I found that the Tung Sol worked well enough in V1 also, though for whatever reason I preferred the Sovtek over and over again when flipping them (it is possible I actually just prefer what the Tung Sol does later in the circuit though). If it does go microphonic (and the 2nd one I bought as well) I may have to get another Tung Sol to replace it with and try it that way. I think the tubes in my old Walkabout were Mesa branded Sovtek LPs though, and I never had issues with those...lets hope I got a good one!

Hey guys... I just received my new ST900. So far I'm really digging the tones I'm getting but have a concern. There seems to be a pretty strong over-tone that happens on the E string, and on the A string when playing an E at the 7th fret. It is a buzzing underneath the note, if that makes any sense. At first I thought it might be my cab (AG GS112) but I have definitely narrowed it down to the head. I'm now thinking that one of the tubes is bad, maybe micro-phonic? If that were the case, would the possible offender be in the V1 position? I have 2 good 12AX7s from my Walkabout head I can pull to do some testing, but any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

I had the exact same thing happen to me this week.. I changed all the tubes out yet it was still there.. After 1/2 an hour i realized it was NOT my amp.
It was my sadowsky pj5 bass. the push/pull tine pot was the issue. I push/ pulled it a few times and it was all fixed. it was the tone pots switch on my bass..

Your thing may be different though..

Hi. Yes. I checked my bass over pretty good as well. The reason I'm lead to think it is the amp is I also have my Walkabout underneath the ST900 and I did a quick A/B test. Playing through the WA, no over-tones. ST... over-tones. I think I'll do a tube swap later today just to make sure, and if that does not fix, maybe a quick call to Genz Benz.

Check to see that there's not some sympathetic vibration going on that's exaggerated by the voicing of the Streamliner versus the Walkabout. Try eq'ing the Walkabout similar to the Streamliner and see if it returns.

Hey all - just picked up a Streamliner 600 that arrived yesterday.

My very limited testing of it late last night, especially against the Shuttle 6.0 that it will be replacing, has me very excited about the tonal possibilities.

Questions - I have some pretty cool old tubes (helps that a neighbour had tons of vintage tubes that he sold me at $5 a pop) that I want to roll in to see what works best.

Of the following, what do you guys recommend as good starting points for V1, V2 and V3 (and I will totally let my ears be the final judge ultimately):

For V1, I have the following 5751's:

-NOS Raytheon with windmill getter (This one cost me $8 on ebay a couple of years back - proof that bargains can still be found if you ask the right questions) - this was the clear winner in my old Mesa Walkabout.
-2x GE 5-stars
-Sanborn re-branded RCA (2nd choice in the Walkabout)
-Tung-Sol

For V2 and V3, I'm considering some combo of the following:

-Philips Jan 12ax7wa (have a couple of these)
-JJ ecc83s
- the original Ruby Select 12ax7's
-I also have a bunch of cool NOS 12au7's (RCA, GE, etc)


This is a fun project, so feel free to throw me some ideas as to what you would expect to help you find YOUR Tone Nirvana.

I did, and it sounded perfect. The headphone out sounds really good. But... correct me if I'm wrong: Isn't the whole issue with microphonic tubes due to the interaction of the tube with the vibrations caused by the output of signal through a speaker? So if I take out the speaker, no external vibrations - no microphonics. Plug speaker back in - reintroduce the vibrations, you get microphonics (for at faulty tube or one prone to such behavior), right?

A bad microphonic tube can sure do some funny things no doubt. It is a normal occurence to get one of these babies on occasion due to the nature of the design.

I was playing around with some tubes a while back and ended up with a really microphonic tube in V3. I was getting some really odd tones for sure.

I have found this to be the case with all of the New Sensor tubes I have used.

The Tungsol has this upper end chime that I really like. The EH has a good deal of midrange and the Sovtek LPS is nice and round. As a foot note the Tungsol and EH are the same exact tube with a different getter (which does make them sound different). The problem I have had with all of them are a few days into playing them they all go badly microphonic. I believe it has to do with out gassing.

IMO for anyone wanting to use the New Sensore preamp tubes put them some other place than V1.

The LPS also have some anomolies at the extremes of the curves in addition to being a l\ittle more prone to microphonics.

I tried a Phillips Jan 5751 in V1, and it sounds GREAT! I guess the word is tighter, the low end has more attack and less flub, the high frets on the A and D strings no longer have a "halo" of undefined low end around them. Much nicer. I think I now like the bass and treble flat, mids 2:00 at 2.5k.

I also have a Tung Sol and a TAD 7025S. Any suggestions on where those might sound good? I'm always looking for a more hi-mid/lo-treble forward sound as long as I can keep the nice lows and fatness.

that's a great what to describe the results that i found with a 5751 in V1.
