Genz Benz - Official Streamliner Amp Thread -NEW !!

After 2 days of reading, i think ive caught up!!

Are any existing 9 owners thinking about picking up a streamliner, then slaving either one depending on tone requirement/preferred front end? Ive got a vt bass infront of my 9 at the moment and really looking frward to the sl900! Ive wanted a backup/ rig of doom for a while and gonna give this whirl once out!!

So is the uk release similar to us? Bass direct will allowing preorders new year i believe, just got to wait for that row boat to cross the pond i guess! :bassist:

Yes, NAV is like GAS but with a little more confusion, and a hint of motion sickness. Also, it is the first in a series of designer GAS maladies that are uniquely applicable to specific genres of gear. Want a new bass? That's NBV. New cab? That's NCV. And so on... :ninja:

LOL! "NAV"...that's great! I'm kind of there right now. I just bought a Presonus Studio Channel and have maybe 3 hours play time on it. With a VT Bass in front of it, it's massive. I've never had a full parametric EQ before and the amount of tweaking you can do is almost too much. I can get a number of great sounds out of it, but still haven't learned to tweak it to the point of getting "an awesome SVT sound" "an awesome reggae sound" etc. I gots me some NAV! The Streamliner will be a must-buy, I'm pretty sure. I've always wanted a SVT, but didn't want to deal with the weight or the price. If I can get the 90% solution with the Streamliner, I will add it to my rotation/collection.

Can't quite see why anyone at this point would choose the very large and heavy 1200 over the Max 12 if you were using two 4ohm cabs or the Max 9 if you were using one large 4ohm cab or two 8ohm cabs.

Good question... I think the answer would be that the big power supplies still do something that little power supplies can't quite match. The gap has gotten awfully small mind you, but there is just that extra bit of "traction" you get with a big amp. The GBE series amps have it, the lightweights to date do not, at least not as much.

Having said that, the GBE1200 is so grossly beyond my requirements that I am selling mine. My GBE400 is more than adequate for my needs, and it does have the "traction". I will be very interested to see what the Streamliner and Max 9.0 bring to the table, though I'm sure that the Shuttle 9.0 would come close to floating my boat - especially since I've moved to the AE212. I do intend on finding out this spring...

Since you already have a 1200, I'm not sure you need to really try any of them other than the Streamliner. The Max 12 and Shuttle 9 both have a bit more bottom end than the 1200 with the EQ's all flat, but that's about it. The MAX will give you the FET and Tube channels just like your 1200 if that's what you want. The Shuttle 9.0 will sound pretty much just like the Tube channel on your 1200. The differences in tone between all these heads is very small IMHO, contrary to what others have reported.

The Streamliner is really the first head that promises to be almost wholly different from all the other Genz heads. Do you want that kind of tube gain stage?

Hey, thanks for the take from someone who has tried all of these amps! I think, based on your opinion, I should start by trying the Streamliner. If I don't like it, then I know I should just go with a Shuttle 9 or SM 9 and it will be all good. I do plan on keeping my 1200. I love that head and someday I might find myself in a gig big enough to warrant it. But in the meantime, I need something I can throw in a bag and carry in on my shoulder!

Besides, something tells me that I might be investing in a couple of those 1288's at some point. It might be nice to be able to pump 1000 lead sled watts into those beasties.;)

Buffalo Bob,

Boy do I hear you about the 1200, but simply unmatched performance! The only question now is get a completely new voice with the Streamliner, or get a similar but lightweight option with the Max 9. Or win a lottery and buy the whole damn bunch...

Or if you're Tombowlus!:D

Buying all three would be really nice, but I think the best way to approach this is to try the one that's going to be most different first. But of course, if you like the Streamliner, then you'll STILL NEED the lightweight alternative to the GBE1200, so, ..........

never mind. Just buy the streamliner and one of the nines.:rollno:

Really cool Andy. I really like his acting, even better than his stand-up. He seems like a really intelligent man, as well as being very talented. Nice to know he's a good guy as well.
And bonus (for me), he also owns horses.

I'm thinking of that exactly, sort of a build-your-own SHTL9/STML900 Max 18 (with "pick one" versus tone blend option) for 2 x 4ohm cab situations.

I've already thought this throu...

I would by-pass one channel of the SM9.0, lets say the tube channel for example

feed both amp with a y-cable from the bass or one directly from the bass and the other off the tuner-out

SL fx send goes to SM tube channel fx return

SM master Out to SL fx return In

:hyper: :smug:

with this, the SL effectively replace one channel of the SM, and you could switch using the on-board button or the foot-switch of the SM

eek... just read the SM manual again and the tube channel fx is pre EQ, so that's not really a by-pass ..

A question for those who may know - how does the low-end compare to the other Genz amps? One of my favorite features is the controlled low-end and higer frequency roll-off; does the Streamliner retain this design philosophy, or is it a complete departure?

I'd have to know more specifically what you mean. Are you asking with everything set at 12:00? There really isn't a way to do an Apples to Apples comparo because the tone networks are entirely different. I realize the desire to compare the Shuttle to the Streamliner, but I can't stress enough that one has nothing to do with the other. It would be like comparing a Ford Explorer with a Mustang because they are both made from the same company.

Having said that, with all our designs, we try to stay away from frequencies that are just going to add high-end noise or low-end rumble that you can discern.

Buttttttt, with THAT being said, to the ear, I think most will find the Streamliner "wider" and "fatter" with a larger sonic footprint......at the lows and highs.

Edit: And yes, I know since this is the Internet, somebody is going to post: "Well, the 1995 Mustang shares the same CV boots as the 1992 Explorer since Ralph Pudmaker was the lead design engineer for both projects. And his brother worked at the OEM supplier of CV boots".

Yes, I was asking from the standpoint of general frequencies, similar to our exchange in another thread regarding soundmen and making bass rumbly. I think your wider and fatter covers it :)
