Genz-Benz Streamliner Part 5

Yes, this is an amazing amp. Agree with all the glowing reports.

I am having a little trouble with the EQ'ing as other posters have mentioned. Nothing different than they have said. Sometimes a little to much bass and the mid EQ limitation. I wish I could mix the SL and the 450. Fatness of the SL and the EQ/compression of the 450.

My main problem is the different basses I have. Piezo fretless to passive w/dark Barts with no tone control [ by choice ]. Keep hoping I will find a killer one-amp-fits-all-my basses amp but not likely.

I use the 8 ohm acoustic image speaker with the UBER 210 to get 4 ohms. The UBER 210 KILLS !! by the way.

EDIT: My SL 600 now belongs to someone else.....

I am just back from my first SL600 rehearsal.
I paired it with an Aguilar db212 (4ohms) and my Lakland DJ5 (modded with Nordstrand PJ5 PUs).

Tonight I've been mainly favoring the J PU.

I briefly compared it to my SA200 as well.
The SL600 has a more flexible mid eq than the SA200.

My first impression is that the SL600 can sound more focussed in the low mids than the SA200.

But both amps are definitely in the same sonic space.

Reading all the SL threads/posts about a dip in the mids, well not with the db212!!!

I am very happy :hyper::hyper::hyper: with the SL600/db212 combo!

Really appreciate the review... saw you had your REDDI up for sale :hiding:

Hows the Pre-EQ tone vs the Post-EQ? Do you notice a difference in the Pre EQ DI quality vs a SS DI by chance?

I'm glad someone else considers the quality of the DI, I got SLAMMED for even asking the question.

Again, he said that the Streamliner Post-EQ was comparable to the REDDI, which is what everyone that has responded to you has been indicating; the Streamliner tone comes form running Post-EQ. No one slammed you for asking - it has been indicated several times and from recordings that there is nothing in the Pre-EQ DI design to differentiate it from being a clean, pure signal from the bass.

One could argue that since the REDDI is deisgned to color your bass with "tubetone", it actually acts as more of a very simple preamp than a strict DI and could be considered to be "Post-EQ" in its own right. The REDDI is designed to be a tube DI and incorporates a specific signal chain designed to effect the tone of your bass. Without going Post-EQ, those design elements, per the block wiring diagram in the Streamliner manual, are not present in the Pre-EQ DI signal path.

No disrespect intended, but I just don't know what other information you're looking for. Pre-EQ, while a cleaner signal than some the Streamliner DI will sound like most any other amp also set to Pre-EQ.

In all fairness not every DI sounds the same, although the differences are fairly subtle.
Also, concerning a mid scoop, I get the feeling it's got some sort of exagerrated STD stigma! Nothing is flat, dips and peaks in the response of pretty much anything out there, besides flat isn't necessarily the ultimate sound... And, boosting the lows, highs, or both effectively does the same thing as scooping the mids. Run a bass with a Sadowsky pre? Mid scoop. Enjoy a J with both pickups equal? Mid scoop.
So let's just call a cat a cat.
I'm interested in peoples impressipns and experiences with gear in real world situations, thanks TB.

Hmm, something is telling me after playing my current amps that I already have the warm tube like tone covered.

I want something that let's the aggression and bite of my Musicman basses cut through completely, hence why I wanted to make sure the brightness is there with the SL. Im thinking of going for the Shuttle 9.0, Max 9.2, or even a MB F500.

Not sure yet...just thinking about it.

I'm looking forward to trying out my SL600 with the Schroeder (212PL) cab due to come in tomorrow. Anyone using the Schroeder cabs with the SL amp?

I have a SL600.
I waiting for a Schroeder BMF215.
Jorg is making cab without a tweeder. (No a fan of tweeders)
Cab will be around 32" high, and weight about 40 lbs.
Old school thump, with focus.
Should have it in two week?
New portable rig under 50 lbs.

I'm not referring to it's voicing or tone stack. There is not a Solid State amp out there that sounds exactly like a full tube amp (power and pre). Nor is there a digital amp out there that sounds like a full tube amp (Streamliner is the closest I have come across and I have played/owned most micros that claim tube-type sound).
Nor do I know of a tube amp that replicates the sound and feel of a solid state amp (the SA200 or Reeves likely are the closest).

But regardless of "voicing" there is a fundamental difference in the way those types of amps behave and it comes through in the sound.
I agree that a typical SS and Tube head will have different feels. I disagree with everything else you are saying. There are examples of SS and Tube heads that work and do not work for me. The issue I am having has nothing to do with the SL having tubes, or feeling like a tube head. The issue I'm have is 100% voicing, and I'm working through it as I'm able to.

I will scope the SL900 and post results if no one else does. It might take me a few days to get to it though. Honestly, I hope someone else does it first to save me the time, but because I am so curious I'll give it a go.

Also, I'm not opposed to picking another cab to pair with this thing if I really decide to stick with it. But as I've said this thing sounds great through the AE212 to me. My issue with it has been mixing the recorded tone down via the headphone and DI. Both are just a bit too bottom heavy for me, and I can't seem to control that. Since an important use for me of this head will be as a post-EQ DI for live and recording purposes, that is a problem for me.

The DB matchup should be killer. And, yes, from my brief trial of the SA200, I hear a LOT of that head in this amp. But the Streamliner obviously gets much louder and stays clean, which is key for me!

That would be great!

Very curious to see how the actual frequency response compares with perceptions. FWIW, IME, there are a number of other variables which make a significant difference in tonality which are not so easily measurable. If you, or anyone else, is able, perhaps running a few tests at various gain levels might be informative, given how the tubes react to varying degrees of overdrive.
