GASing for a P-Bass

Yeah.
I check the classified (here on TB) more than I should....
I also understand that $700-$900 is a GREAT range for a used one. But it is still out of my range. LOL!
All the guys that have P-Basses posted on TB for sale/trade have probably all heard from me in the past few days. I have offered my Jazz Plus V up to everyone of them...but no takers as of yet.

I plan to just acquire a bit more cash and then probably start "seriously" shopping for one.

I really feel like I will be good when I have it. I got my Music Man about 2 1/2 years ago and haven't looked or shown any interest in another bass until the beginning of the week.

I love my Ernie Ball, and will never get rid of it. But I am starting to gig a lot more in "cover" band situations and I think the P-bass is going to get me closer to the tones the other guys are using.

I have the Jazz, but I am really not very happy with the P'ups and electronics. I considered gutting it and doing as I wanted with it, but there has got to be someone out there that wants it. From what I have read on here about them they are a bit rare and the people that like them, LOVE them. I'm just not one of them. :-{

I am also not sure if I should just go with a Standard P-bass (what I mean by that is one with JUST the PRECISION pickup in it)
or one of the deluxe or specials (as in with the Precision p'up and a jazz/humbucker)

So, probably good I don't have the money as of yet, because I may not be exactly sure what I want...

I do want a forever instrument. I rather not get anything I have to upgrade or work on or have second thoughts about. I've been down that road with basses and ended up not happy.

Also, I like G&L and have nothing against them or the Lakland basses.
I just want a Fender.

Man you are so confused.... go for the best of both worlds. Not an expensive MIA - not a a MIM - but an MIJ...

You get the full functionality of a P bass -- and the added tones of a J bass - just dial them in....

It's so close to your price range.... are you saying that for a few $$$ more you can't be the player you dream of being?

Yes, they are.
Forgive my ignorance.
1. I am new to this forum and don't have any clue as to who the players are yet.
2. E-communication is sometimes hard to read when it comes to tone, esp in terms of humor/sarcasm.

So, if you were just having fun with the posting of the Victories, then I'll delete this post and get out of the way. Otherwise, I am curious as to how people on this forum define a "P-bass" (just loosely - not looking for a Webster's defn.): is it just a 34" scale single mid position pickup bass? Thnx.

A previous poster had stated that he *thought* they were Victories, and I was agreeing that they were.

A P Bass is built by Fender (trademark and all), mid-position split- or single-coil, 34" scale.

Im not saying this to be rude, but why does it have to be a Fender?
There is alot of great p basses out there without the fender name on it.

I always gas for a p bass..but then I it's too much money to pay for a simple passive bass with only one pickup. I 'get' the simplicity thing and o love the p bass sound, but for those kinda bucks I want a bass that can be a bit more versatile. For the price of a MIA p bass the market is huge.

Ok. Cool. I had always used Precision to refer specifically to Fender and P-bass to be a Precision style. I had (mistakenly) used "P-bass" to refer to Fender and Squire Precisions/P-basses, as well as Leo's G &L's P-basses and the similar designs by Carvin and many others, without, necessarily, the unmistakable Fender headstock. I would never consider the Gibson Victories or many other single pup basses that don't utilize a p-style pup in a p-style position with a p-stlye body to be P-basses. Thanks. Just getting my sea legs on this forum. I appreciate you clearing up the verbal for me on this forum. FWIW, I did pick up another Fender Am Std P-bass (term properly used :) today to fill a very minor gap in my set once I change the strings and get it set up a certain way.

Well, I've played a few pretty cruddy MIMs but also some very nice ones. Certainly not firewood grade.

Why "so anti MIM?" Is it just the country of origin or did somebody hurt you?
Just lots of little bad experiences. Whenever I pick one up at the store they disappoint me. The frets hurts my hands, the finishes are usually plain, ugly colours, the headstock logo looks dumb. They typically sound ok. I just don't like how they say fender on them.

Squier are great. They are not claiming to be fenders and hit the mark for price. The MIMs seem to be typically worse than squier with lack luster hardware and weak pups. This is a generalization aimed at the standards mostly.

CIJ fenders are really good quality. Great hardware, flawless finishes. They claim to be fenders and can rival American standards.

My response was a little rash but I just really hate MIM standard basses.

Since I read angelcrushers thread on P basses, I find myself wanting one pretty bad.

My dilema(s) is/are

Do I need one?
I am convinced I do. Lol!

Also, I feel I am a high enough caliber of a player that I need an American one.
I'm feeling kind of snotty and spoiled by thinking this.

My funds are quiet enough for an American made one, but they are enough for a MIM.

The urge to just buy the MIM and be done is pretty strong, but I want a one time purchase. A Pbass that will grow old with me. Ya know?

I was in the same situation.

So I bought this.
MIM
Would I trade it for a Squier?
I wouldn't trade it for any Squier made.
Are there good Squiers out there?
Sure, but you're not looking for a Squier, are you?

I paid $399 for this three weeks ago.
Is it worth the money?
It's worth more.

I won't be needing another.

Sincerely, thanks for the response, not that you owed me an explanation. At least you have your reasons and you state them well.
