Well I have had quite the interesting evening. One of the things I've been meaning to do while I have a few cabs on hand is to take frequency response measurements, just to help me better understand what I'm hearing. I hadn't planned on sharing any of these measurements because they're very ad-hoc and people who do this correctly for a living will get mad if I don't disclaimer the heck out of this. So here is the disclaimer: this is an ad-hoc in-room measurement using a calibrated Dayton UMM-6 eyeballed to a reasonable 1 meter on-axis position and angle and smoothed to 1/12 octave. Nothing I present should be considered definitive, particularly anything under 300 Hz. Lots of variability in the response graph is to be expected in any setting, and this is absolutely not an acoustic lab or even a treated room.
All that said, I am sharing my measurement of this first version, leather strap BA12-3 anyway because
it is basically perfect.
If you're not accustomed to reading these measurements: the small up and down are unimportant. The large dips at about 190 Hz and 260 Hz are very obviously room resonance issues and should be ignored. Do not trust the bass falloff to be remotely accurate. What we are looking for is large and wide peaks or dips, big swings, overall trends. And in respect ... there are none. It's just flat across the speaker's bandwidth. At a glance the 5k-10k region looks a bit recessed, but a broad downwards slope is typical for an in-room measurement and the graph pretty much shows that from 600-10k. I cannot tell you how much hifi equipment isn't able to do this. For a pro audio, no an
instrument speaker to come in like this? It's art.
The S1 BA210 graph is somewhat messy in comparison, and I won't be sharing it in case I made a mistake and it's not accurate.
The S1 BA410 graph is essentially the same as the BA12-3 except that the response is broadly down 3, maybe 4 dB from 3 kHz on up. I think this is plausible, it's probably about where the woofers stop contributing and the line array isn't quite as loud. I actually think it's somewhat flattering for a bass guitar where the 12-3 can seem bright/forward, but a simple shelving EQ of +3 dB from 3k would flatten it out completely. You can do the reverse to the 12, as well, to get a "mini 410" sound signature.
Straight up just play recorded music through any of these cabs, and it sounds fantastic. I'm sure the S2 only improves further from here.
