Genzler 4 on the Floor

the more that i work with the 4 on the floor, the more i like it, especially running my chase tone secret preamp in front of it. it just seems to smooth everything out even more and make it sound even more natural.

Does the Genzler do low gain overdrive better than the After Shock, in your opinion? I know you mentioned the Aftershock as your current favorite in another thread some time ago.

The High and low pass filters, do they effect the clean sound as well as the distorted? Also, if you were to run this with no distortion, could it essentially replace a Broughton HPF/LPF?
no, just the distortion.
here's the signal path in their block diagram:

by only using the distortion channel at low gain settings, you can effectively work this as HPF - LPF.

...snip...
One interesting application is to use it as the use as clean(ish) HPF just on the Drive Vol, cleans the bottom end up quite nicely.
Wonder what the slope of that HPF is @agedhorse .

Slope is 12dB/octave, constant Q

If anyone is curious, here is an audio clip of my band practice the other night, where I'm using this pedal to add just a touch of tubish light grind to a very clean sounding solid state amp (TC Electronic BH800).

Disclaimers: Please don't judge too harshly. My bass skills are 'medium'. The clip is not the best quality. The band is still working on the song. :)

My 4 on the floor arrived last night, and my first impressions are very good. Tonally it seems to sit right between my Beta and YYZ which is what I was hoping for.

It's a bit mellower than the YYZ and doesn't place quite as much emphasis on "fret clank". It's a bit less dark and wooly than the Beta, since it doesnt have the baked in low end boost.

I think I'll probably dial in the 4OTF to be a good general purpose overdrive/always on effect. Then I can set up the Beta and YYZ each to do what they do best for when I want those sounds.

I don't quite understand having a clean/drive blend with the ability to control the ultimate output.

I concur with these sentiments, but for me a Master Volume is required for an always on effect.

The overdrive circuits sound the best (I'm fact fantastic) when ran a little bit hotter on the clean and drive volumes.

The only issue is the rise in unity volume. Once I reach a good blended overdrive tone, the overall volume is far too high. Unfortunately, that volume boost without a Master Volume control keeps the pedal from being versatile enough for me.

Just add a Master Volume please lol. I'd even be willing to mail it into Genzler for a custom pedal job, because I love the pedal otherwise.

Played a gig a few nights ago and used the 4 On the Floor to add some harmonic complexity to a few tunes. I paired it with a VT Deluxe. Yeah, you can program a "clean" and a "dirty" patch on the VT, but as anyone who has used a VT Deluxe (and its frustrating interactive controls) can attest, you have a greater chance of hitting the lottery than programming similar patches on the unit that have the same fundamental EQ curve but different levels of overdrive. It was nice to be able to step on a pedal to add some grit without changing the overall EQ curve or gain structure of the signal going to the board. Genzler hit it really out of the park with this offering.

The bass sounds great. Good blend of just the right amount of grit. Well done!

Wouldn't lowering the drive and clean volume accomplish this?

Initially that's what I had hoped. But no the tone just isn't there when doing that. At least not without a significant volume boost. Yes a one knob master volume solution sounds redundant. When there are volume controls for the parallel channels. But the pedal is limited by not having a single knob to control overall output.

I don't see how. the drive doesn't change just how loud it is and the balance I've accomplished the same this just by lowering volume and keeping the balance the same ....

Your use case is obviously different than mine. I'm unable to achieve unity volume in my pedal chain while also getting the tone I'm after. I'm currently using another small pedal after it to obtain the sound I want. My experience is that just using the drive and clean knobs to get unity gain makes the pedal sound anemic. Once you start cranking those up the sound comes to life. I'm able to achieve what I'm looking for by placing a small volume pedal after to control it.

The tone does change to my ears.

Sound is so subjective I find that when I'm above unity gain just turning down the drive and clean volume and turning up the monitor volume works just as good.

The drive volume and clean volume are IDENTICAL to a master volume but offers a more comprehensive way to balance the drive and clean signals.

If you need greater than unity gain to overdrive a pedal downstream, that a different thing and would remain even if there were a single control.

The problem is the volume boost that occurs when dialing in the clean channel at the level I need. It turns the pedal into a boost pedal without a main output control.

I know, sounds redundant. It just isn't working for me unfortunately. Not to say it won't work for others as is.

Try adjusting the clean channel 1st and then bring the drive channel to where you want it.
