I dont really get to play with mine as i only see it at gigs, and just recently we haven't been getting a sound check.
I did think the difference in tone was just that it was louder with the gain in, a bit like just turning the amp up a bit, but it seems there is more to it than that.
More playing this weekend i think although i also intend to use my F1 at some point.

The gain switch chnages how hard the preamp is driven and while it may change the texture of the midrange, it doesn't change the eq. The whole amp is pretty interactive.

You know, the Genz Benz and Ampeg micro amps are about the only ones I can stand to look at anymore. Sure, Genz Benz uses blue LED's ;) , but their amps have a look. The project box look was OK when micro amps were new on the market, but I'm getting a little tired of them all looking the same except for whatever logo's on the front. Nice to see Genz Benz mixing it up a little.

There is a YouTube of Ed Friedland doing a demo of the SL 900 where he gets a fairly aggressive overdriven tone out of the amp ( see link below), which he calls "face melt". I have tried to get this tone, but even with the gain button pushed in and the gain dimed , I can't get close to this overdriven tone on the video . I am playing thru Berg 2xAE112. The tone I am getting with full gain is still fairly clean. Anyone able get this "face melt" overdriven tone out of their SL 900? If so , what are your settings and cab?

Oooh yeah. Easy to get that amount of drive outta it, just-gain button in, gain control up-full if you like that much- & vol control down.
Wasn't til I recorded some, till I realised just how much drive was actually going on.
Too much for what I normally need. Better to have it available if needed tho.
Perhaps my basses are a higher output-dunno

I was wondering if it was cause of his active Carvin bass? I sure cant get that with my passive P5; got a little close with one of my active 5ers but nowhere near what he shows. And I had the knobs way more cranked than he does, so I'm guessing its's his bass. Not sure what else. Anybody getting that harsh but cool OD with theirs?

You may just have lower output pickups, or they are set a little low.
I have two passive J's and one can drive to facemelt and the can't.
