The local F. W. Woolworth's closed a long time ago. People called it the five and dime store, then it was a ten and fifteen cent store. I fondly remember the lunch counter as a place to get a cheap but good meal.

Funny how things stick in your head. I remember when I used to sell newspapers, buying a change maker there. You wore it on your belt. Speed was important and this helped.

Or, in my own case...my father's people were Hutchisons from Edinburgh, and my mother's were O'Neils from Carlow. Certain periods of history leave me very conflicted. And I'm old enough that even in certain parts of the US it mattered. My mother's home town, Emmettsburg Iowa, has a statue of Robert Emmett in the town square...complete with a noose.

And reminded of my personal strategy for airline privacy. That's reading a book so obscure/intimidating that none dare ask me anything. This works well until the universe seats me next to a lady from Iceland as I read a book on Icelandic runes.

He was a young man when he died, all of 25.

Speaking of it carrying over into the new country.....I once worked in a factory, manual labor and forklift driver. There were two bosses, one a Polish catholic, the other was an Irish protestant (he was long past retirement but he stayed on part time). One day the old Irishman, called me over and asked if I was a protestant or the other. I politely managed to change the subject and steered clear those conversations.

When the late owner/founder of the photography business I was a partner at got married (a long time ago) they had both kosher and non-kosher food at the reception. The former was gobbled up in no time flat, leaving the latter to wonder what was wrong with it that nobody wanted to eat it.
