Gene Simmons is Good

larrison said:
Check out the old MTV uplugged dvd. That particular video proves that Kiss and Gene Simmons were/are good adequate musicians...

Love this one,

and think I'm going blind from the Unplugged DVD. To me that was one of their finest performances and Genes bass sounded fantastic in the mix. Kiss is just good rock and roll, with a side of cheese though...but that's what makes them Kiss!

Just curious why people want to give Gene Simmons a bad rap...He is a very good ROCK bass player.

And so are Nikki Sixx, Pete Wentz, and Mike Dirnt.

Of course it depends on your definition of the words "very," "good," "rock," "bass," "player," etc.

It took me awhile to realize how much fun and what an amusing pasttime picking on them seems to be here on TB. It gets as much or more mileage than the SX threads.

THAT is the biggest downfall of this forum.if you ask me,it seems almost like the people here scorn rock bass players.
anyone that doesn't have super funky slap basslines,or some upbeat complex jazz bassline automatically "sucks" at bass.

MOST rock bassists don't get any appreciation around here from what i've seen(besides geddy lee).but i have to say,i'm probably the one and only person here that thinks the complete opposite.i could give two s**** about flea's bass playing,or marcus miller's bass playing....or even jaco's....:eyebrow:. dead f****** serious.what alot of these ignorant people can't seem to figure out is that it doesn't have to be all complex, and it doesn't have to be slapped to make a good bass player.whether a bass player can slap or can't at all does NOT mean they "suck".nor do they "suck" just cause they don't have the most complex basslines in the world.

The bass solo is highly over-rated, in my very humble opinion.

I agree - but then, I think any truly good bass player should be able to play a competent bass solo... but they should also be able to play in an ensemble playing pretty much anything... and they should be able to play pretty much any style of music... and improvise... and write.

There aren't a lot of truly good bass players out there - and a surprising number of the truly good players are session guys no one has ever heard of.

Absolutely, I come from the same understanding as you do, and I agree 100% also.
