Genz Benz Streamliner Part 3!!!!

I got to hear my SL900 do the bouncy thing last night.. I was playing LOUD.. and the way the amp sounds when you wind it up. does have that bouncy thing of a tube amp does when it is getting wound up... it was a sort of bluesy, country gig... nice

Doing a fly date tomorrow. .SL900 is going with me.... yeeee hawww

I used an ABM500 EVO for a few years too.. I agree is sort of does that... but its different too.. The highs on the SL are very silky..

I had an abm500 for about 10 years. Loved it. Sold it to go small/light. Dont still have it but would say the S900 is closer in vibe than any other micro i've had (RH450, LMTube, MB Fusion).

First gig with the S900 last night. My jazz/funk/soul "trio +" which is drums, bass, keys, 2 horns, and 3 different vocalists. Was running into a single Berg AE210 and had Rob Allen Deep 5, Roscoe C5 fretless, and a new P-bass. I've previously done this same venue and gig with both MB LMTube and GK MB Fusion heads (running the same cab). I am listening to the recordings from last night - I record every gig from out in the house somewhere with a Zoom H4n. Very different tone from the GK head despite both being 3-tube preamps. As others have noticed, there is a lot of "girth" to the notes with the S900. I had eq with a little bass rolled off, a slight boost at 600hz and a slight treble boost. Gain was about 1 o'clock, vol about 12 o'clock.

I can say that a P-bass absolutely kills through this head. It is big and round and wraps the songs in warm goodness. The Rob Allen had huge low end, but it does that through most any head. The difference was the highs. The piezo can be a challenge, and for instance with the MB Fusion it is fairly grating - I have to either roll the treble way down on the bass, or I roll treble way down on the amp, and hi mid is down a lot too. With the S900 I didn't have to do any of that - it is way smoother through the upper mids and highs, and the piezo wasn't harsh one bit.

Amp is a keeper. The LMTube is already sold, and the GK will be backup for now. The GK and GB are vastly different amps. Having 3 tubes in the preamp doesn't mean amp are going to sound the same or even similar.

The nice feature on the SL900's treble knob is it can work as a sort of passive tone control when moved to the left. Dont know if that is what is happening but it seams like that and can really tame a Piezos top end on some basses..
I too used my P5 and the SL kills in that vein.. just smokin good..

I'm sure there are probably not alot of flat haters either. :D What I think is cool is that you like the way it smoothed out the highs on rounds and so do I, even though we come from completely different preferred places in the tonal spectrum.

Exactly. Definitely plenty in here for everybody!!
And I agree with other's who have compared the treble knob on this amp to a passive tone control. VERY similar. Someone with an inherently dark OR bright bass would find a lot to like in there.

Sure it's not the YWCA? :hiding:

Ok fine I admit it. YOU try and book a regular schedule with the YMCA. Booked solid. Besides, rates are better at the YWCA and you just might meet a cougar there.

Very cool to hear, especially the Rob Allen. I'm eager to play my BSX 5 string EUB thru this head as well as my soon-to-come fretless Modulus Q5.

This afternoon I swung thru my local store to put the SL600 thru my Accugroove 115L, and was suprised at how loud THAT amp is into an 8ohm load. I still prefer the extra headroom of the SL900 for the gigs I'll be doin, but the SL600 is no wilting flower. Shop had one SL600 left and told me they're going to get in a bunch more of both. I'm also trying to setup a time this week to compare the SL600/900 with my Aguilar DB750 and the Shuttle 9.0/12.0 that the store has. VERY smitten by Genz Benz obviously!!

Has anyone played the 600 yet.
I'm gassing hard for this head, with an AE212.
Should be a good match, with a 600 watt cab like the AE212.
Or should I just get the 900, and run it with the AE212 ?

600 watts is more than enough into 4 ohms for almost any gig imo. My Shuttlemax 6.0 has more than enough juice for any gig I play, and I play about 5 per week. My SL 600 should be here soon and will buddy up with my Genz Benz NeoX 212T and my Avatar TB 153.

I agree with others, the Liner has a very silky smooth top end but it will get bright if you need it.

The Bottom is pure Gerth.

It does have this quality in the give department when pushed which I like very much. My Niner can make my Berg HT112ER cabs sound pushed a little too hard if I crank it. The give of the Liner makes cranking the amp smoother into these cabs but it's not all squishy like the MarkBass amps are when you crank them.

The 900 pairs very nicely with the AE212. Jim's cabs seem to open up nicely with a fair amount of juice. IMHO and all that.:)

I only demo'd a Bass Terror. I'd say they are different - the S900 can go from very clean to very dirty. I found that the Orange went dirty very fast. It didn't have the same amount of headroom, and the eq section wasn't as flexible. You can get pretty close to an Orange type sound out of the S900, but not vice versa.

I'm recording with my Streamliner this week. It'll take a while for the final product to emerge (producer etc) but I will post when it does.
Initial reports from the first session - Zounds! Sounds great!

Thanks for the review KsPiNeSh.

Yes pretty much stating what is shaping up to be the Liner tone.

I never could get around the hiss of the Mesa M amps (M2000, M6, M9....) and I think Mesa is an awsome company. The Mark III Boogie is the best guitar amp ever built. Too bad they do not make it anymore. The Bass 400 was such a nice amp as well.
