:D On that one, I just feel more comfortable with that particular fingering (i.e., the Eb on the D string). However, never really went to school on this tune, so I'm sure it is more just my 'interpretation' of the line that came into my head, since it is kind of a P Bass thing. Apologies to the real Meter's fans.

Big +1. I think a lot of us were just in search of a quick fix, i.e. tube swap to fix the problem, and really trying to support Genz Benz but I totally respect KJ's strike out rule. I absolutely understand the feeling of not wanting to fiddle with brand new equipment to get it to work properly. I'm the same way with equipment, and first impressions mean a lot to me. I'll give it 1 or 2 nice tries and if it doesn't perform as it's supposed to, then I call it a "strikeout" as well. Unfortunately, it looks like a few of the posts got a little out of hand. I think we should all respect the OP's way of thinking about equipment performance standards and take the good things we gained out of this thread (video clips), and move forward in a positive manner. I'm very intrigued with this amp myself.

Sometimes the stock component does suck. Example: The stock tires (brand/model withheld) on my 2001 Honda CR-V (that I bought new) were terrible in pretty much all performance categories; finally, at around 38K miles I replaced them with Michelin® HydroEdge® tires that totally transformed the vehicle into what it should have been from day one.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled thread. :cool:

Even power tubes can take a reasonable amount of abuse if they are cool - i.e. not banging them around right after you shut down.

It would be interesting to know if the serial numbers were close, meaning that, maybe bad tubes got put in consecutive runs of the amp. If they are far apart, then maybe it's a QC problem. Caveat : I have no idea how these amps are assembled, if they are on an assembly line or not, but, it might good to know. I'm not a tube guy by any means, but I did have an Ampeg B15N shipped to me from New York that, by the time it got to me, the shipping box looked like it had been through a cyclone. Plugged it in and it fired right up with original tubes.

Seriously, as has been said, most likely tube related and with the Streamliner having 3 tubes, the weather during shipping, shipping pitfalls etc., I'm not surprised. It doesn't take that much to dislodge a tube. Even a simple reseat (remove and reinstall) might have fixed it. I don't know if the Streamliner has tube retainers like the shuttles do, Andy? It's hard to tell from the close up pics through the window.
I'm guessing most people are more dismayed that Ken wasn't able to do his comparisons with more basses and cabs than his decision to abandon the process altogether.

I almost didn't post on this, and hopefully this isn't a bad idea, but I just wanted to say this...

To whomever it may interest...

Ken very absolutely had no agenda on this amp. He and I have been PM'ing about it since before he got it, while he had it, and as he was making his final decision.

Trust me... the shiny side is up on this one.

I didn't get to see the "action" in this thread, but anyone baggin' on Ken for his thoughts must not do any gigs on the level he does, or any at all.

I 100% agree with Ken.
A new amp, clean out of the box. OK, sure things happen.
#2, yeah, I'm not opening up really anything to try and fix it. It's going back. And I may NOT come back to it.

My Shuttle 9.0 developed an issue. GB responded in the typical awesome fashion.
Second unit was flawless for a while. But I gig the SNOT out of it.
So, I swapped the tube. Still had an issue. Called GB to send it in but on a whim swapped the tube again and all issues seemed to be gone.
If the amp was new and didn't have a ton of gigs on it, then my thoughts/feeling might be different.

I've logged about 200 gigs last year. I swear by the 9.0.
But I also really dig (dug??) the clean tones I've heard thus far from the Streamliner.
Might wait a month or two and hopefully this is isolated to just a few units.

Ken is a stand up guy.

I missed the objectionable posts as well, but to those who consider it reasonable to write abusive comments directed at someone who has put the time and effort that Ken has into helping others make decisions about gear are deeply, well, wrong.

It's a bass amp, fer cryin' out loud -- it's not like he abandoned his research into a cancer cure. It's a pretty saturated field at present (good for us!), and there's no reason to keep putting the miles into something that doesn't measure up to whatever critieria you impose, whether the hyenas agree with you or not, when there is any number of good, tried and tested amplifiers that one can be reasonably confident are not going to crap out at the next gig. And that he already owns!

I'm sure it's an isolated problem that GB will have ironed out at any moment. But really ....?

There is no comparing a 900 watt Monster to a 450 watt amp. However you want to look at it.

Just call me the objectionable one, he who speaks his mind. :eek:

I mean we really can't be doing that can we?
