GenzBenz Streamliner Pt 8...

I spent some time today playing my Streamliner through various basses. I noticed when I dig in hard I get a little grit that usually I do not want.

I decided to pop a 5814A tube back in V1 as a couple of us have tried. It took the level right where I wanted it. Now I'm diming the channel volume and leaving the pre gain at halfway. Nice and clean but with that extra bit of punch you get when the db switch is engaged but just a smidgen cleaner.

Perfect.

IME, yes, assuming you're not competing with 2 fullstacks cranked to 10 and that you turn the bass knob down a bit.

i tried to hit you on banzai about this, but you're ignoring me :(

one guitard is using a 5150 2x12 combo. the other's running a blue voodoo into a 2x12 cab. we're fairly loud as a rule, and i sometimes find myself playing without PA support.

really pondering a neo 4x12 or maybe a "big" schroeder for this head... really want to get back to a single-cab rig. without carting a fridge around. :D

It's really up to you. If you're going for a classic, mid-heavy Punk snarl and playing with a pick, then you'll have the lows rolled back, and the SL/Neo 4*12 combination should be plenty. If your tone involves scooped mids and a smiley-face EQ curve, you'll waste most of your power on fat, pillowy lows, and you'll need more cab.

Too big of a low end... hahahah thats funny..

Well we are playing bass after all....:)
The UBer 115 has a nice mid voice ad is smooth up top with the tweeter. Silky I would say..
Some people think all you can get from a 15 is MUD.. not so at all..
Depends on the player, the amp the bass...And how one articulates.
The UB115 cab has smoother mids than a 210 cab for me.. way more articulation than the Aggy GS112s that i had.. but maintain punch and heft .. and its better focused with smoother transition form mids to the tweeter than those Aggy 12s..
Can i get rumble with the Uber.. Sure if i wanted to..
A friend said it was like a cleaner, Louder, ballsier bigger punchy B-15.. but waaaay cleaner and waaay Louder..

On bigger fly dates i will use the Streamliner on an 810 (shown on 1st page of this thread).. or two 810s with the streamliner running a Fender Poweramp in two 810s.
Im on Hiatus now but I will running my full rig on shows in October.. I will get photos to post then...

Billy Sheehan: I know, I know. And being a bass player is notoriously tough when you are playing live. Unfortunately the bass is called a bass- but so are all low frequencies. The sound guy goes out in front, and you ask him, "Can you hear bass?" "Yeah. I can hear bass." He doesn't hear your bass guitar, but he hears some low-end rumble. I wish guitars were called trebles, because then guitarists would know exactly what we are talking about. " you hear treble?" Yeah I hear treble."

It surprises me that with the with big low end of the STL that 15's aren't too much of a good thing.

Thanks. Now that you mention it, I do remember kesslari's clip. And I remember that it sounded great. I was just wondering if the fullness of both the fEARful and the Streamliner paired together might be a bit much. But that's what the knobs are for.

Well, I just joined the SM900 crowd, and I've been playing it through my LDS 15/6. You WILL have to dial back a lot of the bass.....it's pretty overpowering. I've been experimenting a bit, and I've got mine dialed back to about 9:00 in order to keep the boominess down. Don't get me wrong; it sounds great, but it will need some knob turning to get it tuned in just right.

That makes sense. My little Flite 103W's are tuned low and wide like a 15/6 (although they don't play anywhere near as loud), and I generally have the bass control between 9 and 10 o'clock on my 900, depending on the venue. For a tight, growly/grinding finger-funk tone on the B-string of my Ibanez ATK, I've even run it with the bass all the way off...

Thanks for bringing up the 115 , I have been thinking of getting a 115 and just started researching some , forgot GB had them , it is probably a great match with the streamliner

That's what I was expecting and it shouldn't be a problem. Have you tried it thru your Acme cab(s)? If so, how'd that work? I've got a pair of B2 Series II 2-10's. Looking forward to trying those with the STM-900 too (when I get it).

For those who know these things – is the Genz Neo-X 2x12 enough (being fed 900-ish watts from the streamliner) to carry a 100-ish capacity venue with zero PA support, playing loud fast hardcore punkrock?

Yes. I use this exact setup for classic rock/alternative band. It can be pretty loud and I like it.

I really want to try out a Streamliner 600 this fall. However, I also want to try out a Tone Hammer 500.

I searched for a good A/B-type thread on those two, but I couldn't find one. Can anyone link me to one (if there is one)? It seems like there are at least a couple people here that own or have tried both.

EDIT: Just found one that I didn't see before... :P

By the way, I'm going to be replacing an Ashdown MAG 600 that I LOVE. I want something very rounded and punchy. I like the way Ashdown imitates a warm, tube-like tone, but I up the mids and lower the bass so that it's not boomy like some actual tube amps can be.

Thanks!

First post here, and I hope I'm not starting out on a bad note.. this Streamliner 900 saga is a little overwhelming to navigate, so I apologize if this has already been covered..

From everything I've read (I think I'm about 1/2 way through pt 5) this is the amp I'm really thinking about buying. My concern is my cabs.. Bag End S15-D and an S15x-D. I was told by a local store that this head would blow them up, but I swear I read where someone was running this setup and was happy. I love the BE 15's, and feel like this would be a great setup for me.. thick, warm and meaty with a good balance of flab and punch (makes sense in my head, but doesn't sound that good after writing it).. anyway, if thing is too much amp for my cabs, maybe I should just consider the 600? I play in a band that's best described as Heavy Mellow, and the drummer is extra loud. I can keep up with my current head (1st-gen Traveler, upgraded to a Plus), but just barely. Any thoughts or opinions on the 900 with BE 15's would be very much appreciated.

BTW, I've been lurking here, off and on, for more than a decade. Thanks for all the great info.. and entertainment!

Not yet. My Acme cab is stored away right now in order to appease "she who must be obeyed." ;) I'll pull it out over the weekend and let you know how it sounds.

Well, you probably could blow them up if you're too aggressive with the volume knob. That said, you just have to listen to your cabs and, if you hear them breaking up, turn it down a bit. I owned some BE cabs for a brief period of time and I would think they would sound excellent with this head.
