Thanks for posting about this Echo. Nice to know the story behind that bass.

Guys, Geddy's tech wanted a bass that would physically look like his black 72. It was a gift, not meant to be an illusion of a real vintage road scarred bass.
I think it is a real cool thing that his tech likes working with Geddy so much to do this for him. I don't see it in any way as being fake, it was a piece of art for a great player.

I'm no big fan of this worn-out thing but it looks perfect on it.

Seriously though it sounded great. He used it on The Garden, and absolutely wonderful song of the new album. I wish we knew the story behind the color though.. It just doesn't seem like him.

You can see him unplug it at 1:08. It looked like he had some earphones on. His knee blocks the view of his resting right hand so we don't know for sure if he's on the volume knob or just resting below the strings.

Look at the shape of his hand when it goes down. He's on a knob. The earphones are never in his ears. Who knows what happened between the time he unplugs the bass and the time he was playing it unplugged.

I wouldn't call that incontrovertible evidence without seeing exactly where his hand is resting.

You're right that the headphones are out. I wonder why he was plugged in and what he was plugged into.

Hi guys,
The bass you are talking about is a Surf Green Fender Masterbuilt Jazz Bass with a matching peghead.
It was built for Geddy as a surprise from his tech for the upcoming tour. I am the builder that made the bass so I know this as fact.
Sweet bass, and so happy to see he is playing it on tour!

For “The Pass” (from 1989’s Presto), Lee plays a D-tuned black Jazz bass assembled from parts—including a Mike Bump-built Custom Shop neck and pickups by Tom Brantley. McIntosh says Lee also recently received a new Custom Shop surf green Jazz bass built by Jason Smith that will be used on four songs.

Dude, he uses a practice amp in the room. I know he likes amps as low as possible (other than on-stage of course). Read that in interviews for years. That doesn't sound like (just) the acoustics of the room, that sounds like a practice amp played on low volume.

Hey Sean,
The body wood is Alder.
There is no color underneath the Surf Green other than the white primer coat used with that paint color. What you might be mistaking as a gold color, is just the polyester undercoat that is high gloss under the lacquer color coat. This was done to be painted the same as his 70s Jazz basses.

Yep, according to the TB self assertion team & it's affiliates, fake wear & tear, & fake Fender decals are fraud, & therefor automatically make the owner a fake, a fraud, & a POSER.

He must be horribly self conscious, and insecure about himself, he's certainly not a "REAL" musician. lol

What kind of musician fakes wear & tear? Real musicians "earn" their basses battle scars.
This guy hasn't earned those. He's definitely a poser.
he'll NEVER make it as a real musician.
