Genz Benz Streamliner Part 3!!!!

Status
Not open for further replies.
I haven't read every post in the 3 threads, but I did searches. I didn't find any talk of pairing an STM-600 with a Neox-212T (or two 112T's).

Seems like a good match from the specs. Any comments?

Thanks....Lyle

+1

I think of tubes as fuses/patchcords/batteries - and if you gig regularly and don't have spares you are asking for trouble. If the tube tone is worth it for you, have a backup and know how to install it.

Some guys just aren't into worrying about the extra variable, and objectively speaking as a "tubey" guy, it's not my place to judge. To each his own, etc., etc.

Red Planet - if you don't mind, I'll be hitting you up for your thoughts on tube tweaking once my Streamliner arrives; sounds like you've got some nice ideas on how to shape the sound effectively.

Any time feel free to PM me.

If running two cabs, just make sure they are both 8ohm cabs. The minimum load supported is currently 4ohms.

Of course a single cab can be 4ohm or greater - this is up to you...

I have followed every post in all the Streamliner threads. I do not remember anyone saying they will have that combination.

I do think the SL600 would be great with a 4 ohm 2x12 setup. That is where the honey is at (600 watts). As I've said many times, most Gigs I use one 1x12 cab and the 500 watts at 8 ohms of my 9.0 and that gets the job done in spades.

Where I ran into great trouble using the MarkBass heads was trying to run an 8 ohm cab and running out of steam. The limiter would turn the sound to squishy mush.

If you plan on using 2x12's all the time I would think the 600 would cover all the bases excellently.

You do not see a lot of 4 ohm 12" cabs.

All I ever have seen are 8 ohm cabs and most 2x12 cabs are 4 ohms. I believe the GB cabs are like this.

And why you would ever need one of the Genz Benz Amps to run on less than 4 ohms escapes me.

I guess one could run four 8 ohm 4x10 cabs.:D

Well, I took my Streamliner 900 to the Bay Area GTG today (78 degrees and sunny, BTW - very pleasant).

The verdict:
Through my LDS nEarful - sounded awesome.
Through an SVT 810 - sounded freakin' HUGE.
Through a nice 410 - sounded awesome.

Very, very tubey. Not tube-wannabe.

Thanks for bringing the Streamliner. It was simply awesome and really surpassed my expectations.

AWESOME!:hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper:

You gotta let me know what you paid for your LDS (via PM of course).

When I'm able to swing a new rig, I'm still open for cab options. Though I'm leaning GB Quad or Berg AE212.;)

:D

God Bless, Ray

I agree the Streamliner smacks of old smoky tube amp. Not the "has a tube" type of sound.

You know if you look at it, the thing looks like something out of recent military research but if you close your eyes you see an old amp with cigarette burns and a smudge of BBQ sauce on one end.

And of coarse the fact that it can spank any of the other offerings does not hurt. I mean this thing will eat an SVT for breakfest and spit all the other micros out the other end.

To clarify, if you're going to be running a single 8ohm cab, you would prefer the SL900 to hit that wattage honey hole?

If anyone is at all interested, I'll be doing a face-off with my B15N and the Streamliner/Berg AE212 towards the end of February. I doubt I'll be posting clips unless I turn into a tech wizard in the next 2-3 weeks, but I should be able to give a reasonable verbal account.

I'll be sure to have a hex wrench and spare tubes ready. :hiding:

thats not a fair contest. As vibey and classic as a B15N is, the Streamliner power and Berg AE212 should handily win that shootout ...if I were a betting man. :hiding:

Depends on the criteria. He didn't say he was strictly comparing how loud each one was. There's also the tonal comparison. :)

Point taken. But I'm not talking about 'volume'. I expect the punch and range of the AE212 cab to offer up more tonal range and completeness and the Streamliner 900 headroom to offer a degree of punch and percussive viability the B15 cannot match. Just my guess is all.

But to your point, at relatively modest volume levels, listening for honest to goodness realistic classic tube tone, the B15N will bring plenty of vintage Ju-Ju to the shootout. Perhaps I spoke too soon.

Exactly... keep in mind when you're talking bass gear, it's not like the old west where a shootout meant only one left standing. They can be just as cool, only different... so unlike Highlander, there can be more than one. :D :D :D :D

Ok, I'll quit it now. :)
