Genzler Amplification Club

For me, so far, with a Jazz I've got bass at 1:00, mids at 10:00, mid freq at 3:00, treble at 12:00. Contour B at 11:00-1:00. Sounds great on clean or dirty.

EDIT: I would like some ideas of what others are using for settings as well. I've only had my MG800 for a week and that setting above sounded good so I've left it alone. Curious to read how others are setting theirs.

My first experience live with this setup blows my mind. As soon as I plugged my bass into the head and 2 arrays the sound man comes up to the stage and couldn't believe that the tone was that much better hay what I was using. With no PA support for a huge church he said it was the best bass tone he's heard. It feels the whole room and it's much more clear for every note. I honestly couldn't believe it either. This is the best bass tone I've ever had and these speakers and bass head simply killed it.

Thx - will try this. I play a Pbass with flats, so will see how it does. First gig with it this weekend

How is it possible that using My Genzler 800 head with a TC RS212 cab (400 watts 8ohm) and a TC RS210 cab (400watts 8ohm) puts out less volume with the settings 10-15% greater than I used with my new Genzler Array stack. I found myself having to cut the master Volume on the Head using the 2 Genzler cabs as compared to the TC 2 12' and 2 10' stack. That shouldn't be possible. Every not was so crisp and full and you could feel every note. I still can't believe it.

Hello Campbems, I'm not sure about the TC RS cabs specifically but this probably comes down to overall cabinet sensitivity and cabinet nominal impedance. Someone else is better suited for that discussion as it relates to the TC cabs.
As for your Bass Array cabs, they are very efficient cabs. But one thing about efficiency measurements, they are usually performed at 1 meter distance. One specific advantage to the BA design is their projection and dispersion both in the horizontal plane AND forward, deep into the room. It has been the experience of most players that these cabs sound as loud right up front as well as they do over 30 feet away----where more traditional designs might start to fall off.
Hope this is helpful.

There was a video posted on Bass Strings Online facebook page last week ..
He was demoing a pair of Bass Array cabs.. As he walked aways from the cabs,,,maybe 30 to 40 feet. The camera audio sounded the same as he walked away from the cabs as when he was up close.. It was not the best of rooms. but it is equal to many rooms that we come see in everyday situation. Pretty impressed... The BA cabs retained their sound off at an angle and far away.

I jus checked that video out and it shows how great these cabs project the sound. I think a Array 210 is next for me. Should handle all my mall gigs.

New Magellan owner here, just traded it for a Mesa Subway. I've always been a big fan of Jeff's stuff. Could use a bit of help on settings. I found that while the Subway had tons of bottom, it was lacking a bit in the upper mids and highs - tended to get a bit buried in the upper range of the mix.

The Magellan on the other hand is feeling a bit thin to me in the low end. Running it through Baer M112s. Anyone have some suggested settings for thick vintage sound, but still with clear definition?

Which Contour are you using? I've been using Contour A at around 9 o'clock and add in some mids. Also a great setting I read in here is Bass @ 1, Both Mids @ 10 and Treble flat. Try that with the Contour A the Drive channel to get some grit and with your flats you may have what you need.

Jeff Genzler spoke to what the Contour B does to the lows somewhere in this thread about a month ago(?). It's probably within the last 5-10 pages. Anyways, Contour B tightens up the lows so it's not as 'bass" heavy. If that's what you're after check out Contour A.

Ok thx. I haven't messed with the contours much yet, but will try your A setting. I mostly play in a blues/rock trip and the sound I'm after is big and full in the lows with just a bit of grit.

Hello bherman, Thank you for using the Magellan 800.
Reading a couple of your posts and your desire for a vintage type of tone but with big low end and clarity, I'm wondering if you might want to try this setting:

Drive Channel --- Gain at 10 o'clock, Volume at approx. 2 o'clock. Keeping the Gain lower than the Volume is important for your needs.
Contour A ---- set to approx. noon - 2 o'clock.
Bass EQ ----- Noon to 2 o'clock.
You might want to add in a little low mid bump on the Mid EQ filters.

Using the Drive channel to the above setting should provide a little bit of the grit you mention and the Contour A will offer low end and top end boost with a little mid dip.

You can also PM me and we can go a little deeper into your set up and tone goals.

Thx Jeff - I'll give this a shot. Have to wait for the wife to head out so I can turn it up!

Hi Jeff,
Why is it important to set the gain lower than the volume for this particular setting? How does that effect the sound?
Thanks,
Noah

I am curious to know also. I will say that I've been using the settings that Jeff recommended as a starting point and it sounds great - just what I was looking for!

Well I'm not Jeff but I have used GB stuff and have an MG800, which works similarly. I'm sure his explanation will be better, but I will take a stab at the simple version.

Gain and volume on the drive channel are interactive. A low gain setting on drive will actually be close to clean in tone, with just a little grit on it when pushed or played hard. But a low gain setting needs to have a higher volume to send the correct overall output to the power section. You can lower the volume if you want to, but you will then have to turn up master volume to compensate. This can cause an issue balancing with the clean channel, especially if you go back and forth between the two.

Conversely, if you set the gain really high, you will want to lower the volume on the drive channel to avoid overwhelming the power section. By setting the volume and the gain correctly on the drive channel, you can get the balance right between the clean and drive channels and use both while getting the most out of the power section (master volume).

Hope this makes sense and I'm sure Jeff will correct or clarify anywhere it is needed, but that is my understanding of how the drive channel works.

I pulled the trigger last night. My MG-800 should be here by Monday. The reason: I'm on my second warranty swap head in 6 months from another company and it began having issues again, so I'm sending it to get repaired and will sell it once it gets a clean bill of health.

After owning a Shuttlemax 9.2 and Streamliner 900, I'm confidant that I will have no issues with Genzler, they have always been rock solid. I wish I would have gone with Genzler initially.

I'm excited. Wondering how it will sound through the GK Neo212 and Bergantino AE410.

Thanks. I get all that. It just sounded like there was something more to it when Jeff was giving that advice but I guess it was just about keeping the volume level under control.

I agree with EVERYTHING Double Agent mentioned and yes there is a little more.
You mentioned you wanted a little grit and yet wanted to keep the big LF bottom that you like. And it is correct that the higher you run the GAIN on the MG-800 DRIVE channel the more overdriven the tone. BUT as well, the higher you set the GAIN control the more that you roll-off the ultra LF and upper HF of this channel. That is so we keep the overdriven and distortion tones more "musical" and smooth and don't create low end "dub-ness" when the signal is distorted.

So as you mentioned you wanted just a little grit and keeping your LF, this is why I suggested you keep the GAIN in the lower ranges. Certainly all of this is dependent upon your instrument, pick ups and preamp but as a general idea, this is a good place to start.
I hope this added info give you a little more insight as you experiment on your own.
