Genz Benz Streamliner Pt 7.....

I guess I just do not understand the mindset of purchasing an amp with tubes and not even willing to lift the hood.

It takes all kinds take make the world go round. Sorry if that is offensive.

You seem like a nice guy, but somehow in your overwhelming positivity towards the product (and company), you constantly find ways to subtly belittle people whether that is your intention or not.

What a silly thing to say. My Orange is all tube and it's 2 years old. Touch wood, not had to open it yet.

A lot of people like tube amps, but no one expects a new amp to need opening up.

It's nice to be positive about the amp, but please calm it down.

Almost certainly.

The thing with an all tube preamp is that every once in a while there will be an "infant failure" in spite of everything being burned in at the factory. If we burn them in for an hour, we won't catch the tube that fails in 2 hours... if we burn them in for 2 hours we miss the tube that fails at 4 hours etc. Since we do not manufacture the tubes, we are at the mercey of those who do, there's not very many of them and everybody faces similar challenges.

This is precisely why all products have warranties, and why we take customer service so seriously.
I spoke with Scott at the GB shop about this and he said that it was probably an issue with the V3 tube but the buzz had stopped by the time I called him. It buzzed for 2 days then after receiving a suggestion from Andy (AgedHorse) on turning down the master volume to see if it still buzzed when I powered it up it was dead quiet... and still is 5 days later. At least, I know what it may be if it were to happen again (knock on wood.)

Really? As a guitarist, I think nothing of swapping a preamp tube, or even doing a full swap every year or so. As long as you don't actually touch anything but the tube, it's about as simple as you can get.

Agreed. Heck, one of the reasons I was excited about the Streamliner was being able to play with the the tubes. It's pretty cool to have an amp like this that you can tune to your preferences.

I think, at this point, you're doing more to harm Genz Benz than benefit them. You clearly like their products, but your attitude towards people who either don't know how to or don't care to change tubes out of a brand new amp is surely turning people off to the idea of owning a Streamliner.

GB has been nothing but gracious in taking care of people whose amps are failing earlier than anticipated. I agree that someone shouldn't purchase a tube amp with the expectation that they will never have to replace a tube, but I also agree that people should expect their brand new products to work. How people choose to approach a product that has failed almost immediately is their decision alone. If you care to advocate for tube swaps versus returns, then provide tutorials and positive feedback in place of criticism and derision.

Ah, the voice of reason.
I love GB and have been very happy with what I've chosen from them in the past. My Shuttle 9.0 is my favorite micro to date, of all of them. I got a defective unit is all I posted, it's a fact. I'm comfortable that on Monday I'll get a call from Jeff and there will be a replacement on it's way to me along with a genuine apology and that's more than good enough for me. So be clear that their customer service is second to none in this business IMHO. I've done tube changes and biasing between shows on the road. It doesn't mean that I want to roll the tubes in my 18 hour old amp.

+1 - btw - how long should we expect before we need to replace/maintain the tubes?

Just trying to make a point guys . It has nothing to do with a paticular product.

I can understand having an issue with something you paid for and expecting it to work.

My point is if I thought a problem was remotely tied to a tube issue I would investigate because tubes are prone to failure sometimes. Not all the time but it is the nature of the way they are built, manufactured, and designed.

I think you guys think I'm trying to protect Genz Benz or "the product". I'm not; I'm stating what I believe.

Silly or not, if your not prepared to deal with the maintenance involved with a tube amp then you should stay away from anything with a tube in it.

I bet your Orange is a great amp, though you will have a tube failure.

It's important to know how to change a tube, What to look/listen for. Eventually if you have an all tube amp, how to Bias Power Tubes. If you are not up to it you might be better served with an all SS amp.

It can be deadly opening up and poking around inside an amp if you don't know what you're doing.

Wouldnt opening up a brand new head also invalidate the warranty?
I think its ok for those who know what they are doing but for the rest it could lead to more problems and could end up costing more money.

I would be very upset if a new head failed during a gig, and as this is my first ever tube head i have no idea what to expect inside. Saying that, as im in the UK i would certainly be willing to change the tubes (and willing to learn about doing this anyway as i know they will fail at some point) rather than having to get the head shipped away for who knows how long.
I would expect compensation for doing this though.
I wonder how GB stand on this. Its certainly cheaper for them to pay for the cost of 3 tubes rather than to have a head sent back, although our warranty should be with the place of purchase and not the manufacturer so maybe its not something GB would consider.

I seriously doubt changing a tube in a tube amp invalidates the warranty. I'll defer to the Genz Benz guys for that though.

And it is certainly not dangerous to change a tube.

It is however dangerous for someone to go poking around in things they know nothing about. Which has allways been the case regardless of what the equipment is. A little common sense goes a long way. I guess they arent offering that cvoarse at the local comunnity college these days. :D

I think Fender UK cover us Dave, so no problems. Matt @ Fender was very helpful when I had an exchange.

It wouldnt go back to Genz from us...I doubt very much. If its in warranty and not something they can solve in a few conversations then no doubt they would replace it.

I agree at some point you may have to get new tubes, but not for a long time.

Some manufacturers DO state that it invalidates your warranty if you open it up without a tech they recommend/worked on by themselves.

I had a tube go bad in a Dual Terror by Orange, (guitar).

That amp is VERY cool, and also quite easy to change tubes on. Id had it 14 months and they still sent me a new tube...but I had barely used it so I think thats great.

But, if it was literally a few months old and not used much, or even literally brand new, I wouldnt touch it.

Woah, its great that you give input...but please dont offend people regarding common sense.

IMO, common sense would state a brand new product should NOT be fiddled with....and even if it is, you have to be very very confident you understand it.

QUOTE=alexofc69;10994774]+1 - btw - how long should we expect before we need to replace/maintain the tubes?[/QUOTE]

Preamp tubes can last a looooooooong time... they're not like power tubes (which can also last a looooooong time but are more prone to failure :)). They do go bad on occasion, but more often than not it will be years before they need maintenance IME.

Oh i realise it cant be difficult, and im more than capable of reading up on doing it and changing them myself. what i meant was if something else failed or went wrong, and it comes to light that ive opened it up myself i could be liable for repairs, depending on how GB/Fender view it.

@Gareth.
Its good to know Fender are on the ball but thinking is this.

If i have to send the head back, and it turns out its just a tube, it could still mean i have no head for a couple of weeks while Fender get it fixed (which would probably take less than 10mins)
I would prefer them to send me the tubes and let me do it myself. This would save time, probably save them money and be less inconvenient. I just dont think I should be out of pocket no matter how easy it is to sort out, at least not on a new head.
Of course, this is all hypothectical as my head is working fine and i expect to get many years of great service out of it.
