Genzler - new amp for Jan 2016

400 watts @ 8 ohms, but the genzler 112 cabs are 350 watts @ 8ohms... so dumb question, would this head overload the cabinet?
It's really good to make sure that you have headroom, so having more watts in an amp than what your cabs are rated at is a good thing. Just be careful not to over power your cabs via the volume so not to pop your cones.

When designing amplifiers there are always trade-offs that need to be addressed within a specific set of technical parameters. The manufacturer's lowest recommended impedance is 2.67 Ohms. While the module may be capable of 2 ohms it does come with more risk.
After much discussion between engineering teams and balancing the "variables" within the modules design, manufacturing tolerances and cabinet impedances in the market place, we chose the recommended 2.67 ohm impedance rating. This also fits very well with our cabinet offerings.
And our position is in no way a comment on how others choose to design this module into their products.

Congratulations Jeff on you brand new product line of amp and cabs! An amazing design on the amp and especially the Bass Array 12-3 cabs! I'm really looking forward to running them thru their paces soon! Cheers!

Color me interested too... First off, I love my Streamliner 900. With a passive J-bass, it is just heaven for me. If this amp can get the hair the Streamliner has AND get super clean I may have to start saving up. Today. As in right now.

I read SVTB15's posts in the other thread and I really want to hear this amp. @Jeff Genzler will Bass San Diego be on your dealer list?
 
Looks like the tone is based on actual engineering and design and not some check box that a gimmick "tube" is included.
Sound goes into the pre-amp, signature sound comes out.
Brains don't really care if there's some internal component thrown in for marketing

Your little editorial isn't really helpful. All amps require serious engineering and design. They don't pop out of thin air.

Of course an amp can sound good without a tube. And of course a tube can affect the tone. Dozens of amp manufacturers, including Genz Benz, wouldn't use them if they had no effect.

Knowing whether a particular amp has a tube included in its design is helpful in understanding the design goals and what it might sound like.

Sorry if I'd missed this question before. The Magellan 800 is an all solid-state design and does not have a preamp tube.

Yes all of this is correct. In our research and past experiences we found just as many (if not more) requests about running an 8 and 4 ohm load together than two 4 ohm loads.

This would work for me with certain cabs from another company ...

Cool, as I regularly use my 8ohm,112+4ohm212 cabs with my GB12.2 or Ampeg V4-B,RI amps at most of my gigs these days. Kinda wish my GK MB800 was 2ohm or 2.67ohm capable.
I was doing the 3x12's way back with my NeoX 112T+212T and my GBE-600, then GBE-750, then Neo-Pak.. Still have that little amp in it's GB bag somewhere around my house.

Getting interested in the Magellan more n more. peace, e.

I'm a bit disappointed. In my mind a modern amp should be capable of operating into a 2Ω load. It's one of the reasons I've stuck with pre/power rigs since the Eighties. Driving two 4Ω loads is natural for me. An 8Ω plus 4Ω (2.67Ω) is less so. Still I do wish Jeff well with this product, I'm certain it's going to be a delight!! :D

Hopefully, w/o getting too geeky, after reading some of @DukeLeJeune discussing impedance of various drivers, you might check with Andy at Acme and ask about the range of the loading for the cabs you have.
If they are a real 4 ohm or higher and you don't need to drive them hard (their lack of efficiency is working against you here), you'd probably be safe with the Magellan 800 driving the pair.
EQing & average power levels come into play, so it may be too much zen archery here for you to feel safe.
I'm not recommending anything one way or another.
From what I got from what Duke was saying is that a lot of modern drivers are actually lower in their impedance curve than what you'd think from their rating.
So instead of a 2 ohm load that a bassist thinks he is running, it is actually below 2 ohm.
Recommending the 2.67 ohm minimum is a way of offsetting for those situations and allows safety to have its proper place WRT over-zealous marketing.
One weird thing about TC Electronic's marketing with the RH series: fast & loose with the power ratings, but if you want to drive a 2.67 ohm load, they had the caveat that they had to be TCE's cabs - I'm thinking the above is why they did that.

They're not all 1/4", but 1/4" should be (according to agedhorse in the Subway thread) "a more robust connector" than 1/8". Makes sense to me. I'd rather deal with an adaptor than have the jack go bad after awhile (not that it necessarily would). And lots of middle-to-higher end cans and almost all audio interfaces for computers are 1/4".
