Genzler Amplification Club

I have a Genz Benz GB210T-XB3, which is 350W power handling at 8 ohms. My Magellan 800 is 400W at 8 ohms. As long as I don’t get crazy with the volume-which I don’t anyway, it shouldn’t be a problem, correct? They do sound great together!

No problem at all working together nicely. I remember that XB3 series very well. Nice acquisition.

Pippin is a classic. I have not played it, though. The scores are based on the revival. Pippin Revival Version When I'm playing a production, the first thing I do is go to the webpage for the show on the licensing company sites, generally either MTI or Concord and read up.

Biobass, what bass will you be using for the show? Your first show with the combo! You'll love it.

My take on the "Break" well-wishes has been, for years, "Break a leg, but don't break a string!" It always makes me laugh thinking what would have to happen for a bassist to break a string during a theatre show!

I’ll be using my Roscoe Beck V, for sure. I can’t remember if it calls for fretless and upright. It has been many years since I’ve played Pippin. If fretless is called for, I’ll probably use my Turner Ren V if I need a 5 string, or my Precision A/E. My upright is ‘39 Kay with a copper Realist.

I used the Magellan Pre/DI into the Shuttle/Berg for an electric/upright doubling show of Jeannie Tesori music earlier in the year. It worked fantastically!

In over 50 years of playing, I have only ever broken a bass string once on a gig. It was an E string, probably back in my RotoSound Swingbass days (I now use TIs exclusively on electric), which unraveled while I was playing. It was quite strange indeed! Fortunately, it was a rock/pop show. I was able to finish the song without the E string, transposing up an octave when necessary, then stop to change. It would have been infinitely more stressful had it happened during a musical production.

Edit: I see from the MTI link you provided that it is a doubling book. Thanks.

2nd edit: I’m remembering a production that I subbed on one night (unbeknownst to me e at the time, it was opening night). I had played productions of Pippen a few times before, so I wasn’t to worried about it. I glanced through the book for about a half hour before the show refreshing my memory on some of the trickier parts. What I totally missed was the instruction on the very first page to “Memorize the first 60 bars, played in total blackout.” The band was on stage.

The score calls for upright, but not fretless. However, my production is doing it as all-electric, I think for reasons of space (which is lucky for me, because I don't play upright). Most of the upright is pizz anyway, so it's just a difference of timbre/sustain. There are a few arco passages, particularly in "Spread a Little Sunshine"; I'm just trying to be as subtle and un-thumpy as I can with the attacks on those (I'm finding that a slightly oblique finger motion--almost a scrape--works pretty well, when the part is slow enough to permit it).

Also, it does call for a 5-string -- not only are there lots of low C's, D's and Eb's (and one low B), but several passages where the 5th string is saving me from some scary position jumps. And (back on topic) I should add that the Magellan 350 was presenting those 5th-string notes beautifully. I assume I wasn't really hearing fundamentals, but I was hearing strong enough low harmonics that my brain was happily conjuring up the fundamentals.

I love the genzler Magellan heads. I have the 800 It’s really such a great all around head. I personally love how genzler seems to be two amps in one. Channel one is the new hi fi sound id an then channel two I feel gives you the authentic old school bass SVT feel. I have a Spector Euro and it has an darkglass pre that came with it. Long story short it’s HOT pre. I usually have too much bass on tab. Which really made some things tough with certain funk songs or blues when I really wanted to cut. But channel two sshheewww I use it when I have to be much louder on stage an at bands levels it cuts sssoo great. A the type of distortion genzler does I feel is musically perfect for bass. I’m actually nervous to get a pedal that not the genzler distortion. I’ll be honest I’m not a fan of heavy stuff like that on bass. But it can help absolutely I’m learning. Either case I played with a augilar pretty much same as the genzler head I guess in size an price. I’ve only used genzler cabs so I guess I can’t speak on how they make other cabs sound, but this is one of the only heads I know that can do that especially at the price range. If I ever get lucky enough to play bigger venues I know this genzler rig is going to be more then enough. I love the contours to and how they change channels like mixing second channel with blue contour for instance. It’s just so many options for price range love me some genz

How similar would you expect the following two Genzler cab setups to sound?

A) MG-212T + BA12-3-SLT
B) MG-112T-V + BA10-2

Hoping "B" would be a scaled down "A" having the same great character.

Check out how the BA410-3 (x 2) Stack just cuts up this 2200 seat theater!!

Very nice, Joe! The bass sounds huge in that space, but it's defined with that high end projection, and it has the right amount of growl, too.I would wish two Genzler 410s on any of us, even if we don't need them.. we still want them!

Rudy definitely has the Steve Perry sound and phrasing. I didn't know that FJ had two lead vocalists until now, when I went to the FJ website. Do they alternate lead vocals, or does Rudy do one band's songs and Constantine the other's? How long has Rudy been a member? Those guys can sing!

Long story short…Rudy was our first choice but was on tour in the UK. So we got Constantine. He is now in an off-Broadway show thru Nov. So, Rudy was available and got him to finish up the year and most likely into next year!

They were the predecessor to the uber series correct?

The XB series was the ceramic driver bass cabinet series for us, the UBER series was different. They did exist together in our GB product line.
XB3 was the final interation of that design.
In the history of GB cabs, yes the XB series existed first and then we developed the UBER (Neo driver) series of cabs as an alternative.

@ImTheOnlyOne ---- Regarding your question, hard to judge the similarities of such a smaller rig, against a 3 x 12" stack. But, I can offer you that, as for the MG-212T vs MG-12T-V. tonally these would be similar, as they are in the same family and using the same drivers. Obviously you have a 2x12 vs 1x12 so there is more "authority" in the larger cab, but these could be seen as similar in tone. Stacking a BA10-2 on top of the smaller MG-12T-V would offer more of a low, low/mid punch. I would also expect a little more top-end clarity out of the BA10-2 cab. I hope this is somewhat helpful.

Anyone using a Mesa D-350 head into a B10 2-S cab? I was on the verge of getting a GK neo iv 112 or 210 cab but stumbled across these array cabs. This would be used mostly for bedroom practice room for now but later on could add another a B10 2-S if needed. Wondering if this Mesa / B10 2 set up is suitable for outdoor gigs later on and wondering if its an upgrade to the GK neo iv cabs mentioned and an equal to the Mesa Subway cabs. Thanks

Yes, this is helpful. Thanks.

I enjoy how the 212T, bullet tweeter on, and BA12 offset each other's limits. Presuming swapping the 212T for a 112T might upset that balance, so figured why not scale also down to the smaller 10-2 array cabinet. Bonus for having amp mounting bracket. I'll search out a local Central NJ/Eastern PA Genzler dealer with hopes of giving a listen.

Skunk, I have a D-350 and used it to practice at home with my BA10-2-S2 while my Genzler combo was at the venue last week. Not only does it work well with the BA10-2-S2, it sounds predictably great. If you already have a D-350, there is no need to get the Genzler MG-350, unless you just prefer the controls of the Genzler head, or want the advantages of the mounting system. They are otherwise very similar.

I have an opportunity to get either a pair of Genx Benz neox-112Ts or a pair of Genzler BA-210s. I have never heard a Genz Benz product and I’ve only played a Genzler product in passing.

I will be powering these with a Mesa Prodigy tube head. I’ve found that I’m not the biggest fan of the Mesa Powerhouse I have so I’m replacing it. Also if anyone can compare either of these cabs with the powerhouse 212 that would be helpful. I like an aggressive tone but only push my tubes to just before breakup. I want as much quick punch as I can get since the tubes lend them selves to a softer attack.

what are the strengths and weaknesses of these cabs and how do they compare? Thanx for your help!

Big fan of the BA210-3 cabs. 2 will punch for days with that quick attack of the 10s while keeping a nice focused low end. With my experience with the Genzler cabs, I believe you’ll be very happy with the Bass Arrays!

Agreeing with Joeykun to go Genzler given your parameters. That said, Genz Benz are most excellent too.
Maybe one day swap one of the BA 210s for a BA 115, like Nathan Navarro had been using.

I had a couple of Powerhouse cabs and would say the BA 210s will be quicker, less woof, more bark, than your 212. No player control network on the BA, so you'll control the smooth top end of the arrays from your amp, not with a tweeter pad on the cab.

Thanx for the responses folks… keep ‘em coming

I do have a concern about the BA210 cabs. The price is a bit lower than I would expect. The seller says they are pretty much like new condition and not payed much. He does live in the middle of nowhere and is an hour from me. Were there ever any copy cats of these cabs? Anyone making fake Genzler cabs?
