@Loring --- if you've got the capabilities you could mic each component separately and do a blend --- 1 mic on the woofer and one up close to the array. For general micing I always recommend placing the mic approx 1 foot away from the cab and at an approx 45 degree angle for the center of the cab. This would catch coverage from the woofer and the array in a blended fashion. That usually works for live settings.

It might be a little while as I have contractors working in the basement - had a bit of a flood for Xmas.

would like there to not be a whole lot of background noise...

essentially I’m going to place the mic so that the recorded sound is as close to what I hear with my ear - then using that placement I will generate an IR through the aux in on my genzler Magellan so as not to colour it and get as pure as I can a cab IR.

that way when I’m recording I won’t have to worry about bleed etc and can di from the Magellan post eq use the cab sim and off we go!

and of course I will share

I played out at the Austin rodeo this past summer and the sound guy took the DI out as well as putting the mic on the cab. He was super busy (quick turn arounds etc) but he did mention the mic sound from the cab sounded really good. I don’t know how much he blended the two sounds though.....but this is how he placed the mic.

That's a typical guitar cab placement and is great live but I want to also capture the actual array part as well.

I will try the 2 mics - one on the bass driver, one on the high as well as an LDC about a foot away and see which sounds closest to what I hear in the room.

And thank-you that will maybe help me for the bass driver placement...

Yes, good for the live setting for sure. Also, he took my direct feed so he had plenty to work with. Looking forward to hearing how your 2 mic setup works out.

Easily one of the best. I obviously have not tried all the competition, but it’s a fantastic amp. Great tone, loud, easy to carry. Hopefully I’ll get to use it this year.

My band released this video today to encourage the return of live music in 2021.

My Magellan was used in the recording and the BA15-3/BA210-3 SLTs made an appearance in the video. Enjoy!

@PraiseBassing, thanks for the inquiry, but if you have not yet, you should check out the MG 800 as Loring mentions. While it is not an all tube preamp design, many players with experience with both product lines have dubbed the Genzler Magellan 800, "The Extreme-liner".

Thanks! Indo plan on checking out the MG800, just want to make sure I shouldn’t wait awhile to add another Genzler amp to the comparison. I recently tried the TT-800 and WD-800 at the same time. Being able to have all three in front of me at the same time went a long way in comparing!

You should try the Mesa boogie subway as well. I tried it and it was also a nice amp...

I bought the genzler but you may have different preferences.

I was looking at the bergantino b|amp. The dark glass the subway and the mg 800.

I think the drive is a little more configurable on the dark glass but the Magellan is quite good - definitely more OD than distortion.

For me the ease of getting a great tone quickly put me on the MG800 but it’s always good to compare - that way you know you made the right choice.

The Subway Channel on the TT was great. But not enough to keep the head. I’m looking at Genzler as I have read that the Magellan is kind of an evolution of it. I like that it is two channels since I just sold off my pedal board in a transition to amp only. From all the video’s I’ve seen so far, the range of the second channel is more than enough for my breakup needs. I would definitely be in the lower half of the gain range.

I just don’t want to make try the Magellan now, keep it, just to find out another head is released, since it is NAMM month, and have to go through the whole process again. The closest dealer in hours away from me, so everything is buy online wait for shipping then return if I don’t like it.

I’ve got to tell you how much I’m loving the TV12. Footprint is so small and the sound so full! I see a second in my future. I’m looking forward to trying it in an actual band context. Hell, I’m looking forward to doing anything in a band context!
