Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 discussion thread

I'm not exactly "doubling," but I use both a Stingray 5 and a Conklin MEU electric upright at my shows.

The Stingray goes into the front of my Shuttle, and the MEU goes into a Joe Meek ThreeQ preamp and then into the Aux In on the back of the Shuttle. That gives me two unique channels and makes it much easier to level out the two instruments.

I'm thinking of getting a Shuttle 9.0 and see that you use it with both slab and upright bass. Right now I'm using an Acoustic Image Focus 2R for doubling (mostly jazz and funk). Do you use a pre-amp in front of the Shuttle 9.0 to compensate for the input resistance of the amp, which I think is rated at 500K ohms (pretty low for piezo pickups)? I have a SanAmp Para Driver that I could use as a pre and was also thinking that an Fdeck HPF preamp would work.

How does your upright sound using a Shuttle 9.0, particularly with a tube pre? I'm also considering an EA Doubler but am somewhat concerned about headroom issues with that amp. I have a Radial Bigshot I/O switcher, so doubling on the Shuttle 9.0 wouldn't be an issue for me. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The AI is highly respected for DB. We have a lot of DB players using the Shuttle too.

I don't know of any personally, that use the 9.0 but, I know many that use the 6.0 combos. Ron Carter has been gigging with one and so has Nat Reeves.

Many use the Realist system from David Gage. His shop in NYC sells the Shuttle too.

FWIW, I was a jazz performance major on DB so this amp did have that application in mind during the design.

The Shuttle 9.0 is great with UB no doubt. The input impedance works great with my Realist. My only issue I find is having to cut the Bass and Low Mids on UB and this can be a bit of a pain on the fly Doubling so I ordered an Fdeck. The Fdeck will allow me (I think) not to have to reEQ on the fly by cutting those pesky frequencies that normally give me fits with my UB.

I'm sure there will be some improvement as to the higher impedance but the Shuttle does a darn good job interfacing with a Piezo.

The Shuttle 9.0 is the most wonderful tool I have ever had the pleasure of using in my time with the Bass. It really has become more of that thing in the background that requires no fuss and quietly gets the job done. I wish I had two of them.

Our Keyboard player could benefit with one as well.

Thank you Red Planet, hasbeen, and Modulator for the input on the Shuttle application for upright. The use of the auxiliary in jack for UB is an interesting-I would definitely try this for doubling with my SansAmp or an Fdeck HPF. Sounds like there is a Shuttle in my future!

I have a 9.0 which I'm enjoying very much. When we were
auditioning the 9.0 next to the new SWR Amplite, the 9.0
sounded better with less fuss. We used a 10 megohm buffer
with both Full Circle and Realist.
I have a Paradriver that I sometimes use with the 9.0 going
into the effects return. It works great for upright or electric.
Using the 9.0 you could go either way....Use the 9.0 preamp
for the upright bass, (with a buffer pre) and the Paradriver
for the electric bass in the effects return, or the reverse.
It will all work and sound great. However...

For a number of years I've used a Focus I as a doubling head
with spectacular results.
Use the Focus for the upright bass because it has the buffer
pre built in, and use the Paradriver in the effects return of the
Focus for electric bass. Both amps will work well for your
applicaton.

The 9.0 with an Uber210 is the most used rig I own. 500 watts into a 210 is massive enough fpr most peoples gigging. For uprigh I do prefer the tone of the 12 inch speaker.

No there is not. The protection circuits monitor and shut the power supply down when any dangerous faults occur. The AC line fuse merely protects against the unlikely possibility of catastrophic failure. I don't recall ever having a fuse open where it shouldn't have. This is on thousands and thousands of units.

Cool , sounds High tech , I'm guessing there is a reset time or does it just turn right back on ? One less spare part I need to keep around Thank you

Power off the amp and then turn it back on will reset it.

soon, and was wondering which speakon input socket I should be using to plug into a 4ohm Uber 410 cabinet, the top or bottom? or does it not matter?

any day now , i'll be powering two 8 ohm LDS 15/6.5 cabs with my Shuttle 9.0 ...
would it make any difference if i just chained the cabs together ,
or should i use each speaker outlet separately ?

Either way will work.

All true. Personally I would go direct from amp to speaker cabinets separately. What the heck I like the shortest, most direct path. By the way with that rig when you thump an open E or B, you first better find something to hold on to. It's going to kill! Please let us know how that works out for you.
