Genz-Benz Shuttle Megathread: Part II

The 3.0 also has less headroom when driving an 8 ohm load at 175W, so it's normal to overdrive it a little past half way up. You get a lot more headroom and volume when you run 300W into a good 4 ohm cab (like my Goliath Jr.) or an additional 8 ohm extension cab.

Thanks Maddrakkett, yes, it puts out a LOT more into my 4 ohm UL410! I never overdrive the front end....it's just that, when it runs out of headroom in the power amp, it clips instead of limiting. Maybe that's normal?

Looking at the back of the amp at the 6-contact DIN connector, we'll call the single contact at the top of the connector "1", and the rest of them "2" through "6", starting from the left and going counterclockwise around the semicircular arrangement of contacts.

Mute: Short 1 and 3
Low Boost: Short 1 and 4
Mid Scoop: Short 1 and 5
HF Attack: Short 1 and 6

The front panel buttons need to be "out" (not engaged) in order for the footswitch to do its thing.

My understanding is that the limiter should engage BEFORE you get power amp clipping, so that you have time to back off the Master Out. Now it is always possible to push it too hard and cause clipping in spite of the limiter, but the limiter should at least flash its blue light before you hear clipping...

I won't get a chance to test mine for until sometime tomorrow, but when I tested in the store before I bought it, I thought I remembered seeing the blue limiter LED before I hit clipping, but that was several weeks agao and my memory isn't that good. I'll try and get a test done of mine tomorrow and report back...

The Limiter LED is RED, not blue. It flashes when the soft limiter starts engaging. You still have headroom in the head when this happens. It's the contstant long-steady pulses on the limiter that you have to watch out for.

This is all to retain the feel of the dynamics. We spent a lot of time with bass players testing various limiting circuits I came up with and everyone liked this the best because it felt right and had a little of the old school sound."

So my amp is doing what it is supposed to do. I just wanted to make sure. Gotta love the GB support!

Yeah, I LOVE the G-B tech support here! :) And I hadn't set my limiter off, so I forgot it is red - so used to seeing the blue ones light all the time! :embarrassed:

Stats? I don't need no stinkin' stats! My eyes, ears, and wallet tell me the Shuttle is better than a LMII...

Now, I could not locate a thread or club specific to the LMII. There are a lot of small threads pitting the LMII against other amps and there are megathreads for Mark Bass amps, but the only large thread dedicated to the LMII is the "LMII First Impressions" which has 173 replies and 7,593 views. Then there's the "Genz-Benz Shuttle Megathread" with 1,089 replies and 48,701 views, and this "Genz-Benz Shuttle Megathread Part 2" which has 270 replies and 12,377 views as of this posting.

The Genz-Benz Shuttle series is smokin' HOT!!! :D

I'm proud to say that the originator of the G-B Shuttle megathreads is finally an owner of a 6.0!

I've just finished the final weekend of a musical theatre show with the 6.0 coupled with an EA M-Line Wizzy and it did everything I could dream of. Very, very musical.

The show was Grease at the Oak Ridge Playhouse. I had a great time. The Shuttle was just the bomb all around. In fact, it was 'greased lightning'!

I played my favorite 4-string, the XZ-2 with EMG HBCS pickups and BTS system, and LaBella double-ball roundwounds. With the Shuttle and the Wizzy, it was Perfect!

As far as stats, I think the difference is that someone started a separate Shuttle 6.0 thread, whereas most of the LMII stuff is within the huge and long-running general Markbass megathread. I don't think you can diss the LMII in the number of fans or number of posts department .. it's made quite an impact here at TB and beyond, and for good reason. It's a killer little amp! Yeah, I obviously like Genz Benz gear better, but I have a lot of respect for the LMII and its Italian brethren ...

(p.s. I know the stats stuff was all in good fun ... )

Yeah, the LMII is a fantastic head. I like the Class A/B design as it really gives it a good tone with all the SS punch you could ever want. There are definitely hundreds of them spread around our TB brothers and sisters here, and the talk over them was HUGE for quite a long time, and there's still daily chatter about them. It's all good. I didn't feel I was in competition with MB before the Shuttles were released, and I still don't feel like I am even now that I own one. I'm just happy to have what I have!

Well, I will soon own both the LMII and 6.0. The shuttle is enroute to me now. It will take me a great deal of time to figure out which one I like better as I'm quite indecisive.

I'm sure I'll enjoy owning both. Markbass is a very innovation co. Checked out the Mo Mark yet? Modular amp system... That thing is pure genius.

I cut & pasted this from the 'shuttle 6.0' thread.

I have been compiling all the settings users have posted into a Word file. I thought I'd post them here so we have it all lumped together in one place. As my reading continues and I find new examples of user's favourite settings I will add them.

The first one is my personal favourite and its been listed twice for emphasis.

Gain- Between 3-4:00 depending on how hard I was digging. Red light went from always flashing to only flashing on the loudest notes depending on the same.
Input Volume- Between 12-1:00
Low- 2:30
Mid- 1:00
Mid Freq- Varied between 10-11:00
High- 1:00 The tweeter was turned off on the cab.
LF Boost- On
Master- 9:00

wow....just as an FYI, you found my exact eq settings for 90% of room variances. I do run my inputs a little lower though and the output higher. Genz-Benz, Product Manager

I am waiting for a hotel spun video to load to youtube. Not my best work but a 4 a.m. what do you really expect? Even hotel security was impressed with the tone, then they said "SHUT IT OFF"

Personally, I found another nice tone with my P bass (NP4s and flats) schroeder 1212R with the following:

lows: 1:00
mids: 10:00
Paramids: 10:00
Highs: Noon
all filters off
