From my brief experience with the Streamliner, I will say that it very definitely can get a great clean hifi sound if you keep the gain control low - even in high gain mode with a passive bass. There is enough headroom on the channel volume to bring up a clean, low gain setting to gig levels. The tone is very sweet, it has the high end for sure, but it's got a nice soft cushion happening underneath - not murky. It doesn't sound like the Shuttle, it's bigger and rounder on the bottom, and kind of syrupy on top. The mids can be very subtle if you want, but even when pushing them past 3 o'clock, they don't sound harsh or unmusical. I've said this already, but it's like having a studio tube preamp. Yeah, it colors the sound, but in a way that's hard not to love.

The best way to explain it is: This amp has a spit personality.

Oh man, it is descriptions like this that make it hard for me to wait!

every amp will get lost in a mix if you cut the mids.

Of course. But some gear has a naturally "polite" sound (very smooth, maybe slightly scooped to begin with?) and I think that's what he was implying about the shuttle 9. I haven't been able to try one out myself, so I'm asking whether the amp has a naturally smooth/polite sound...

agreed. I'm commenting more on the common occurance of people cutting mids and then saying an amp doesn't sit in the mix or come through properly.

You know, what works for me is a jazz style bass if im doing a gig that requires different sound changes,
If i need to play certain lines i roll off the front pup a little so the bass has more peak and point to the note.. then if i have to slap it.. i turn both pups up 100% which gives that slight mod scoop that all J style basses do when both pups are up..
Works for alot of folks. And i leave my EQ on the amp with everything at about 12:00 + or - .
I have found that the Uber 1288 cabs really work well with minor EQ changes... which to me is good.. And they speak quickly too..

I so the same thing Kirk. Plus, I boost the low mids a bit on the amp. I'm on a crusade to get many bassists to stop using our mid eq on our amps to cut mids and to start using it to boost the low mids.

This way, they "de emphasize" the high mids and they add punch and backbone to their tone. Lastly, many will finally hear and feel the power of the amp.

Oh yes.. With my S9 i will boost a few clicks in the mids.. cab selection on rental dates dictate where i will boost.
It all depends on what cabs i use as to where i boost..especially on a backline or fly date. The S9 goes everywhere with me.. ZERO failures i might add.
This is what i have had good luck with.
I will boost differently with an 810 as compared to a 215 or a 410.. but i like to turn the mid Freq all the way down and boost a click or three.. ever so slight.. With an 810 i may need to boost top since many Backline 810s are muddy sounding to me in a two guitar band...

And with the GB 1288 cabs, everything is at 12:00 and i use the basses Pickups to do what is needed.. so far everyone is happy.. Although i turned down the tweeter control on the 1288 to about 10:00.
I like to do a little bit at a time. .and not just not CUT or boost drastically out of the gate...
I recently had a fellow TBer Wyrm74 come to my local gig. He heard the S9. Max12, 1288s and Alleva KBP4 and LG5.. He liked the LG5. 1288 , MAx 12 combo the best on that gig..... it shook the body fat for sure.

Ed, why do you do such horrible thinks to my wallet?

I was about ready to write this thing off, but now I'm VERY curious to see how this compares to the Shuttle and Aggy TH500.

Ed Friedland does that same as you.....mid freq all the way to the left....couple of clicks boost. I usually keep it at about 9 o'clock with a couple of clicks of boost.

I'm similar. A few clicks up from 150hz and a few clicks of boost. Bass up a few clicks or flat, depending on the box. Works! If I'm using a strange box, I can eq the crap out of it if need be with the 9.0
