Genzler Amplification Club

The guys I play with and I had our first show. Started as just a bunch of guys jamming.... Now I guess I'm in a band. Ok, so our band played last night ... Anyway, 10-2 combo with a 12-3 SLT. Mic'd on the 12 only, no di. The recording from the audience perspective sounds good to me.

My rig was the backline for the first band. They're bassists was not familiar with Genzler and we talked about the gear after his set, he liked what he heard, especially the clear / smooth top end. Says he heard stuff from his bass he hasn't heard before. Don't know what his usual stuff is though.

Here are a couple of songs, I have a flub in the second song that will be heard, but anyway, if anyone is wondering about a low b through such a setup I hit that note a few times in the second song, you'll know it when you hear it (we're tuned a half step down so I'm fretting what would be an open b in standard)....

Ok, Spent the weekend getting to know my new Shuttle 6.0 and 210 Combo. It sounds fantastic alone or with my 115 Focus. It also sounds great stacked on a MarkBass 102 cab to make a vertical 4x10 "array". However, I did notice one thing, and for me it isn't huge but I noticed it. When connecting effects through the effects loop on the back, the signal fades in and out. Almost like the batteries in my bass's preamp are dying. Is there something I'm missing? If I route through my pedals and then to the instrument input on the front of the head, I have no issues. I did change the batteries in the bass, as well...just to be sure.

Speaking strictly generic SPL wise and measured footprint-wise with no (like/not like) comparison, when I gigged a pair of C8 cabs, I felt they were close to the 212 cabs SPL from more than one brand, including the Genzler cabs. I felt two C4’s were close or slightly more usable SPL to the single 12 (generally not enough for me) and 3 C4s gave a usable (for me) SPL (volume). If I personally were to go for those cabs to meet the type of loud guitar rock SPL I normally play, it would have to be 4 C4s or 2 C8’s. One can compare the measured narrow footprint width of the 12V-T cabs to the narrow footprint specs of the C4/C8 to see what they prefer footprint wise. Also, compare the footprint of the Nu Classic 212 or two NC112 cabs. Sorry, I can’t post like/dislike comparisons. I will say I have been in situations with such small stages that I needed a zero footprint. So far, haven't found physics to allow that spec. Looking forward to the new quantum bass cabs in 2032.

This doesn’t sound like a contact problem.

By any chance are you using a compressor pedal in the effects loop? Since the loop is line level and most pedals are instrument level, it’s possible to saturate the threshold detector on the compressor. This will cause the compressor’s gain cell to pull the signal to maximum attenuation with a slow release time. This matches the symptoms you are experiencing.

Don’t spray anything into the amp, that just creates a mess that then needs to be cleaned up.

Thanks for the reply. No, I was wondering about that. I took the compressor out of the loop. My new setup, currently, is Tuner > Octaver > Dirt > Envelope/synth > Envelope > Chorus > MXR DI. I honestly never really use the effects loop, I was just curious to see how it would sound and was kinda surprised. Verified voltage on two different basses (Modulus Q5 with Barts and an Aguilar preaamp and Elrick Gold Evo 5 with Nordstrand Big Splits and Aguilar Pre). Both check out a 18v and seem to be operating normally. When I feed the shuttle through the pedals with it direct to instrument in, the O/L light will come on when gain is pushed past 12 noon, so that looks dandy. Sound through the instrument in has no issues. And god no, I won't spray anything in there! Everything about that seems wrong! :roflmao:

The problem is that more often than not, contact cleaner isn't the real answer, but it's something that is popular because it's easy and is a feel good attempt at repairing the problem. I see a lot of products damaged from the use of "magic cure-all" sprays, it can be a messy, time consuming and expensive job to properly clean up such messes.

The 4otF pedal has arrived!

The packaging, the graphics on the pedal, the sturdy chassis, the knob layout...everything speaks to the quality and thought process that went into this product. I want to give a special mention to the manual. The description of each control and especially the Theory Section really gives me a good idea of what's going on before I even plug in the pedal.

I've never used overdrive before; I've always used a clean punchy tone. So it will be a while before I decide when to use which "gears". However, I couldn't resist going to 4th gear to see what it could do, and I was able to get a pretty good rendition of the synth bass part in Edgar Winter's Frankenstein!

So, while I patiently wait for Jeff and Andy's next pedal, I'll have plenty of tone shaping exploring to do with the 4otF.

Yeah...on most other basses I've played through the Genzler I set the pre at about noon. I've noticed my TL has a slightly lower output (even with the gain trim knob boosted in the control cavity) than those other basses. Setting it at about 1 o clock seems to be the sweet spot for this bass.
