What you do is is your business... However, I do find it strange you have two of these units, one for you, one from another shipment for a "friend" in the UK. the one you open up the enclosure on is your friend's... I assume this because you had alluded that you had already been playing through your SL900 head when you got the first one.

TB Police, of course not! However, many folks are waiting for a phone call for #1 from YOMS, you in fact now have two from two different shipments. I call it like I see it.

If I were the friend in the UK, I'd be a bit surprised that you decided to open his unit, not just the package. That strikes me as very odd in deed.

I was in there today - he has a pile of 17 units he is shipping out. Yours should be with you in a couple of days. Sorry for your wait, but please don't take it out on me.

Questions 1st so if you don't want to read a LM review in black I'll save you the time.

STREAMLINER vs LM III\Tube:

I could get the LM III to be warm with the VPL past noon with the EQ flat. How does the Streamliner compare to the LM when the VPL is up?

Do Streamliner users miss not having a tone shaping knob like the VLP\Enhance ie lack versatility of the LM?

LM III toughts
So I go to GC for the Pres day sale, checking out the LM III for $499 when this lady asks me what I think, its not bad, pretty good price, she goes up to buy it just after listening to me & wants a discount cause it has a few scratches... they end up selling her the LM Tube 800 for $625. Boy was I tempted... but I wanted to come back to TB & talk some things out.

I tested this for at least a hour so I feel pretty comfortable with what it puts out. Used a 15", Sterling HH & P bass FYI. I thought the LM III\Tube was pretty good albeit modern. KJungs clips were right on. The Tube didn't add much. It felt SS all the way. The only warmth came from pushing up the VLE to noon. The VPF was like an enhance (Boost highs & Lows). Pretty good versatility all around. The VLE was a must, combining EQ & VPF to that makes it handy. I almost bought it... I actually went back into the store but walked out again. By the way the LM III said 600w on the back, 500w on the website.

KsPiNeSh, Can you get as much punch and slam behind your notes with with SL900 as you can with your Mesa M9 at modest Gig volume? I dont play all that loud. I just like a nice tight, punchy fundamental when I need it.

I would say yes, but your modest gig volume may vary from mine :) The SL has no shortage of whomp, and with the flexibility in the gain structure, the way the lows tighten up just a bit when the bass is rolled down a bit, and with some mids dialed up at 220... smooth punch central.

Looking for some help here before I take the SL plunge!
I presently have a SMax 12 which I pair with Schroeder 1515L and 1210 reg (both 4 ohms sometimes only one cab) and never seem to get that old school sound I am looking for. I tried the Max also through two MarkBass 121 Cabs and still can't get the vibe I want. In fact, I get closer with the MB 121 combo and ext cab. Any thoughts on how a SL900 would be with one of the Schroeder cabs or through the MB cabs? I know I am reaching here, but wondering if anyone has tried any of these pairings of something similiar, or if I should just go for a new SL900/cab pairing and part with the Schroeders and Max12.

Looks pretty good to meh...

Good to meh?

What I meant, and what the pics show, is that the inside is incredibly tidy and well-constructed as I expect from GB. Hence, the NASA reference.

As an aside, FWIW, I'd nab one of these without the slightest worry about long-term durability. Considering the useful life-span of the amp verus cost, makes the Genz products very competetive to say the least.

I would daresay that the Schroeder and Markbass cabs fall way more on the "modern" end of the spectrum - tight lows, pronounced mids, and present highs. Not sure you'll get a true old school sound with those cabs - they're killer for what they do, but the design philosophies are not so old school. IMO and IME you might get them to open up a bit, but I don't think you'll really ever get "old school" with them.

I hope the Genz guys answer this one.

that is a very tough one to answer. It comes into play ....all the time really. The harder you push the amp though, the more of an affect it will have on your tone and feel.

The 3DPM isn't really just "one thing" or circuit.

Al low volumes, you'll get the "girth" but not the feel so much of output tubes. You will get some subtle compression from the preamp tubes though.

Thanks for the feedback, maybe I need to better define old school. I am not saying I need earth shattering lows, boominess etc, but the sound I am getting particulary with the Max 12 is a little too hi-fi for me. Not enough in the low registers, a little sterile, even with the tube channel or mix, I can't seem to dial it in. Just looking for a tighter, a little deeper bass punch. the Schroeders just don't seem to do it and I dont know if the SL will help at all

Hmm.. what would you say the ratio of whomp to oomph is?

Water, if I'm not mistaken, it sounds like you may have some concerns about the "punchiness" of the amp. I may have similar tone goals in that regard.

I rather like a very direct and punchy tone and held some concern that the SL would be a bit too smooth, along the lines of some notable tube amps. I had the notion that it wouldn't be quick and punchy enough for my sound.

The big caveat here is that I was using a Neox 212 cab which is noted for "punchiness".

All that said, while I think the SL is capable of some fairly smooth and squishy tones, it definitely has the capacity to blast its way through a dense sound mix.

In short, my concerns weren't born-out and found all the punch and slam that I could ever want in it.

I hope you can find one to try out to hear for yourself.
