GASing for a P-Bass

Since I read angelcrushers thread on P basses, I find myself wanting one pretty bad.

My dilema(s) is/are

Do I need one?
I am convinced I do. Lol!

Also, I feel I am a high enough caliber of a player that I need an American one.
I'm feeling kind of snotty and spoiled by thinking this.

My funds are quiet enough for an American made one, but they are enough for a MIM.

The urge to just buy the MIM and be done is pretty strong, but I want a one time purchase. A Pbass that will grow old with me. Ya know?

Get an old Peavey Fury. Mine is an 88, is American made, sounds great and plays every bit as good any other MIA Fender or G&L that I have owned. I paid $120 at a pawn shop for it. Some might argue that I over paid at that. Those old MIA Peaveys are something special man.

What's the deal with the Guitar Center American Special P Basses that were around last year and prior. I know there is a whole thread dedicated to that but considering the above, how does it compare to a MIM or a Highway One.

Is it only MIA'ish or is it really MIA.

Like the OP I had P bass Gas starting in 2009 when my girlfriend bought me "back", the first bass she bought me a 1989 Squier precision (which I still own). Fast forward to 2014 and I am gassing badly for either a MIM or MIJ precision, I'm not a gear snob but I do like to see Fender on the headstock on a P bass.
Anyhow this January I managed to get a new American Standard Precision, & for me owning an American made Fender Precision doesn't get any better .
To the OP buy what you can afford there are plenty of good secondhand precision's out there it's how long it takes you to find the one you like.

If your at all like me (and you buy an MIM) you will still want an MIA. I have a Select P that is awesome. I previously had an AMSTD which was wonderful. You can definitely find a used 2012 or later on EBay for less than a grand. Save up as it will be that much sweeter when you get.

P.S. nothing wrong with MIM's at all, but sounds like you really want an MIA.

I gotta agree with some on here who have mentioned the Squier Classic Vibe series. I've never played one of those that didn't impress me. I can't say that about either MIM or MIA Fenders because I've played examples of both that did nothing for me or that had issues.

Granted, I haven't played as many Squier CVs though...

I would suggest a G&l SB-1!

They are all American made.

Roll off the volume to 80%, and you get an excellent Precision bass tone.

Turn it wide open, and get the next step in the evolution of the Precision bass.

Just as Leo intended!!!!

I bet you're a car salesman. Lol!

Salesman: "Hey man, how are you? What's your budget today?"
Me: "Um...I'm sitting on about $500..."
Salesman: "Ah, yeah man, we can work with that. Got the perfect bass for you right here."
Me: "Oh nice. I like it. How much is it?"
Salesman: "It will run you $640 + tax"
Me: SMH....Ugh...

I can't get it bro. To much. I really appreciate you looking it up though. :)

I'm actually the one that looked it up, I was trying to show what was available in American Fender Precisions by giving a quick example off of the GC site.

A bassist that I work with regularly bought his American Special (a clean black with white guard and maple neck model) off of our local CL for $500. I got my Honeyburst American Special for $600 used. Recently another Honeyburst American P was on CL for $550. You mentioned that you like red, so I picked this one as an example of what I was talking about when I said that they can be found for $500 to $650. Patience is the key when looking for an American Precision for a good price.

I would wait and save my money until I found an American Precision in my price range, rather than buy a MIM P-bass. Your mileage may vary as they say...

Your second post said that your budget was "$500(ish)", and yes, thirty years or so ago I did sell cars for a short time... :D

Last year I was in GS just playing a few basses for kicks. I happened upon a 98 MIA with a killer feeling neck. I kept playing it for an hour. I finally said, "I can't leave without buying THIS bass". I came to the store just to waist a little time. The 98 MIA P-Bass has the sweetest action of any bass I've ever played. I put $200 down on it right there for them to hold it. And had to wait a month to pay the $650 balance. Best $850 I ever spent.

Nothing's wrong with MIM P. Unless you have money for a MIA.
This one's neck is a MIM J neck and body is a MIM P.
I didn't find a MIM that I would like, so this is a result. Will probably paint the headstock and get black tuners and strings at some point in the future.
