Genz-Benz Shuttle Megathread: Part II

I compared the shuttle 6.0 to my Peavey Pro Bass 500 in a preactice session with my punkrock Band (Link Removed) and it sounded really nice. It lacked a bit in terms of the bottom end, but I have to admit I was a little scared to run it with the clipping light flashing all the time.

I played it via a custom cabinet made by House of Speakers, which is a 2x10+ 15+ 6-Combination with sica-neodyium-speakers, running at 4 Ohms.

The peavey seems to have more power than the GB. To get the same volume the peavey delivers at about 10 o´clock i had to turn the master up to 3/4 at the GB.

As the handling of the GB is much better than the tweaky peavey (lots of knobs), do you think it is problematic to push the GB into clipping constantly?

As an alternative i thought about gettin a 4x12 Neo. Did anyone try the shuttle with something like this?

FWIW, knob position (3/4 vs. 10 o clock) is not indicative of power.....it could just as easily be the taper of the pot. We purposely use a taper that doesn't "come on" too early.

Clipping- don't worry about the light....use your ears. Are you hearing clipping? The light comes on, way before clipping, when the limiter comes into play.

Thats what i thought. Actually i heard no clipping but did not want to damage the shuttle right away. I will have to give it another try and try some more with the EQ to get the bottom end the Peavey delivers.

I've used the Shuttle at a number of gigs now and I trust it. It's a pretty versatile amp. I'm very happy with it.

Mids barely boosted with the freq ~9:00, lows dialed back a touch (11:30 - 11:45), highs at noon, tube gain at noon, FET gain dimed, Master volume to taste (or lack thereof). I'm playing with the high boost button occasionally, but it's not really necessary.

I hope that it's resilient. It seems good so far. It's perfectly suited to my needs.

I'm still going to play with various tubes.

KO

Yep +1 on the Shuttle, the red light is just a friendly reminder that the amp is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. If it sounds good it's ok. The red light thing can be scary as we are all so used to "red light means bad". After you play the Shuttle for awhile, you see that it seems to sound better when that red light comes on. My GBE1200 is the same way.

Trust your ears.

I just wanted to add something about GB users who have mentioned that they thought their Shuttle amps were "soft" on the low end.

I personally don't think its any big deal to use the tone control to fatten up the low end. If you boost it up the amp will get plenty of bottom so I don't see a problem with that. Combine that with the low boost and you will get enough bottom to give your speakers a good test. That's just the way the tone curve on GB front end is set up. It doesn't mean the amp is soft.

Remember we are dealing with a front end that also has a boost control for the lows. You can imagine what would happen if someone cranks the low tone control all the way up with the amp at high playing volume and then engages the low boost. Can we say possible over extended speaker cones if you have a not so good cabinet.

I have yet to find a problem with having not enough low end available with either of my GB amps. Use of the low control with or without the boost on is MORE than enough lows for any type of gig.

Its not that there isn't enough lows, if you EQ them in, its that when you do dial in more lows, you lose headroom.

When I had my shuttle, I was able to get a very nice tone out of it, for my tastes. However, doing so decreased the overall volume capability as I lost headroom from the eq changes I made to get the tone I liked. That's what I found anyway.

I also realized I just prefer a total SS tone for my style tone preferences.

Thanks for your reply Agedhorse.
Just one more thing I lilke about Genz Benz, excellent support!

I often have to turn down the low EQ on my SHuttle 3 10 combo. Not saying that some users may feel they need more low end, but for me, there seems to be plenty.

Me to...on my Shuttle 6.0 running through a Berg HT112. I do almost 100% theater gigs these days. Booming old stages and theaters is my #1 problem. I just finished a run of Jesus Christ Superstar in Ocean Grove NJ in a 115 year old theater/auditorium. I needed clarity, tone and punch, but at a low volume. I backed off the lows and backed off at ~ 300 Hz on the semi-parametric EQ...problem solved. Otherwise, I would have had to play at a volume which was so low that I wouldn't have had any dynamic room. The gain stage also really worked to my advantage in that I was able to back off on the pre volume and up the master giving me all the dynamic range I needed. Great little amp, and not bass shy at all for my needs.

Cheers,
Dennis

Buflow, how's the Shuttle with the PS112? I'm strongly considering this cab to go with my Shuttle 6.0.
I'm grinnin ear to ear. Low E has a grit to it gives me goose bumps and a terminal smile. More grit than my UL310.
I'm really just blown away with the thickness of sound from this little rig. And just dead thumping of the strings changes the air pressure in my little music room, but all the mids and high end is very controlable. This combo puts the fun back into my practice...

Guys how regularly does your CLP/LM led on the Master Section lights up? It seems that it lights to me pretty "early" in volume... I thought I would be able to push this baby a lot... How is it with you guys?

Gotta pop back in for a few.......
That little 6.0 has been killin' everyone who has either used it (I let a few guys use it at church), or heard it.

The only complaint I ever get is at our main campus when I roll in there with the 6.0 is for me to use the GBE1200!!!!!!!!!!! (the house amp)

I still love it though.
Actually just been using it as a pre/DI with no cab as we use in-ears a lot these days.

Question agedhorse....and I think I know the answer, but I'm OK with running it with no cab as long as I keep the master vol all the way down correct???
I think I'm cool as I've run other brands like this.

No problem, volumes down or up.
