Genz-Benz Shuttle Megathread: Part II

Just got home from a killer jam where we play loud and all wear earplugs. I brought my Stingray 4, Shuttle 6.0 and a pair of Eden 210 cabs (XLT top, XST bottom). What a sound. The guys had never heard or seen the Shuttle until today and they were just stunned.

The growl, punch and sheer volume of this rig was really something. I haven't been able to really push the Shuttle to its limits until today and I was more then impressed. I had the tube gain set about 3/4 of the way up, the input volume at 2/3 up and hte master only 1/4 up. Its colossal sounding! This amp snarls and my Stingray and the cabs were a perfect match.

We jam louder then I would ever play live on stage so I am really wondering if I need to hold onto my larger and much heavier racked amp. There was no lack of punch, clarity or volume and I had volume to spare. My input clip light was only coming on intermittantly and the output clip light came on fairly regularly when playing hard but the tone was smooth and growly without sounding like i was out of juice.

This little wonder impresses me more all the time.

Guys how regularly does your CLP/LM led on the Master Section lights up? It seems that it lights to me pretty "early" in volume... I thought I would be able to push this baby a lot... How is it with you guys?

Sorry Sptz, I missed your question, had a very late gig last night.

By "early" in the volume". I assume that you mean with the controls not turned up very high (knob position).

This has nothing to do with anything other than the output level of your bass, the volume you are playing at and our choice of internal gain and pot (control) taper. For example, if you were to turn your bass down by 50%, you would be able to trun the amp's volume or gain controls up by the same 50% for no net difference in the amp's output level. Additionally, on our amps, the clip-limit LED indicates that limiting is occuring for the first 6dB and after that the amp begins to clip. There is nothing wring with the limit LED flashing, but if it's on more than it's flashing and you hear distortion, you are clipping the power amplifier.

As a general bit of information and history, the output levels of bass pickups have changed greatly over the last 20-30 years. Passive pickups, especially single coils, used to output about 100-250mV. This is what the "grand old classic" amps were designed around and in part why they tend to have a more agressive overdrive when used with today's basses which have higher output levels. Nowadays, it's not uncommon for a bass to output between 250mV to as high as 4 or 5 volts. Amp designers must do their best to accomodate a wide range of input levels, which means that with a hot bass the amp will not be turned up nearly as high as with a lower output bass to achieve the same speaker levels.

If you have an active pickup, it's worth checking to see in the pickup manufacturer has made the provisions for adjusting the pickup output level with a trip control that would be internal to the bass located on the onboard preamp's PCB. Often these are set to 100% from the manufacturers, and they are handy to adjust the output level down to something closer to any older passive basses you may play.

Hope this answers your question.

Took the Shuttle 3.0 10T to a full rehearsal last week...just to see if it could. Three guitars, drums and bass(and vocals). Guitars were using various Fender combos-nothing outrageous, but what they normally use on stage. There was an SVT in the corner, but hey-I was just curious.
The little Shuttle did just fine. Not a whole lot left in reserve, but it did sit effortlessly in the mix. No one could believe all of the low end sound that came from that itty-bitty box.
Just another (great) tool in the toolbox.

Turns out it's not a half bad guitar amp either, if you're just looking for clean sounds. I usually play my hollowbody guitar through a Peavey Classic 50 4x10 combo with the highs rolled off, neck pickup soloed. Jazz guitar sound.

Just for giggles I plugged my git-fiddle into the Shuttle and Avatar Neo 2x12 setup.

It certainly did not suck! I didn't want to muss with the settings on my amp too badly, but that setup had a great tone and if I sucked out the low end I could see gigging with it!

I thinking about GB Shuttle 6.0 - dimensions, weight, controls, tube preamp, power... everything looks great but...
I heard (yeah I know, but I didnt have a chance to try) that there is problem when you turn the volume and/or gain a past 12 o´clock it starts to transmit intermittently ("in-dis-creet-time-mo-ments").

Did someone heard about it?

our of litterally thousands sold, we had about 20 total units with that problem. .....oxidized jacks in the effects loop.

Footnote: we had about 30 returned to us for that "problem" but the other 10 units were:
* bad cabinets from other mfgs.
* a couple, yes, a couple of bass guitars with bad electronics and/or dead batteries.
* a spilled beer in one. Bud light no less. :rollno:;)

Actually, I had my guitar amp crap out at a gig and had my 6.0/NEOX112 in my SUV.

Turned the tweeter all the way off and it totally ripped. The clean tone was pretty nice actually, and it takes pedals pretty darn good too!!

As we talk about issues with the shuttle, my 6.0 makes noises when adjusting the volume with the preamp turned on. Sounds a bit like a scratching poti. Does this happen with sombody elses amp too or may it have its course in he problems i had with the old diplexer (is it the right word for the frequency-separtor?) in my cabinet?

When i first got the shuttle, it did not work with my cabinet, which made the amp turn off immediatly after setting the power on. After i changed the diplexer everthing is fine exept of the noise when turning the gain, tube and mastervolume.

Should i do something, like changing a fuse or anything? I am using the amp here in europe on 220 Volts.

I remember your issue with your faulty crossover in your cabinet.

You have a "scratchy" pot..dust or something got in there. Go to an electronics store and find some contact cleaner. Spray it in there, turn the knob a couple of times and you'll be all set.

just checking in,

had a pop/punk gig, and used my shuttle w/ my epifani ul112 pair, along w/ my lakland bob glaub.

tweeters rolled down, bass 3:00, mid freq set all the way counterclockwise for the lower mids, set to 3:00, treble noon, low switch on, mid scoop on, sounded badass w/ my blue tortex pics.

Thanks for sharing your setup. It seems like this must have been a very scooped sound with massive bass. Did you have trouble cutting through the mix?

I was wondering if anyone else is getting noise when engaging the mid scoop button (kindof a high-mid noise). I get it with the HF attack but that is understandable as it is boosting high frequencies. I am surprised that the mid scoop is adding noise as I assumed (yah, I know that is dangerous) that it only cut the mids and didn't boost the highs or high mids.

BTW, the noise cannot be removed by turning down the treble as it appears to be post eq.

Thanks

My midscoop button adds hiss, but not as much as the HF attack. I don't use either, though.

My first Shuttle would exhibit scratchy pot symptoms, but only when signal was being passed through the amp. If I wasn't playing, turning the knobs was silent. That didn't sound like something that contact cleaner would fix, but I never tried it before replacing the amp. The new Shuttle doesn't have that issue..it just needs more Berg. :ninja:
