Genzler 4 on the Floor

I can't know how much clean is needed until the drive is set first.

It's all good though, because I'm running the pedal into others now that attenuate the volume when I click the 4otf on. It sounds much better to me this way and gives the drive tone I'm seeking.

good to hear love being about to understand how differently we achieve the sound in our heads...

All that’s needed is to then turn down the drive and clean volumes a little to compensate.

splitting the controls allows more ability to fine tune the balance which can change with a heavier hand due to the compression effect of the different overdrive algorithms. With a heavier hand, I would expect some players to turn down the clean or turn up the drive volumes to maintain a similar ratio between the two.

The 4OTF has become my favorite pedal. I have it on nearly 100% of the time. I have it dialed in right in the edge of subtle/not quite subtle grit. It sits nicely in the mix but gets a little dirty if I dig in harder.

The Tech21 YYZ sounds really really good run after the 4OTF if I need a little more grind...the high pass on the 4OTF keeps the zingy treble of the YYZ under control.

I just got one over the weekend.
I’ve been dialing in some great OD tones out of it, in both high and low drive sensitivity. What a great addition the HPF and LPF are. I find the tone is very transparent and adds great OD warmth and slight compression to my D800+ amp without coloring the tone. The feel of it has relived my GAS for a TT 800. I’m pretty stoked!

I’m with you! I ditched my compressor because it was superfluous with the 4OTF.

Still gassing for the TT, though. It’s definitely a want, not a need, but with that and the WD I would have an even wider range of tones. A hot signal from the 4OTF sounds GREAT into those Subway amps. It’s almost like the same guy designed them or something :smug:

I get it. When I got my D800+, I also demo’d the TT and it was the feel of that amp that sold me. The wallet had me leave with the 800+ at the time. But I am really happy with it. I’ve always like to play with pedals and this amp plays well with them and the time straight from the amp is great too, it’s like another pedal. But with the 4OTF, that tone is now enhanced, I love it.

For clean blend I prefer a crossover blend with low/high separation so that the low frequencies are clean and not fighting or stepping on the highs of the distortion side. So basically a volume level for each( or a balance) and an adjustable frequency knob. The x-over frequency range doesn't need to be too broad, say 60 to 2k?

Add a rotary selection of the most famous distortion/overdrive - chips/circuits. An active parametric mid and treble control or LPF on the distortion channel with a pre/post switch.

Also an effects loop for adding other pedals to the high crossover section, so the pedal can be utilized just for it's x-over capabilities. A footswitch to turn the effects loop on/off.

This last part could be useful but isn't necessary.
(Have a separate distortion option to apply for the low clean x-over section and then a traditional blend knob on the clean channel.
This way you can have the mids/highs fully distorted, and a clean signal adjusted to the proper x-over frequency for maintaining the bass fundamentals without interfering with the distorted mids/highs. Then a way to blend in distortion on the clean channel to complete the circle of distortion. Or just keep the clean channel untouched and crossed over.
Finally, an expression pedal input to adjust the crossover frequency on the fly live.)

Those would be my dream features.
Agreed my DSM bass station splits the signal like this at 100 and 500 hz. It just sounds great being able to split the signal.

i thought the 4OTH was a bit too subtle and the OD sounded kinda fizzy (for me) and seemed more in the background. the crashbox4 has more of an edge to the drive and blends in better in my case (with flats).
Is the crash box still pretty transparent or does it color the tone a bit more that the 4otf? Same tuby compressed feel of different?
Thanks!

it's sounds pretty close and is just as transparent. i just prefer the nature of the drive more.
