GenzBenz Streamliner Pt 8...

OMG oh the agony!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to fire up my Streamliner 900 and it was making these really weird noises. Sputtering, popping, and all kinds of crazy sounds. What to do what to do what to do????????????????????:crying::bawl::eek:

Not really a big deal. Just had to change out a tube. Took me 3 minutes. :D

Sorry to hear this. Did it happen on the gig? If so, 3 minutes feels like 60.
Has anyone had their Streamliner crap out at the gig? I ask because I never carry a backup amp. Usually, preamp tubes are no trouble.

Is this where I get a number for joining the Streamliner club? I have never done it with any product.

But I will put up with anything for this kind of TONE!!!

I just got my Streamliner 900 and have never come close to an amp sounding so good (with Avatar TB153 15/6/1 type).

I am getting all that creamy thick, rich goodness that I had given up on. To quote Ed Friedland, "I'm sold".

On question though, It seemed to have been opened once and the power cord (head end) is wobbly, won't seat into the head properly and the amp even lost connection three times and shut down suddenly. That can't be good for tubes.

I'm thinking I'll buy a heavy duty after market one but I shouldn't have too. I mean c'mon a power cord that is loose, wobbly, and won't stay connected to the head???

The SOUND though. It slays me and nothing but my NYBWs slay me.

My first one did this, I think many thought I was crazy! It did the same thing, no idea why. The replacement I have is perfect.

Musicman20 had the only reported power cord/power jack problem.

However, before you jump to conclusions, agedhorse advises that G-B spec'd a high grade cable with a tight, almost interference fit. If you're used to to loose, easy feel of inexpensive cord sets, you may not be pushing hard enough to fully seat the cord.

Try eyeballing the connection, and make sure that the plug is always seated all the way. If it isn't, it may make an unreliable connection.

If there really is a problem with the cord, G-B will make good.

I guess you did not get the sarcasm in my post.

This was a NOS tube I paid 50 bucks for. Oh well. It's just a tube.
People don't realize what a sewer the NOS tube market has become. We're not the only people scrabbling for old tubes- there are also vintage TV, hi-fi, and radio fans.

People are selling 50 year old "NOS" tubes that they've bought third and fourth hand at Ham radio swap meets. They may not be intentionally defrauding their customers, but how do they know the provenance of those tubes? At this point, how many closed-out 1950's television dealer's with hidden tube stashes do you think are left?

I do tube amp mods and repairs, mostly for g****rists, and I encourage them to keep their vintage tubes for recording and fooling around at home. In my own tube collection, my last beloved RCA blackplate finally died on me, and I don't intend to replace it.

Between the Tung Sol and Mullard re-issues and premium 12AX7's like the Ruby Tubes that Genz uses, there's a pretty wide tonal range available in current-production tubes. No need to risk using museum pieces on the gig.

Agreed, try a different cord. The one supplied may be an issue. The new STL900 I got in replacement works fine with the supplied cord, but in your case, best to check anyway. GB will sort it, no matter what.

I already heard back from Jeff Genzler. Now THAT's support. The President/creator on a Saturday!

Anyway, THANKS for the tip. I pushed a little harder than I was comfortable and voila' it's in rock solid. I think I will just leave it connected. I love that solid connection but don't like the repetitive in/out of a tight connection like that.

Thank you though for the pointer!

I wouldn't worry - a good solid connection like that seems to be becoming the norm. My Ibanez Promethean is the same.
:)
It's reassuring.

Figured I'd add a little pic.

That's a very nice 3-way LDS. I'll bet that rocks. A midrange driver with dual 12s really fills in those upper mids. This is mine with the STM900. I just got to use it at band practice for the first time and it's the perfect fingerstyle tone for me. It's thick and supportive but still tight and articulate. Mids are very present but smooth, not harsh and sit great in the mix. I thought a low end monster like this might be too much of a good thing with the Streamliner but setting the bass at 10:00 and 600 Hz mids at 2:00 balances it just right. Even though it didn't sound loud to me, I had to turn down to blend right with the rest of the band.
Great amp; this thing has authority!

^ Great looking rig! I bet it sounds fantastic. Mine is actually an Accugroove El Whappo inspired cab utilizing the "cabinet within cabinet" design. It has Beyma speakers in it and I couldn't be happier with the tone. Thick, meaty, controlled lows and wonderful mids and highs to boot.

had a surprise test today. lets see how hot the streamliner gets aftter 6 hours of being left on.. well its not a test i wanted to do but it was cool ass a cucumber. nice to know.. any damage or things i shhould look for ass a result of being left on that long? bad to leave em on like thatt?

I had mine on for 3 hours once, cold and no issues!

Very impressed with the fan and cooling.

No. These sort of amps should be 'cool' (pun intended), especially if just 'on' & not being pushed, for ever :)
Mine never got past slight warmth even after a 4 hr gig @ loud vol.
