Geddy's bass tone

At the Chicago show on 6/9 and at Tinley last year I was super impressed by the sound of that Jaco bass- it seemed to have a lot more presence (to me at least) than his other basses and sat great in the mix. Loud, aggresive and clear but not to the point of burying the guitar and drums at all- I wonder if the sound guy is cranking Geddy on Mal Nar or if it's just that bass? It's sure got me gassing for a fretless now........

I agree on this one, same over at Concord, CA, this year; the Jaco bass sounded absolutely the best. --Kent

I'm new to this forum (but no spring chicken!). This thread has given me the best entertainment I've had in ages. Thanks to all you guys who contributed.

Geddy's sound on Rio is my holy grail. I use a Jazz 24 and it gets fairly close without too much effort, but I use a cheapie Behringer V-Amp PRO (not the bass version) and with the Tweed Combo model dialled in and playing through an Ashdown combo with no EQ for me it's just perfect.

I actually have a question about Rotosound strings to Russ. The constant point when talking about Rotosound strings on this forum is that they eat up frets like crazy. Russ, have you noticed such wear and tear with Geddy's basses, or switching to new strings for each set is avoiding this? --Kent

I have the rotosound 66's on my Geddy clone and I haven't noticed any abnormal wear after a few months, but then I don't play as hard (or good) as Geddy and the bass sits there a lot lately....the tone is great but I don't like the feel.

Russ would be the man to let you know about the wear issue with Geddy's basses, though I think the question may have been addressed earlier in this thread....(btw, Russ is somewhere between Red Rocks and Milwaukee right now, might be a day or two before an answer from him)...

Rush's Milwaukee show is tomorrow night, I'm stoked! Thunder, lightning and a 200 mile drive won't stop me!

mystery screws (?) circled in red on geddy's original jazz.

I just realized that those were the screws that used to hold the thumbrest. Though you would like to know incase you have not figured it out yet.

Hi Russ, I was at the show on 6/28 in St.Louis...great show as always and the guys are wonderful to see live. I noticed during "A passage to Bangkok" after geddy made his switch to the Rickenbacker he paused after the first verse fliped the bass up and switched the jack from the stereo output to the standard output... I at first thought "whoops Russ plugged in the wrong jack...Geddy is gonna tear him a new one" but then after I thought about it for awhile I decided it could have been a technical problem and Geddy made the switch to fix the issue. So I guess my question is which was it...unintentional wrong output jack or tech issue? If it was unintentional error I hope Geddy took it easy on ya. :bassist:

I think they sounded fantastic in Philly and we took my 2 nephews who are 15&17 and they both stood there, wide eyes saying, "I didnt expect it to sound SO GOOD!" They have only seen them play live on youtube so they were totally blown away.

One of the guys Iwent with has never seen them live before. He was also blown away by them and he also heard a whole bunch of songs he never heard before!

My other friend was upset Geddy didn't use his Rick for more than one song!

To that end, I absolutely think Geddy's tone with the Jazz is really the best. But there was something that just sounded right about the bass when he hauled out the Rick...though the Jazz sat in the mix with much more presence and better low end...

Hey Russ, thanks for all the awesome information you've posted. I read that you put a new, sanded neck on Geddy's bass and he loved it. I was wondering if you could give any more info about the sanding work that was done. Is all of the finish taken off (down to bare wood) or is it just lightly sanded? After sanding was the finished smoothed with steel wool, or was it just paper? I I know you said the neck was sanded by Fender, so I realize you might not have exact details. Anything you know would be interesting to read though. Thanks again!

Hi All,

I wasn't there at the St. Louis show as I had to go to the hospital for serious health reasons. I had to pull myself off the tour and go home to Canada to get medical attention. I won't be posting for awhile. Thank you all for your kind words.

RR
