Hi Jeff,
Interesting info on the inside/outside voice coil windings. Was this design change for Series 2 due to real world documented cases of voice coil damage to the Series 1 speakers? Or was it simply to reduce the potential for damage across the product line? I haven't heard any rubbing or rattling from my Series 1 BA210-3 cabs, but want to insure best survivability. Secondly, do you upgrade Series 1 cabs to the new inside/outside voice coil windings and is it a simple swap out or, are other upgrades necessary?
@Luckydog ----- thank you and others for your interest and questions about the new drivers being used in the new SERIES 2 cabs.
To clarify the little BA10-2 (series 1) always used an Eminence NEO 10" driver, with a standard wound voice coil ---- wire wound on the ourside of the voice coil former.
BUT our previous larger BASS ARRAY cabinets used Faitals which did have the inside/outside wound voice coils on most of their drivers.
SO, with the change to our new LaVoce 10" on the new small BA10-2-S2 cabinets we were able to add a driver that was more efficient AND offered the benefits of an inside/outside wound voice coil. We feel the benefits are evident in the power handling, output and how it handles the low B notes of 5 string basses. The smaller 2" drivers are standard wound VC, since the benefit of inside/outside VC on smaller drivers is not cost effective or required.
In general the benefits of an inside/outside wound VC is better thermal management, thus higher power handling. They also are more balance and will not deform as easily under extremely stressed conditions. If you can visualize, standard "outside wound" voice coils have 2 layers wound on top of each other, on the outside of the former. Thus the inner winding does not get as much cooling since another wire winding is on top of it.
With the inside/outside, both windings get the same cooling efficiency since they are both exposed to airflow, PLUS you now have widings from the voice coil right next to the pole piece in the center of the magnet/motor. This offers another level of efficiency in the all imporant voice coil gap.
For the larger BA cabs, yes there were several reasons for considering an upgrade to the speakers used as we contemplated the next genration, SERIES 2. Finding drivers that do have this inside/outside VC winding was an importnat "driver" in selecting the right drivers --- if that makes sense. And as we reviewed options the efficiency of the 3" driver we found in the LaVoce line was very intriquing in making our selection. Hopefully more and more players will be able to test the new SERIES 2 and experience the depth, clarity and overall extended frequency response of the cabs. We do feel this has upgraded the performance of the unique BA cab designs.
