be decided by the individual as far as the benefits of such actions.

Pics?
And still outta my range...unless you wanna trade me for the Jazz Plus V? ;)
Dude the honey p is the best p you can get other than the classic 50s or am std, I have both ( honey p and am std) and it's a toss up between the two, I also have a 1992 mij 70s reissue that I love as well, my next p will be the classic, 50s but for your purpose get the honey p, check out the honey p thread here on TB

Although in his initial post OP does not say so specifically, the context suggests he want a *Fender* Precision-type bass (P, PJ, whatever). So copies, builds, later Leos, Laklands, Lakins,
and boutiques need not apply. Within these limits, I suggest OP test-play thoroughly every *Fender* P-bass he has the opportunity to try. No Fender on the headstock, no try-out. Once he
finds THE bass, then he can worry about price -- and country of origin -- if he feels he needs to. Since we are talking about ONE bass and not a representative sample, I do not see country of origin as being a deal-maker or deal-breaker, and I doubt recording engineers or bandmates would either.
