Genz-Benz Streamliner Part 5

Well, I recorded some clips of the Streamliner 900 thru an Avatar TB-153 Bass cab at last nights gig. Bass is a 73' Jazz with Fender Custom Shop 60's overwound pups and D'Addario flats (chromes) that are 6 months old. It is recorded with a Flip video camera and all you are hearing is the head thru the cab as there is no PA support at this venue. I think the video very accurately reproduces how it actually sounded live.

Great playing! You're right up the road in Scottsdale. PM me and let me know where and when you play.

Amp and bass sounds great. Sounds like a Jazz bass to me! Nice cut in the mix too.

Eublet..you are on it man, kinda my point in this video was to showcase the ST 900's ability to produce plenty of 'cut thru the mix' mids...and to dispel KJungs notion that this isn't a great fit with a Jazz bass :hiding:
And I'm sure you had plenty of room on the EQ to dial in more mids if you wanted them, right? Plus that was a 60's bass with flats! Come on folks! Plenty of mids here I think!

Sounds great! Nice fat tone, and killer playing!

It's funny, I don't hear it that way, though I like the tone and the playing a lot. I still hear the "warm surrounding" more than the "cutting through" tone. And that's how I would describe the tone I'm getting myself - warm and surrounding the mix, rather than cutting through it.

Now for myself, the question is if I can (or will) come to love that warm thick supporting tone. I didn't get to do my A/B of Streamliner and Shuttle. If I show up at rehearsal with both the SL and a NeoPak (which, IMO, really does "cut"), I'm certain that my band will prefer the sound of the SL. I will probably do that soon.

The SL sound is, I think, a more "audience-friendly" sound.
The questions (for me) are
1) Do "I" like it; and
2) If it comes through better in service of the music, does it matter if "I" like it?
Or more accurately, does it matter if it doesn't accurately reflect the sound I think I want to hear?

Thanks man! Every Tuesday at Kazimierz in Old Town. you should bring that Nordy in your Avatar shot! :smug:

I'll be happy to bring my Nordy VJ5 sometime! I'd love to sit in with those guys too! Give you a chance to hear your rig from the Audience side of the house. Well done. Thanks for sharing the clips. Side note: I am impressed with the Flip audio quality.

Agreed. Ken is full of crap.

;)

Ok, seriously tho, really tasty playing and you definitely had no cut problems at all, though I would also venture to guess you strongly favor the bridge pickup most of the time, which will get you a lot of that no matter what you're playing through. :)

IMHO!! :)

Kesslari, I've never heard a 60's jazz bass with flats "cut through" in the sense you seem to be using it. In the context of that clip however, I would describe the bass tone as being much more than supporting. You have note definition, pitch, and articulation. You can hear runs, double stops, staccato rhythms, slides, etc. I don't hear that bottom heavy, sub-driven supportive tone that seems to be so popular in today's PA mixes. It does however sound like a 60's jazz with flats, meaning there is no grindy top on it.

Bridge Pup just ever so slightly favored. I dial the head in to sound real close to this with both volume controls dimed. I also raise the bridge pup under the E string and lower it slightly under the G String. I do the exact opposite with my neck pup; it is raised under the G string and lowered under the E. If you listen close, you can hear this :)

Those are great, "relevant" questions indeed! I was getting an absolutely worthy sound last night at my gig. The audience was happy, the band members were happy, and me? ...I wanted something different than what I was getting to some degree. Yet there was nothing wrong with what was happening sonically.

As a player, my opinion and preference is based on both how an amp sounds, and "responds." I've done A-B listening sessions with other players. When I sit across the room and just listen, I hear things differently than when I am actually "playing." ..If that makes sense.

In the interest of accurate disclosure, it is a 73' Fender Jazz with brand new Fender Custom Shop 60's reissue Overwound Pups. :)

I think this IS actually what I was already hearing.

Bottom line is, it sure seemed to me you were getting a particularly cutting tone from the bass. Don't get me wrong tho, it's a good thing. :)

Kesslari and Groberts...This head isn't for everyone. I wasn't feeling it at all for my first 5 or 6 gigs with it and I was beyond used to my Shuttlemax!. Then I started to understand the controls and how they interact...then it began to grow on me....now it is developing into a full on man crush! When one's ear is really used to the sound and feel of particular gear, it takes time to truly gauge a new asset imo.

Man, I so totally understand this. I prefer that "in the pocket" kind of tone when I'm listening, hands down. When I play, for some reason I want to hear more detail, as if I were playing solo. I do tend to get down on myself for this, thinking it a bit selfish perhaps, simply because I know that that kind of tone is seldom needed in a live mix, if ever honestly. On a recording, there is a lot more room to go for this kind of thing depending on the song, but in live mixes it becomes very difficult to pull off. That's why I mentioned earlier I'm trying to get my tone dialed in more for live playing so that I'm not feeling like something is missing when I don't get it how I think I want it. Over time, hopefully I'll learn more to like that tone since so many other players seem completely happy with it.

god help me.... this has to the the most 'Alice through the looking glass' thread I've ever experienced:p

I give up.... again:p

PS Nice clip...

Right on Vic! I was responding to the fact that you said "strongly favoring' the bridge pup...and then I had to get all semantic about ever so 'slightly' favoring the bridge pup...arg! I think for many J Bass players, the interplay and endless possibilities between the pup placements is most of the magic! Sorry for getting all semantic dood! :)
