Genz Benz Neo Pak 3.5

There are a few threads out there about this head, but most of them dont have too much information in them.

Ive listened to the sound samples and demos on the net, and it sounds really impressive.

The only downside ive heard is that they arent as full sounding as the bigger GB heads.

Anyone have anything they'd like to comment about this head?

Cheers!

haha, i wish, actually, i dont, really dont need the excessive recording stuff :p

Tho, on saying that, a decent mic wouldnt go a miss :p

For the price id get selling my firebass and 4x10 i wouldnt be spending any extra buying the GB.

The main reason is so i have an amplifier i can take to practices without having to think about. The rooms we use have alot of crappy amps, and only a few good ones (most of which recently disappeared recently!). And i cant exactly chuck the firebass in a backpack with a couple folders in it, yet the GB would fit in. I travel mostly by bus, and practices are usually on days when i am at uni, and i dont really want to lug the firebass around all day.

Also, the GB has pretty sweet looking blue lights :smug:

Its nothing definate yet, im just looking at options.

Another benifit is the GB would take up less room than the firebass and 410 :p

I think I've posted about the same comments in every thread about it. Heck, I think I even started most of them! I was pretty impressed by the Neo-Pak, and would definitely love to pick one up in the near future. I really don't know how loud it would get, seeing as it's relatively low powered, but then again, I only tried it out with 1x12s and one 2x10, all 8 ohms. I've never used any of the larger GB amps, so I can't compare it to those. And the blue lights are definitely the strongest selling point of the amp! ;)

Okay, the Neo-Pak is here. I've only played with it a bit, and am even fooling with it some right now as I sit here. I also picked up the GB bag for transport.

This little guy is great. I've yet to play it at a gig (will this weekend) but sitting here in my practice room it is very nice sounding.

Here's a collection of random thoughts about it:

It sounds the same as the 1200 to my ears. Perhaps I'll know more after I get it out somewhere. The features are the same more or less, so you'll be able to quickly find your way around the head.

It seems to have a little more gain than the tube channel on the 1200. Not enough to call it different. I just notice that the O/L light will flash a tad sooner on the input stage.

Can't say I've noticed any missing "oomph" from the head. I sat it on top of my 1200, which was on top of the 212T. Then I kept swapping the speakon back and forth between the two heads. Again, no difference in tone that I can hear.

It has plenty of power. I'm pretty sure this will be the head that goes with me most of the time. Some might be surprised by my next statement, but if you understand the relationship between watts and perceived volume, then it will make sense. Volume difference between the 1200 and Neo-Pak is very minimal into a SINGLE cab. This is running the EQ flat. Of course, the 1200 lets you really boost EQ settings and retain headroom. The 1200 would really pull away from the Neo-Pak with a 2nd, 3rd or 4th cab. You can push four 8 ohm cabs with the 1200. Only 2 with the Neo-Pak.

Head is very light, and looks stunning. The large front vents allow you to see inside the head, and the tube sits squarely in the center. There's a nice blue LED behind the tube, so it glows blue, with a little hot red center! Very cool looking. Makes the head very sexy. Nice job whoever came up with this.

The fan is in the rear, and it pulls air inside the head, and blows it out those cool vents in the front. The fan is virtually silent. I haven't yet been able to make it kick up to a higher speed, but I haven't played it very loud for more than a minute or two either.

The bag is a perfect fit. Snug, and padded plenty for protection. Shoulder strap will make toting it very easy.

I also bought a NeoX-112T to compliment this little guy. I know you didn't ask about the cab, but just thought I'd throw this in there. This little 112 is great. It sounds very much like the 212. In fact, I think it sounds a little bit better. Slightly more growly and mid present. But not much. Just a touch. It's light, and easy to cary. The Neo-Pak and 112T would make an excellent rehearsal rig, and would handle most small and medium gigs where things aren't blaringly loud. I bought the two together to use this summer for outdoor combo gigs at some local waterfront restaraunts. After hearing how much power it has, I plan to use it in place of my 1200/212 rig this weekend just for fun.

I'll give you some more details after that if you're still interested.

Please, please, please get back after you have gigged it. I am looking for a small head that I can use with a 212 for most gigs including outdoor gigs. All gigs would have PA support. From what I am reading, the Neo has more headroom than what a "normal" 350 head would provide. I also understand that it can run at 2 ohms around 420 watts.

I can't imagine needing more power with a PA...

I didnt think it could run 2 ohms?

Also, surely if it was running at 2 ohms it would be reaching more the 600-650 watt region?

And Eublet, i didnt realise til now that the 1200 went to 2 ohms, id always thought it was 1200 watts at 4 ohms, so yeah, i can see there not being a huge difference, especially at 8 ohms, only about 3-4 dB difference, and at 4 ohms it'll be about 5-6 dB.

Im glad its pretty loud, thats one thing i was a little worried about, but should be all good!

Thanks for the review, i cant wait to hear how it does at your gig!!!

PS, does the head seem pretty solid, even tho its light?

Cheers!

Neo-Pak goes down only to 4 ohms.

As for it being solid, it looks very solid. In fact, when you pick it up it's a little alarming at first because it's so light. But the casing is very solid, and the face plate has that brushed metal look just like the GBE's. Same bright blue LED's, etc. I'll say it again. If you want a light weight TUBE head for gigging, this is it. For me, it's exactly what I want. Most of the small gigs I play are more laid back and melodic, so the tube sound fits perfectly. That's not to say it doesn't sound great for slap or other percussive styles. Check out the video of Roger slapping it on the GB website. Sounds darn nice, huh? It's a great head.

Edit: Another thing I like. The Neo-Pak isn't so small that it's hard to adjust the knobs or read what each one does. From the looks of this guy, they probably could have made it a little smaller had they really wanted to. Looks like there's plenty of space inside the head. Lots of air. I'm guessing that helps with cooling. I haven't heard the fan kick up yet. And it gives you plenty of room to work the EQ, include some nice lights on the front, etc. I was looking at an Eden WTX as well, but it just felt so cramped. It's just too small. I feel the same way about the AI gear. Not to mention those units are solid state, and this is tube. I really like the Neo-Pak, even more than the 1200 believe it or not. It'll get much more use for me.

Neo-Pak goes down only to 4 ohms.

hasbeen is a Genz Product Manager and he says it will do 2 ohms. That's where I got the info. Still, probably not a good idea to run at 2 very often.

I'm still concerned about the available headroom with 350 watts. I know that Genz is usually very conservative on power estimates. I have an 800 watt Peavey head if I ever need to go big, but I hate lugging it around. It weighs a ton.

Just wondering if the Neo 3.5 would be enough at an outdoor gig with minimal PA support. That has me worried.

On another of the several Genz threads that are currently actively on TalkBass, Hasbeen very concisely said the Neo-Pak produces 500 watts at 2 ohms. Nothing more. I posted a reply to that thread asking him to verify this. Yes, he is the marketing guy for Genz, but we have conflicting info, and it'd be great if he'd go on record to saying the Neo will do 2 ohms, and under what conditions.

Obviously, the amp isn't built for the same kind of wide-open 2 ohm operation that the GBE 750 and 1200 are. Maybe it can be run conservatively at 2 ohms. Hopefully, we'll hear something from him by tomorrow as the work week begins.

Maybe it can be run at 2 ohms, but i agree, until i hear them say it, im not going to try it.

Its one thing the marketing guy doing his thing, getting people to buy a product, and its another that they dont openly specify that it goes to 2 ohms, if it did safely im sure they would have noted that on the website or in the manual

I was curious about your 800 watt head, and see your profile says Max 800? surely you mean the Max 700?

If that is the case, its only 475 watts at 4 ohms, and wouldnt be much louder than the Genz Benz, only a db or two.
