Gene Simmons is Good

the only thing I can agree with you is " no Michael Anthony, no Van Halen" WELL PUT!!!

I'm not sure you understand. You don't need to agree. Whatever semantic argument you've devised to make you feel superior to those who can't read written scores is of no consequence. People that make music are musicians, whether or not you agree. It's like people who think the Earth is flat; that may be what they've decided, but that doesn't make it so.

I think the statement "Gene Simmons is Good" is obviously very subjective. Personally I think he is quite average. But no one in Kiss ever claimed to be a great musician to my knowledge. I was a huge Kiss fan back in the late 70's and early 80's. They were my first concert. It wasn't about the chops of the guys in the band. It was about the show they put on. They fact that they have been around for well over 30 years through various line ups should say something about them as entertainers.

LETS GET BACK ON TOPIC, GENE DOES PLAY HIS BASS, GENE CAN PLAY HIS BASS, GENE DOES WRITE AND SING SOME GOOD SONGS, AND KISS IS A COOL BAND!

Hey look,I'm back............ according to your definition he doesn't write anything. He "jams it "

So,you come in here, throw the thread wildly off-topic,and then try to be the guy that puts it back on topic?

Good for you!

P.S. KISS sucks big green donkeys.

Your comment isn't negative at all. Reading music is a on going challenge, don't be afraid to keep challenging yourself.

I don't listen to many newer bands these days so I wasn't aware of some of these progressive metal bands, that's just a function of my age. (you know, they just don't play like they used to anymore!) Maybe you should tell me some bands like these I should checkout?

Alright taking thread further off tangent before returning to the topic, here's a few...

Spock's Beard(The first two albums are great starting places).
The Flower Kings(Unfold the Future, Flower Power)
Ayreon(Check out the Human Equation, after that if you enjoy him look into his various side projects).
Porcupine Tree(Fear of a Blank Planet)

Those are some of the more obvious bands, and all of these bands started in the 90s(PT starting in the very late 80s), but it does give a small taste of the groups out there today.

Back to the thread topic, I would say Gene was good for KISS. When he actually wanted to play bass he made some rather nice lines to compliment the group's simple music. Somewhat decent bassist overall, like I've said in posts before, I believe they are better players from the era.(Joe Bouchard, Roger Glove, and Dennis Dunaway are some players I believe to be better at playing and composing bass lines).

foursringburn - thank you for understanding about UK spelling. I'm sorry if you found the way I spell "capitalise" surprizing in any way. ;)

As regards your other assertions in this thread, I must politely point out that what you are posting doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The phrase "writing music" could be taken to mean composition or arranging of music, or, far more trivially, the act of putting dots on a stave on a piece of paper (or computer screen). To suggest that someone who can do the first but not the second is not a musician just demonstrates misunderstanding on your own behalf. Are you so confident in your own superiority that you think you can assert that someone like Buddy Rich wasn't really a musician and still expect to be taken seriously? Or - if we're talking about "writing" music in the non-trivial sense - Irving Berlin? I would hope that as a musician yourself, you'll understand this point.

I also think you're mistaken in assuming that anybody who's disagreed with you up to this point must be a non-reader. I learned to read music over 40 years ago and much of my work as a musician depends on it. I know that reading is an invaluable skill and it enables a musician to do things that non-readers are unable to do. But to say that being unable to read prevents you from being a musician at all, or that "writing" only counts if it's in standard notation, is just plain wrong. Such an assertion demonstrates either a lack of musical understanding or ill-informed prejudice.

+1 These are tools musicians use. Of all the qualities that a musician may posses, sheet reading would not be at the top of my list as a potential qualifier for musician (if I had to select one).

Some better, more admirable candidates might be creative perseverance, enthusiasm, or good work ethic. Anybody remember these?

Yeah, I know. Check the earlier post, #202. ;)
Sorry, I was confused. For some reason I thought that you had put the apostrophe in there as a correction. Yeah, I'm as bad a speller as anyone, and my grammer ain't too good either.

To get back on topic, put me in the camp that enjoys Gene's role in KISS. I was 16 years old back in '76 when I first saw KISS in concert, and had a great time.

well said...

On a side note: I've been playing music;
Drums, Piano, Keys, Guitar, Bass, Ukelele, Engineering, Producing, writing & arranging songs, etc. blah blah... everything music
for 28 years as a "Pro" (making a pretty good living at it)
Yet I don't read...does that mean I'm not a musician? :(

doesn't change the fact that Gene Simmons SUCKS! as a "musician" and a "person" IMO & IME...
