I think the addition of a 2nd semi-parametric mid would be the biggest upgrade to the Magellan but, a sweet tube preamp section could give it a little more character.

Hey everyone! I'm already in here with a Contour 115 and Focus 115 extension cab. Lucky for me, I just grabbed a Shuttle 6.0 and 210 Combo at Guitar Center for $499 and can't wait til it gets here!
My question is...how will that 210T cab match up with the Focus 115 in the off chance I don't want to run matching 15's? Thanks!

They will work together perfectly.

I’m guessing this is the house rig for the Saxon Pub here in Austin. Chris Maresh is a seasoned player and I’m sure he doesn’t mind the tone from the Genzler stack!

Yes, this Genzler rig has been the house bass amp setup for this club for several years in Austin TX. Lots of great players have been through there. Nice pic.

Not sure the Avalon (while a fantastic DI and one I almost bought back instead of my REDDI) is necessary. The DI in the Magellan is plenty good? I've used the built in DI with great success.

I was gassing to add a 210 to my 15. I had been using a single 12 or two of them together to excellent results but decided to pull the trigger on the 15 earlier this year and thought the 210 would be a better match. After finally getting to gig I have to say the 15 paired with the 12 is both massive and very punchy. Its been well over 4 years with my initial Genzler set up and I am still in tone heaven. The MG800 is an incredible and very reliable head. Owning the BA-12 (original straight) with a BA-12SLT and now the BA-15 cabs to go with my MG800 provides a light weight, portable, and practical solution for all of my playing needs. So I'm holding back on the 210 for now... but hey Talkbass is a gas enabling site.. lol. This pic is from the same outdoor venue that I played at a few weeks ago but different band. Apologies for the Ipad, they had me singing back up on a bunch of stuff that I was too familiar with lyrically and my memory is not what it used to be.

I just went back and looked at the picture and I'm now curious; is that David Grissom playing guitar? It looks like him and he's playing a PRS which makes me wonder.

Doing a little testing this morning.

I like how the 800 drives the 12T-V’s better than the 350. For some reason that may simply come down to watts, there’s just more of everything and the cabs sound better to me.

Likewise, I recently nabbed a Noble but hadn’t tried it yet. So I first ran it into the effects return of the 800 which was nice but didn’t do much for me. But plugging into the input was, I don’t know, magical?! It added further definition, warmth, and air to my tone that was really quite pleasing. Doing an A/B really highlighted the difference keeping the contour and EQ exactly the same. Obviously some of that comes down to the bass and treble controls in the Noble but it also brought out some clarity to my no.1 bass. Signal path was simply bass->Noble->800. My no.1 has an Audere Pro JZ3 preamp that was set flat (I only use it for quick tweaks to account for venue anomalies).

This only means 1 thing; I now need to go haul in my BA cabs and pedalboard from the truck to test it with the full gigging rig to see if one more piece of gear is now be necessary. Lord knows I don’t need it as the 800/BA210/BA15 was already magical to me.

Your post has me thinking about adding one or two MG12T-Vs back into the fold. They have amazing output and low end for such a small, light cabinet. I'm curious how you decide between the Bass Array and MG cabinets for any given show...

That's easy! The BAs stay in my vehicle!

Actually, I've been using them for the summer festival/fair stages. Once winter rolls around and we start playing more cramped quarters, I'll likely go back to the skinny/talls.

Just to add more to the 350/800 effect on these cabs; I first played them for band rehearsal back in feb running both cabs with the 800 head and was in love. Cut to rehearsal a couple months later running the same cabs but using the 350, it was a night/day experience. I had the 350 settings exactly the same as the 800 thinking I'd get a similar tone, just with less output. For some reason, that was not the case. I found myself tweaking the contour and the EQ endlessly and was never able to get back to what I'd heard in the earlier rehearsal. Of course, around that time I switched everything out to the BA cabs and just ran the 350/12T-V for practicing at home. I decided to hook the 800 up and see what happened and lo and behold, what I loved originally was back.It's like the cabs come alive. It's the dangedest thing.

That makes sense to use the BAs on the larger outdoor stages and the MGs on the cramped smaller indoor stages. Most of the stages I play, indoors or outdoors, are fairly cramped.

Your experience with the MG350 vs MG800 is interesting. I also assumed that they would sound the same other than volume level. I've been using the MG350 with a pair of BA10-2s and wishing that I had a little more depth. This has me thinking that I should try the MG800 with the pair of BA10-2s, realizing that I want to be a bit careful with how much power I send to the cabs. I might just try that tomorrow night...

I have been playing Genz Benz and Genzler for a long time. I have hinted at a Magellan "tube amp" as well. I think a Magellan with a tube preamp has to be on the table. Or maybe not. IDK, the old stuff had tube preamps so it isn't doesn't seem to be a huge stretch. Lots of cab options out now, so maybe the focus goes to a tube preamp head of some kind? Who knows.

In the mean time, I've thought about trying to find an old Streamliner from the Genz Benz days for my tube fix. I sent a note to a certain someone who said they may have an idea or two.

If Andy cant dig one up, keep your eyes open, they do turn up in the TB classifieds every once in a while.
