The Genzler Drive Channel switch is very compact AND very useful. Even if it is only on a song or two. Maybe the hot riff you always throw in night after night needs a little hair....you got it.

If you are using the MG350 adding a quality drive pedal to your board will make your amp sing. Again, even if it is only on a song or two it’s great to have options!!

I personally like Drive pedals to bring out that mild breakup on the high end while leaving the low end intact. Really gets the bass to sit in the mix or bring it out front when you need it!

I so rarely have a gig that needs an amp...kind of sad in many ways. Most of my work is DI/IEM. In the summer (no covid summers) I usually play a few farmers market, winery, singer/songwriter type gigs, and some jazz quartet stuff. The MG350/12T-V is more than enough. I barely run it at half volume. If I really needed some volume, I'd just get another 12T-V. If I need more than that, there should be FOH support.

Don't get me wrong, I love distortion and OD. But in a town that's 100% country bands, and I've tried so many and never found one I gelled with.

I came close with the Geddy Lee YYZ pedal from Tech 21. I just don't use effects, at all. I get a great solid sound that sets the foundation for the rest of the band. That's kind of how I see myself and my roll as a bass player. I know many people use effects very well, I have just never had a lot of luck using them live.

Steve - that's a really interesting point and resonates with me. Kinda cool to mess with them at home - but in a band setting you want something that cuts through the mix. That's where the combination of the Contour and Bass Array really shine, I think. Not much to be added after that! Maybe some of the pedal-heads (sure, I own several) would be better served paying attention to that live mix.

Exactly. I own a chorus, and that's the only mod I find useful for live playing. I like a bit of mid boost grind for some passages, but I'm also really lazy. Enough gear to mess with, and I tend to gravitate towards nothing more than a tuner, a comp, and an HPF live. I do own other pedals, but I've gotten more discerning after dropping thousands over the years.

Yeah, I have a tuner and for DI gigs, and a REDDI that I really like. I have the HPF available on the boards so I use that for FOH gigs. The Genzler heads have a HPF built in at about 35 hrz or something like that. Good enough for me. I have toyed with the idea of using my MG350 head/DI as my DI, but it isn't very floor friendly. The combo (with the 12T-V cab) isn't really that big. I bring my REDDI in a nice Pelican case, and I did do that for a gig a while back and just turned the volume down (not that it would have interfered with FOH) and it worked well. I may try it again some day. Could sell the REDDI (maybe get $600) but it's paid for and works well for DI/IEM gigs so...saves wear and tear on my combo I guess.

I do want to try that one, but I also know part of my "problem" is that I prefer the sound of overdriven J or MM style pups, but have yet to get my hands on a lightweight short scale that will do that for me.

I like doing the old school tube screamer thing, I use a darkglass b7k with the drive off in front of the MG800 drive channel on a lower gain to lean everything up a bit and bring out its own flavor. A bit more modern sounding than just cranking the volume and gain on the drive channel but that is also a great sound in its own right.

MG800/350 users, give me some settings you like for your middle frequency. I know its room and rig dependent but I'm using mine for direct in recording where those variables are stripped down some. I usually keep mine around the 2k region as my hi mid control on my active preamp is 3k but I'm down to try some lower mid bump type of tones also. Contour B is an always on for me personally.

I use contour B and usually boost 1k when I play my Wattplower to add in some needed bite.

I really liked the Vertex Dynamic Distortion. Maybe I'll give a TS another shot. I like modern for Distortion.
