Genzler Amplification Club

High level can someone speak to the differences between Nu Classic cabs and the various Genzler array cabs?

I was considering going with Markbass for my first head/cab combo, but it seems like I can find good deals on used Genzler gear in my area. I see the Nu Classic cabs are much cheaper than the array cabs. Still doing my research, but the clips I've heard of Genzler gear have been amazing.

Also, dumb question, would you be more hesitant to buy a used cabinet or a used head? My gut is saying cabinets probably show the impact of abuse easier.
I'll give it a shot first by saying to you that I would not be fearful of buying any used Genzler or Genz Benz gear. It is that well made and backed by two men (Jeff Genzler and Andy Field) who post here almost daily. Andy still handle repairs and much of the older Genz Benz gear keeping it in operation for those owners.

I believe by reading about them on the Genzler site you can get answers to your questions about the differences but safe to say that NuClassic cabs have a more traditional ported cabinet design using ceramic magnet drivers coupled with a compression tweeter. But they are also very lightweight. I'd say the name says it all. They're a more modern and efficient approach to a classic bass cab design.

The Bass Array cabs are a much different concept in cab design. The Neo drivers handle only the lows and low mids allowing the vertically mounted speaker array to handle the mids and the high end each doing what they are best at in the frequency spectrum. What they produce is a very transparent uncolored tonal picture of what each bass sounds like. They're a great match for any of the Genzler bass amps.

Another feature is their off axis sound dispersion. You don't lose anything if you're standing somewhere other than directly in front of the cabs. The effect is much the same as you get with PA systems which also use a speaker array design. Which cabs will work best for you I can't honestly say but I love the design and advantages of the Bass Array cabs. They are also very lightweight. Play each of them if you can.

I second would second these comments in regards to reliability and confidence in buying used. The Genz-Benz and genzler products are built like tanks and Andy or Jeff will set you straight if you have any issues. I have a Genz-Benz shuttle 6.0 that had some scratchy pots and Andy fixed that and much more in the most seamless way possible. Shout out to him.
As far as the cabs, I only have a Magellan 212 cab running through a Magellan 800. I can highly recommend those but haven’t had the pleasure of playing the bass arrays.

I’ve had the displeasure of using MB cabs for backline and can confirm they do not sound as clean, uncolored and punchy as the Genzler NuClassics or BA cabs. Do it right and go Genzler!!

I have not purchased the MB cab yet. Still debating what I want to do. My 20% off deal works with Genzler products, but getting a BA cab will nuke my budget.

I'll listen to some NuClassics audio clips to see how they sound.

My $ down on NuClassics slapping the crap out of the MB cabs in every way possible.

Can you go into this a bit? Most NuClassic clips I’m seeing online are coming from Genzler - would like to find more 3rd party review and discussion
I’m coming from first hand experience having a MB back line at my disposal. I used it once. Always brought my Genz rig from that point on. MB is ok, but Genzler and the older Genz stuff just sound better. They also seem higher quality, more refined, and better engineered.

I was originally considering a MB 58R 2x10 Energy. This NuClassic 210T looks to be about as close as I can get in the Nu Classic line right?

I'm sure you've seen the below nate navarro demo's? Whether they're coming from Genzler or not it's a pretty good audio sample to give you an idea but of course nothing beats trying them both beforehand if you can.
For what it's worth, the guitarist for my band also plays bass (better than me honestly in some regards) and has a markbass little mark head and MB 410 cab and side by side with my magellan 212 and magellan 800, even he agrees the genzler rig is superior.
I honestly don't think you will be disappointed with either as they are both high end unit's, but given the opportunity I would pick Genzler everyday and so would he.

@aarono2690.....you are going to get pretty much all diehards in this thread but there is a reason. In my decades of playing and touring I have had my hands on many an amp and cabinet. In my humble opinion nothing that I have played beats my current setup. The MG 800 does all I need it to tonally, has one of the best DI's I've used and just gets the job done. Since my bands are old school, we use floor monitors etc. We only run vocals through the wedges, and even though we always have plenty of FOH, the amps carry our sound stage. One thing that always amazes me about my cabinet is I can go pretty much anywhere on stage and hear it....not something I could do with any of my previous cabinets. The customer service is amazing (JG is in this thread all the time) and I just don't see myself using anything else going forward. I applaud you for trying to be fiscally thoughtful (I'd love to get my hands on a Kinetix....just don't have the budget it for it now), but at the same time if there is a way to swing an all Genzler rig, my .00002 is that would be the way to go. Keep us posted....

Thanks for this. I'm in this weird grey area where the NuClassic is in my budget, albeit a bit on the higher end. The arrays are super nice and would love to get one, but that pushes me up even higher, but in one hand I feel like I'm already getting somewhat in the ballpark by the fact I'm now looking at NuClassic.

I'm sure there's some fallacy I'm falling into with this train of thought. Right now for the Nu Classic route I'm looking at the NU CLASSIC 210T Bass Cabinet as it's 2x10 (which is what I was looking for originally) and can handle my Magellan 800 that's coming.

I believe you're already getting all of that here from actual owners of these cabs. I can tell you precisely what a Bass Array 10-2-S2 cab is like because it's what I own. Two of them in fact. Those who have commented on the NuClassic cabs also have their own personal experiences to share.

As for those on the Genzler site, you're not likely to find any better demos than those Nate Navarro does but you'll also find many reviews of Genzler amps and cabs online and in Bass Gear Magazine. We could all play MarkBass gear if we believed it was a better sounding rig but we chose Genzler.

The NuClassic are great cabs and quite possibly a design more in line with what you've been accustomed to playing in the past. One factor that would surely increase the cost of a Bass Array is that each cab has a minimum of 5 speakers and as many as 10 vs a more traditional design like a NuClassic which have just one or two.

While I can agree with anyone who says that we're biased it's only because we believe we've found rigs that offer us the best sound and value. Do they cost a bit more? Yes, but if we're still playing these rigs 10-15 years from now like many are now and will doesn't that become less important spread out over that period of time?

Going to pull the trigger tonight on a Nu Classic. I think where I'm at musically will not allow me to justify going for the Bass Array. I believe in buy once, cry once within reason, but I think need to cool my jets on the level of rig I'm getting.

That said, my intent was originally to go 210T, but I'm starting to second guess if 212 is more appropriate for the following:
  • Rock, jazz, funk, and pop
  • Smaller Venues
  • Jamming with friends (drums and guitar)
  • Do not plan to add a second cab for at least a year or two. If I do add one it will probably be a 1x15.
  • I'd like a decent mix of warmth and articulation if possible.
If I'm splitting hairs between 210 vs 212 I'll probably just go with the 210 to save money (it's around $100 cheaper and the lighter weight qualifies for free shipping) and shave a few pounds off.

Any last minute thoughts before I make my move?

Something to consider is the 212 is 4 ohms whereas the 210 is 8 ohms. This means the 212 can be more of a single cab solution that can work across multiple sized venues and rehearsals.

I love mine and have been using it for indoor venues, smaller stages, and quick setups for years now.
