Conversations don't require words. The family pet dog is very clear with me about everything.
Our dog (a spectacularly stupid 4 year old Sheltie, whose only talent is growing hair) loves to bark incessantly over nothing at all.

He can barely manage a mournful look when he is misunderstood.

We love him dearly, but even a couple of professional trainers have admitted that meaningful communication is virtually impossible...

One look and you know exactly what they want. Face and body language that many of us have trouble grasping.

"Play with me" seems fairly straightforward. Yet I know humans who can either not understand that, or ignore it for human reasons.

On further reflection, I was being unkind to Jerry (our mentally-challenged Sheltie).

He will stiffen up and stare intently into your eyes when he wants whatever you're eating. He continues to stare for an extra 5 minutes or so after the food is all gone, which makes the experience a little spooky.

He also likes to have his hips scratched, just above the root of his tail. When he wants a little action, he will pant furiously, back up to you, and start bumping his butt against your leg.

If he wants something in the kitchen, he will find you, bark, and then walk in that direction. Unfortunately, he hasn't mastered the art of looking at you and then back at the thing he wants. Instead, he just stops in the middle of the room and waits for you to figure it out. He doesn't visibly relax (or tense up!) if you move toward the thing he wants.

Given that everything he desires (access to the back yard, the cat's favourite perch on the windowsill, the fridge, the pantry, his water dish and the kitchen trash) can be found within a few feet of each other, the resulting pantomime can take quite a while.

To quote Bugs Bunny, what a maroon...
