Weekend review with the KINETIX 800.
I am a gear head. I have a difficult time articulating the technical details but my ears are well trained and I don't like to tweak knobs..I play primarily 4 string..no effects and I play both finger style and with a pick.
I played 2 shows over this past weekend at two large venues. I used the KINETIX 800 with my Bag End 15’s and a Sadowsky P/J. I received the head on Thursday and used it Friday and Saturday..both shows 2+ hours long.
This was my first GENZLER product .. I was impressed with the build quality right out of the box..it’s solid and nicely balanced and well packaged.
I plugged in at Friday’s venue and instantly knew that this was a good purchase. EQ was as pictured throughout the weekend and I did have to back off the master volume on Saturday’s show.
For those not familiar with the Bag End cabs the S15’s that I use they tend to be a bit mid focused since the enclosures are the smallest of all the 15” cabs out there. They are tight and focused and rarely get boomy. Because of this I sometimes need to pull back on the mids and bump the bass controls…I did not have to do this with this head.
I think that many of us here think that the EQ settings all at 12 o’clock is the baked in sound of an amp and we can tweak that as needed. I did not need to tweak this head.. I did push the gain control into mild break up and it worked beautifully..especially after the tubes warmed up.. the revelation for me was that my P Bass suddenly sounded so much better than it has in the past..
During soundcheck I was able to play around with the Mute/ON/Boost control and the Lean/Fat/Thick settings at high volume levels and they do as advertised. I had the amp set to Fat and it was perfect for what I needed.. I was also messing with a few different EQ settings during soundcheck with great results.
FOH guys were impressed with the head as well..there are a few bass players that work at one of the venues and we always talk shop. We gathered around this new head like a water cooler moment and went through it knob by knob.
Simple controls and useful features make this is a great new head especially if you like tube grind.. plenty of tone and volume from this head.
I am not in the market for new cabinets but was looking at the GENZLER cabinets online..the NuClassics look interesting..I don’t like tweeters so the Array line is not for me but they look awesome.
